I'm loving the Quartermaster app for iPad and iPhone, and with a fully updated version of the Empire army according to the new edition, it's quite (quite!) handy in cooking up armies.

I created a template featuring every model I've got (about 5,706 points to be exact), and a variation with my "boosted" version with all the upgrades (weighing in at 6,578 points).  I can then pull up either of these as a starting point, duplicate it, and just start deleting stuff from it that I don't want or can do without ... until my target army size is within view.  OR I can of course just build it from scratch, with a mind toward what I know I want to work with (and what I own).

But that just gives you an army list and stats.  Nice to have, but not as helpful as something else I cooked up for when I'm playing.

I picked up an app called Index Card (also on iPad and iPhone — and you can share your projects back and forth through DropBox) and created a separate card for each character and unit in my army.  I set them up in columns (elite stuff like lords and heroes, my core troops, special, ellite, and other), and you can then simply scroll up and down the columns to see the cards you've got at hand.

What I like about this is that you can duplicate the project and delete anything you're not bringing to that battle (as with Quartermaster), but instead of just cooking up a list with stats, you end up with a card on each unit — all of its principal info on the front, and with the tap of a button you're on the "back" of the card, where you can really lay out all of the details of your special rules and magic items and so forth.

It makes for a great tool. 

I'm betting I eventually outgrow the need of it, as I get to know my army better and better.  But I wonder what other systems or tools any of you have come up with for making you more effective at conducting your battles.

I used to have exactly the same 'unit on a card' for years and years, especially when I was running NPC armies in campaigns. We're talking the 90s. The technology back then was called ...wait, I'll remember ... yes! It was called 'cards'.

I use armybuilder to write my armies but I do like the sound of those index cards to keep with units.
