Title: What's going on regarding Warhammer at your local game store?
Post by: GamesPoet on July 04, 2015, 03:54:41 PM
So, it's the 4th of July (oh the irony there), and I'm wondering what's going on at my local game store?  Maybe its time for a field trip.  I need to pick up some black paint anyway, so maybe it will be worth a good hoot to see what is happing regarding AoS, if they're open.

Anyone else putting in a trip and care to share your experience?

Are they even open today?

Place a phone call and find out.  Or maybe try their website and see.  Come on Darknight, I figured this was right up your alley. :icon_wink:

I found one is, one isn't, and I'm calling a third. How about your's?  :icon_cool:

My local GW is open, according to their FB page. Wife and I are putting some pants on (separate pants) and going to take a look.

Rethinking the pants, TBH.

Where I live, pants mean underwear. I hope they don't mean underwear in your country

At my FLGS there was a Star Wars tourney. I played Bushido.

No AoS.

After determining that 2 of 3 were closed for the July 4th holiday, drove down to the third.

Nothing going on regarding W:AoS.   One person staffing the counter.  No White Dwarfs were being sold.  No demo game being given.  And get this ... they didn't even have a copy of the W:AoS starter set for folks to even see.

However, there was a marketing video being played on their T.V. screen that listed Warhammer: Age of Sigmar available for pre-order at $110 instead of $125.  I didn't preorder.

I was most bummed, yet not much, by not being able to purchase a White Dwarf to be able to see the new miniature in the real.  Oh well.

Thankfully I didn't expect much, so not much of a let down either.

The only local store we have quit carrying GW products a couple of years ago. It just got to be to much of a hassle. They are also closed for today anyway.

Sorry you guys suffered. :(  I went to my local GW (actual store, not an indy.) Not a lot of action there (couple of dour guys playi g ng whfb with unpainted figures as if gaming were a chore). But the manager was super excited and I was super excited and I had fun and preordered and got to handle the figures. Very very very nice figs. Beautiful. More deets when I am off phone.

I've spent most of the day at my local GW. It was rammed.  There are a lot of excited people playing AoS, especially with some of the silly rules for the old armies.  It's been a right laugh, even if it was late before I got to try it, because I had a 40k game booked to try out the new DA codex.  I expect AoS to do well locally, and in one day it's changed from a tense competitive story to a have a laugh don't care if I win store.  And that's much more appealing to me.

But that's how warhammer should have been being played anyway, it's to bad that people couldn't do that for some reason. But because of that I give it a couple weeks before people either get bored of AoS or come up with a "system" to make it worse than it already is.

My local store was packed with AoS players. It was great to be honest. Not a single 40k game in the house. The demo box was completely painted and really well (our manager here in OKC is top notch). The attitudes were very positive and I think the crowd that visits the local store will be very supportive. I know it caused me to immediately order a Valten. You can't say a model isn't worth the points anymore thats for sure.

I think the new rules are alot of fun and I'm not talking about the goofy rules like Leitdorf and Helborg have. Hero Hammer is definitely back, but I played using the Detachment organization war scroll and it was really good... made Crossbowmen and Handgunners perform amazingly well. With the detachment war scroll rule and the General's Hold the Line, state troops can put on an offensive show. Greatswords were really good too... at least until I lost all 10 of them in a single charge by some Grail Knights.

I'm actually excited about the changes now and I look forward to helping my kids start armies now that they can grasp what to do.

Okay, more deets now.

4th of July here (major holiday) so not much action at the GW store. Only one in the State, too. Met the manager - SUPER nice guy, really enthusiastic. We chatted a bit and I got to see the figures.

The Goretide models are MAGNIFICENT in general - just lovely figures. I think I may succumb to the lure of Chaos and have some chaos all up ins this bitch. The Stormcast Eternal figures are wonderful as well - the basic troops are pretty much as we have seen, and while they are very nice indeed, they aren't anything magical. But the other figures (the dude on the cat and the flying guys and that chaplain fellow) are absolutely splendid indeed. Really very surprising for a starter set.

