Dogs of War - infantry army list WIP
« on: January 21, 2005, 09:35:38 PM »
I've settled on a DoW army to be my second army (my first army is Tzeentch for which I barely have 500 points painted), though I'm a big Empire fan (mainly for its detachments).

I think that Empire players will be able to give me the best advice regarding this list, as it seems to me that Empire troops resemble Dogs of War most.

The Paymaster is a must, obviously. He's got a great weapon only because I will be using Eltharion to represent him.

Characters:
-General, heavy armor, shield @ 99
-Paymaster, heavy armor, shield, great weapon @ 65
-Captain, Pegasus, heavy armor, Enchanted shield, lance @ 118
-Hireling Wizard, 2 x Dispel Scroll @ 110

Core:
-23 Pikemen, heavy armor, champion, standard, musician (General goes here) @ 283
-19 Pikemen, heavy armor, standard, musician (Wizard goes here) @ 229
-10 Crossbowmen @ 80
-10 Crossbowmen @ 80
-10 Crossbowmen @ 80
-9 Duellists, pistols @ 81
-9 Duellists, pistols @ 81
-9 Duellists @ 45
-9 Duellists @ 45
-9 Duellists @ 45
-5 Heavy Cavalry, barding @ 105
-5 Heavy Cavalry, barding @ 105

Special:
-19 Paymaster's Bodyguard, heavy armor, champion, musician (Paymaster goes here) @ 210

Rare:
-1 Light Cannon @ 85
-1 Halfling Hot Pot @ 50

Total: 1,996

Notes:
-General: downgrade to Captain?
-Heavy Cavalry: change for units of 3 Ogres with great weapons?
-Captasus: good idea or not in this army?
-Enchanted Shield: for Captasus or General?
-Hot Pot: upgrade to Light Cannon?
-Duellists: I intend to screen the three infantry units with the pistol-less Duellists, and use the pistol-wielding ones to protect my flanks (together with the Heavy Cavalry). Think that's a good idea, or would it be better to drop these and just add 4 extra models to each of the big infantry units? Should I try to find points to give either additional hand weapons to the pistol-less Duellists, or even pistols?

Thanks for your time :)

Did I comment on this list before? It looks familiar.

Yes, keep the General. Ld 9 is important. Keep the pegsus also; very handy.

The cheapo units of duelists could stay, but watch out for panic tests caused by them being wiped out. Alternately, swap them for two units of light cavalry with spears - fast and flexible, especially good for redirecting nasty units.

30 xbows is too many really - it's hard to effectively deploy that many ranked shooting units. 20 might be a better bet.

The bodyguard are a terrible unit, and not a very safe place for the paymaster. I'd drop a unit of xbows and upgrade the bodyguard to pikemen - all those first-striking pikes at least sheild the paymaster from sucide charges from light units (pistoliers, teradons, that sort of thing).

Ironguts might be a nice alternative to the heavy cavalry if you had the points free.
Hey, I could still beat up a woman!
If I wanted to.

DoW forum :) I wanted to get some Empire input :)

Thanks for your comments. It really helps someone like me, as I've yet to play my first game of Warhammer. Now that I have about 500 points of Chaos painted, I may venture out to a GW store some day soon to get a real feel for the game. I just can't wait to get started on this DoW army. Already have a regiment of Phoenix Guard ready for assembly (will use these as Pikemen and Bodyguard, though your comment about the Bodyguard unit is in line with my initial thoughts on this unit as compared to the Pikemen, where the first strike ability seems most useful for keeping the Bodyguard alive).

I think I'm going to try to replace the Heavy Cavalry with Ogres. That would make this a complete infantry army (aside from the Captasus) and would fit with my fluff, which has this army spend most of its time in the woods, ala Robin Hood and company :)

i don't like the multiple bare duelests... i say pistols or bust personally..

what are they going to do?? nothing, they're just WEAK meat sheilds that won't cause wounds which are panic tests WAITING to happen.

paymasters bodygaurd suck.
 otherwise, peachy.

also Light Calvery with spears, nice.....

Wow Jes, you're being busy today :)

Could you please take a bit more time to check on your posts? I'd rather see a handful of good ones than a dozen poorly written ones.

Thanks,

I do what i can. Someone has to give advice on the dozens of army lists that the majority of people seem to ignore...

(well i'm sure they've given advice hundreads of times, and simply get tired of it) so i'm doing my bit :D

besides, cant' sleep.

Anyway, i'll try to be more careful.
