Spears never required two hands.
It is not enough to have no ideas of your own; you must also be incapable of expressing them.

Doesn't that mean they get to use shields in close combat?
Why can't they use them if they have a single handed weapon?

The fact that a model holds a spear with two hands has no influence on the rules of the weapon. Spears do not and never had the "requires two hands" rule and they always could use a shield in CC.

No seriously,  I'm certain that they used to "require two hands"; ergo, no shield!!