Have preordered. Might be going back for the midnight launch!

Well it has been 10 days since I last visited a local game store, and have begun to get curious to see if anything has changed since then at the one I visited, and maybe I'll check out the other two at some point as well.

Any news from folks elsewhere?  Are there more folks playing or not?  Has 40K taken a back seat for the moment, as WAoS is taken in to see if there is value or not in it?

I can't comment on that really as I never go into the gaming zone of my LGS... yeah bad me..
Though from what I heard is that they are playing WAoS

Very little here.  There are a few people half-heartedly playing it every once in a while.  Tried to get a game and couldn't, which is the first time that has happened to me in years of playing WFB and 40K. Most people are playing Magic, X-Wing, Flames of War, 40K, or RPGs.  There are still more games of WFb than AoS, although I haven't tried to play 8th since AoS was announced.

I think what happens with it here is going to be dependent on what's coming next.  The starter box alone didn't get people very excited about it.  Hopefully some of the new factions are going to be legit with some great scenarios, it might get people more into it.

I haven't been to the official GW store though, it's a little further away and they only had a single table to play on last time I was there.  I suppose it might be being played there.

The LGS closed about 6 months ago but another one is opening up sometime in the near future.  There were about 30 guys active that played WFB at various times so I'd be interested to see how AoS fairs once the new store opens up.

I went to my local rogue trader again yesterday to see how it was going. Not packed, but also not empty. Just about everyone was playing AoS with a few playing 40k. There was a bit of grumbling about one thing or another but for the most part everyone seemed to be having fun with it.

This is the second time I've gone and just about everyone has been playing it and enjoying it. I think I'll go again on the weekend and bring some models this time, try and find someone to get a game in.

Stopped in at two local stores today.

The first ... no longer selling GW.  The guy behind the counter said that GW wanted to make them purchase more than what they were selling.  Theer were plenty of folks in their game room playing card games and board games, but no one doing ministures of any kind.  The shelves had cards, comics, Star Wars stuff, a smattering of board games, collecting paraphanelia, and collectibel memorablia associated with various other products being sold.

The second ... still selling GW, he's the only one in his area well north of where I am living.  A few folks playing cards and board games, no miniatures this afternoon, but I've walked in there before and there have been multiple miniature games being played.  I decent selection of GW stuff which some was Warhammer, but mostly 40K, both including older OOP stuff that he leaves on the shelf until it is sold.  5 WAoS starter boxes, some Wramahordes products, full line of GW paints, and a solid selection of comics.  What was really weird was a box of 3 Skaven that looked like they were trying out for 40K or something.

I was looking for the Empire Militia, Pistoliers, Huntsmen, and Greatswords.  Only had the latter, but got me a box before they go OOP.  Almost picked up Boris on a Bear, and some of the Empire fences.  There was even an old modular hill that I still might pick up at some point.  I want to make it into a more middle eastern or southern mediterranean style than the old fashion green flocking with steep gray sides.

Into another local store I went today.  And although they had a decent amount of GW stuff on the shelves, it was mostly all newer items.  Guess that is how badly WFB is faring around here.  Not that I'm surprised with this store, it was always more of a 40K and Warmahordes location.  Interestingly, they were once a FoW place as well, but even that has been given up on with all their FoW stuff on sale currently.

For Empire there was almost nothing.  A box kit here or there, a figure or two, but no militia, pistolier, nor huntsmen available.  Oh well, on to the next store soon ...
Title: Re: What's going on regarding AoS at your local game store?
Post by: GamesPoet on July 28, 2015, 03:59:21 PM
And I just recalled ... there were no WAoS sets, only some individual figures and a box or two of figures.  It was like WAoS barely existed, and that WFB was just left overs.  Maybe there weren't any WAoS games going because it was Monday?

Although, folks were playing card game and board games.

Meanwhile, 40K seemed to have a fuller range of figures, as did the Warmahordes stuff.  It seems they've close to given up on FoW, which not sure why that has diminished.  It was big there for a good while.

Haven't seen anyone playing it yet. My regular store, it's been selling well. He's actually had a hard time gauging how much he should order and sold out of the Castellan figure the day it was released.  The other store I stop by said it's been selling okay. Again, no one in playing it in store. He said they are thinking about holding an event once they can figure a balancing system.

Into a third store yesterday.  They had a good selection of Warhammer figures available, and they were placed front and center, and selling, along with some of the newer items as well.  I picked up the second of the four kits I've been looking for, Huntsmen, no Militia nor Pistoliers available, and have begun my tally here ...

Empire Greatswords
Empire Huntsmen

Empire Militia
Empire Pistoliers

(items purchased are bolded.)

When this is completed, then I might make a second run through, but we'll see.

Of the four stores I've visited (some more than once) since July 4th, I haven't seen one game of WFB or WAoS yet.  Only one store had the initial boxed sets of WAoS, and all but one was selling some of the newer boxes of Storm dudes.  One had stopped selling GW completely.

The name of this thread has been changed to protect the innocent.

This thread does not only discuss the Empire, and could be placed in the Count's Tavern accordingly.

Thank you! :icon_cool: :::cheers:::

Hey Admins ...

Could we get this thread moved to the Count's Tavern?  There is little to no reference of WAoS (except in my original title), and the thread has developed into reports of what is happening in local hobby stores, no matter what might be happening, which is my ongoing purpose of the thread and I am the original poster.  My intent is to not have this only for WAoS.

Thank you in advance for your understanding. :icon_cool: :::cheers:::

Was in a local hobby store yesterday, an interesting side trip. What I noticed is that GW was repackaging older models with their new look.  The owner mentioned the GW had tried to get him to only stock the new packaging.  He said that he asked GW if they'd take back the old stock then, and of course they wouldn't.  His next thought was something like, "what exactly do you expect me to do with the old stock if it isn't on my shelf, you won't take it back, and I only have the new packaging on the shelf instead?"  We both had a good laugh at that.

Anyway, I saw a cool looking metal Bretonnian knight on the shelf, but I need to be careful after having just recently picked up boxes of huntsmen, militia, pistoliers, and greatswords.  There was no one playing anything other than a computer game and card games, but a decent amount of hobby material on the shelves for Warhammer, 40K, and Warmahordes.

Wow, haven't posted in this thread for awhile, but wondering how Warhammer is doing in your local store now that it is 2018?

I've seen a bit of W:AoS, but not much of anything else around here.

Folks seem to be enjoying 8th edition 40K!

Local game group here in Leeuwarden is mostly 40k (with Xwing, Bolt action and some new stuff like Legion inbound), trying to play with a mate or 2 AoS and there seems to be a bit of an interest coming.

GW store in Groningen (30-40 mins out with car) is both AoS and 40K going strong. But due to personal agenda troubles can't come over that often anymore.

I think I have four shops selling Warhammer and one miniature club nearby. They really have different takes on the hobby.

The GW store is obviously about the official GW Warhammer games. Don't know what's going on there, but there seem to be people inside and the shop keeps going strong on a near-premium location, so must be selling a fair amount of stuff.

The oldest hobby store stocks everything, and also has kept some OOP stuff on the shelves. But they stopped offering a space for miniature gaming when they moved to a new location a couple of years ago. The last game I played there was five years ago.

The newest & most dynamic miniature games store offers all the new stuff with a good variety of older stuff too. They sort of keep up the tournament scene with WH40K, T9A and AoS, roughly in this order of intensity. There's like one tournament per month, six per year being 40K, four per year being T9A and two per year being AoS. (I might get this grossly wrong, it's more of my unlearned impression.) They're really open-minded and allow all kinds of games and editions being played, even if they don't supply them. Played Kings of War there a couple of years ago.

The closest & smallest store doesn't stock everything, and must bow deep to CCG's in order to make a profit. They've become somewhat official for the most popular CCG's, organizing a series of tournament that lead to the international scene. They still have a table for miniature games, and I've seen it actually in use, but only for 40K & BloodBowl. Nothing against Fantasy, just that people seldom play it there. It's a bit cramped and the club (below) is near, so that might be the reason.

The club hosts a vast array of games & events, so that traditional Warhammer Fantasy, 40K, AoS, KoW and their smaller offshoots are but a minor part of the hobby activity. Still, that's a place where T9A and AoS are played weekly, even daily, on 1-3 tables. The fantasy games might be equally popular to the sci-fi games. Lot's of familiar faces playing traditional Warhammer and T9A, and most of the AoS players are older Warhammer fans too. No new recruits that I would know of. Still, I'd call it a lively scene even regarding Fantasy. Played there just yesterday - surprisingly the 8th ed! - breaking an eight month hiatus in gaming.

Went down to the closest local game store, and it was closed, permanently.  I'd been in it a couple times since covid 19 started and there was never more than a handful of folks there.  So probably another covid casualty.

The owner's other store is still open a couple towns away, and there was no game playing being permitted in the store.  Masks required, and signs said only stay 20 minutes, "for the safety of all".  Sorry, if I am buying and with mask, I'm browsing for as long as I choose, and no one kicked me out.  Especially when I picked up the last 2019 Killteam Starter Set, and put it on the counter while I browsed further.

Picked up two foam carry trays by Pirate Lab, their Tray A and Tray C, both are 2 inches deep.  The first is 2"x 1" so each hole can fit 1 cav or 2 inf figures.  The second has some 2 1/2" x 1 1/4" and 2" x 1 1/4", and these might work for some rounded bases I have in mind, but will see.

Also picked up some paints on sale ... 2 Runelord Brass, 2 Ogryn Camo, and 1 Dryad Bark, all in the previous style bottles for $2 each.  And picked up Ushabti Bone and Screaming Skull too.  Oh, and three new paint Army Painter brushes, too.

Anyway, it was bummer to have that closest store close.  Played all my first Warhammer Fantasy Battle games there back then.  Such a disappointment to have it disappear.

The ‘warhammer’ store in Sydney was permanently closed. It was the GW, but rebranded. I imagine Covid hurt them because business in the city dried up completely when everyone got sent home to WFH most of 2020. Regardless, it was disappointing to see.

Can't imagine the store where I started Warhammer would have ever closed had it not been for covid.  Been feeling the loss, expect I'll feel it for awhile.  I need to check in on another store further away and see how it is doing.

The closest, where you also can play is in Gent, and I know they struggle with the whole lockdown. The same with the Hobbyclub of Soth, which is my place to for games.
The closest hobby store, which mostly sells model aeroplanes and cars, as well as RC Cars is still in business. And apparently they are doing rather well with most people have more time, so they start with some older hobbies like model cars. They also have some Warhammer models and can order things, but it is the smallest part of their business.

As tacky as the local gaming store is; it was very busy the other day with numerous games of fantasy, 40K and specialist games in progress.
I noticed the local 'Sheldon' wasn't around so I'm guessing he's either moved or returned to his basement.

A couple week's back I saw a Warhammer 40K game going on between two individuals who were wearing masks.  Although at another store  saw two folks playing Warmachine that were behind a curtain around a table, but not wearing masks.  Last night I saw two groups of roleplay gamers all wearing masks in the same store as the previous 40K game seen.

Was in a game shop last night.  The GW paint rack was out of a lot of colors.  I asked the guy behind the counter, and he said they are having delays in receiving items from Games Workshop.

Hmmm ... maybe I'll start buying more of other paints. Army Painter and Vallejo have good lines, and I've always enjoyed Ceramcoat available via craft stores like Michael's.

Another game store that I buy most of my 40K stuff from has been having delay issues getting GW 40K kits.  I order something, but it takes weeks for them to receive it.

However, I tried ordering off the internet via another retailer, and it took very little time at all, perhaps because it was in stock? Or else they got some sort of priority with getting stuff from games Workshop that other independent retailers don't have, at least currently.

So it seems folks are slowly getting back to playing in person games at some of the local places.

The local store today obtained dozens of blisters, old battle forces and late 90's era miniatures which the manager bought from a collector.
It was mostly space wolf and Armageddon orks but there were a few old FB sets as well. I thought long and hard about buying the Kislev blisters.
I also eyed off the Bretonian box set but had to pass as its $400.00 and i have renovation bills to pay.

So it's almost the holiday season 2021 ...

Have you been to your local hobby store recently?

Whether W:AoS or 40K or something else ... what games have been seeing played?

I've popped into some local stores in last couple of weeks, and it seems most have become more of a buying location than a game  playing spot.  I did see a half dozen guys playing a giant apocalyptic 40K game in one store.  Saw two different pairs of guys playing 40K in another. Haven't seen much else.

Recall walking into hobby stores pre-plague and finding all kinds of games going on.  Perhaps many folks aren't ready for in person at hobby stores yet, and maybe many owners just aren't sponsoring activities as previously yet either.

My local store is still closed for gaming, so all the tables just have stock on them.

Not been into Bolton for a while - the town is sadly dying so don't have much reason to go these days.

The last I'd seen though the GW store has moved to the most prominent position it's ever occupied (it has re-located about 3 times over my lifetime), it used to be tucked away upstairs in an obscure corner of a shopping centre, now it's front and centre on the main road and is no longer Games Workshop but simply 'WARHAMMER'...

I only spoke to a young girl in there when I briefly popped in so not sure whether the old store manager was still around, he was actually a really cool guy from when I went into the old store so I really hope he's still there with the new one. I am nearing the stage where I need to think about buying myself some paints so I guess I'll be popping in sooner rather than later anyway.

our local store just moved shop to a bigger place and we helped with the move on a couple of days. So far as I know games won't be played there still, but there will be room for demo games once the dust settles of moving.

Though our local play club is still at it every Tuesday evening, only I haven't been there yet. I only recently became active again in the hobby.

I popped into GW in town this weekend to grab a shed load of paints (yes, it's finally happening!). I made a list of the ones I was after from the website then inevitably ended up buying the ones to either side of them as the representation of the colours online is always pants! Anyway I got what I needed, I think...

I've mentioned before that the GW store has moved to a more prominent location than ever before, it's nice and light and roomy compared to the old place and when I went down there, there was a couple of lads painting stuff, two parents with a younger child chatting to the guy who worked there as he was helping them paint stuff too, and maybe one or two other guys as well as myself who were browsing the shelves.

When I was in there I overheard one fella (sounds like a regular) asking the guy from the store about how a recent 40k event was and when I paid for my stuff I had a chat to him about my project and was told they were running a 'new year new army' event where the idea is to get a combat patrol starter type set (or equivalent) and paint them up by the end of the month, then they show them off as a mini armies on parade. The idea then is to add more and more to the army month on month and do the same mini parade at regular intervals to show how it grows. I may be tempted to join in but as ever my progress is always slow so we'll see...

In unrelated news I got a parking fine whilst I was in there, despite having paid for parking. My local town has apparently been notorious for it in recent times, they've even issued fines to AMBULANCES outside the health centre on numerous occasions, so much so that the ambulance service now refuse to attend the health centre if requested! It's no wonder our town centres are dying when you can't easily park anywhere anymore and when you do you get hit with s****y fines for petty nonsense. GW is now LITERALLY (and I never use that word lightly) the only place I would ever have need to visit in town now, it isn't a regular occurrence and after this I'm genuinely thinking I doubt I'll ever bother going into the town again, it's the final nail in the coffin - but I digress, not GW's fault on that front but they may end up losing my business because of it

Sounds like a good event! :icon_biggrin: :::cheers:::

Would love to do something like that.  maybe even have this site host such a project.

I went to my local shop the other day to pick up a few paints and a wetpallete I had ordered online. There wasn't much going because of the lockdown, but  "in-store pick-up" meant I could atleast go in there and have a quick chat with the owner. I also ordered some greatswords whilst I was there; support the shop a little and show GW people there's still interest in the Empire/old world.

The shop has started working together with a local 3d printing service; they have a big FDM printer set up in the store that is printing buildings for a fantasy table/display. Both the table and the printer look really cool, and it's good to see that they are embracing this new side of the hobby.

As for a 'new year, new army' project; I started an Empire army :-P I've not seen any similar events in my local area (I've also not looked very hard) so I'm just doing it on my own. A tale of 'x' painters type of campaign is still something I'd like to do someday, the Whitedwarf ones were always a good read. I tried organizing one once but it fizzled out rather quickly.

The local store is opened and caters to a wide variety of table top and RPG gamers. HOWEVER it is rarely ever open and on the off chance it is, only for a few hours.  :x
I wonder if it has anything to do with the 'house of negotiable affection' which is half a block away

The last decent game store had to close last Summer due to a massive rent increase - and the fact that the owner insisted on face diapers even after the 'official mandate' had long expired didn't help, either.
I went into a newly opened game store the other day and was reminded of an airport Starbucks.
There's another very small one fairly nearby, but they have very inconvenient hours, it's probably not worth my time.

I was just in a local store the other day, and there was no one around playing any form of Warhammer.  Instead it must have been some sort of a roleplaying afternoon because there were at least 4 different tables of roleplay games happening.

I'm pretty lucky to have one main local store, a fairly local GW store, and 2 or 3 local hobby stores I don't really frequent as much. They tend to be mostly cards with just a small group of tabletop players, but my main one is much more diverse.

Not counting the GW store, because your not actually allowed to play there much anymore, but in the other 3 its all broadly similar. Both Age of Sigmar and 40k are going strong. There's dedicated leagues, both narrative and competitive, for both. At my main store the 40k league is consistently around 60 players, and the AoS around 40ish. It depends a lot on schedule cause most of the players are into other games to. The Game of Thrones tabletop war game is picking up a fair bit of steam, D&D's always around, but I feel like Warmachine and the other wargames have fallen a little bit.

Fantasy never really went away, but did get much smaller. When I talked to the store owner back on the 6th during preorder day we were shooting the breeze about numbers. He figures there's 5-10 games of Fantasy played each week for the last few years. Mostly 8th edition, but followed up by a good number of 6th and 3rd edition respectively, with a scattering of other stuff. We're all curious to see how that changes with old world release, but there's been a bit of uh, drama in that regard recently that might make things stay a bit quiet.

I'm very involved in the narrative scene with the local store. Often serving as one of the main campaign writers and I run a lot of the tutorials or getting started stuff for new players. We're planning to wait till the spring or possibly summer, and then run a fun, easy mode Border Princes style campaign for Fantasy players using the new rules. There's a fair bit of interest, and as the hot new thing we're pretty confident a lot of the other players will take a break from their usual stuff to give it a go.

Reporting from local hobby stores on how things are going with W:TOW ...

1. The store which is usually my go to for picking up 40K figures, and they sold out of all things W:TOW

2. Another store didn't get their order of W:TOW yet, apparently due to the bad weather that prevented multiple flights at southern U.S. airports from flying out in time due to winter weather issues.

3.  This store, where I got my Bret army /starter box today (last one from their initial shipment), had a small selection of items available, and most Bretonnian items were sold out, while not one Tomb Kings army/starter box had sold, plus all rule books and such were gone except, except a few Arcane Journals.
