At that point level, it is VERY hard for normal ork boyz to survive BT marine units.  They have the initiative to devastate small units of orks and the armor save to survive whatever comes back at them.

Did some painting of 20 boyz yesterday.  Got two coats of scorched brown on boots and waist belts.  Touched up some calthan brown on their vests.  Did all their sluggas in a first coat of bolt gun (choppas done previously), and did all their belt buckles, helmets, chest plates, and shoulder plates.

Was considering giving them black pants, but might go with dark gray instead so that there is a better contrast with the dark brown boots.  Probably need to experiment with one, finishing him up to his completion, and see what else I come up with for a scheme on top of the base coats.  Then maybe post a picture!

2nd week, 500 point level, two games using same list as before vs Grey Knights and then Blood Angels.  Lost both.

Against Grey Knights, went up against 5 terminators with Ard boyz and Warboss, but lost all but Warboss who escaped in the truck (it didn't get taken out until turn 4).  Only lost that unit, but played my band of 20 boyz less aggressively than could have been wise.

Got pounded by Blood Angels, 3 jump squads of five, including honor guard, but he had feel no pain.  The enemy might not have felt it, but the boyz did.

Anyway still picked up 8 more points for purchases, and I now have 23 to pick some new slots.

Special Characters are starting to be snapped up, and I think I'll be picking up Ghazahkull, if someone else doesn't get him first.  Then I'll need to make one.  Also considering Zagstruck for my Stormboyz, which would leave me with 3 points.

I'm considering bringing Nobs in a truck with the Warboss next game, since nastier stuff is starting to make their appearances.

Put into purchase Ghazghkull with 10 of the 23 points I earned in the first 2 weeks.  Got to hope I got it in before someone else put in for him.

Then I'll need to either purchase one or convert one ... lol.

Also, might do a different list for week 3.  Took out the ard boyz riding with the Warboss and put in 3 Nobs instead.  One is armed with a claw, one with a big choppa, and a painboy for "feel no pain".  Not sure how much better this is.

Week 3 saw me taking out the Ard Boyz unit and having the Nobs I mentioned previously go with the Warboss in the Trukk.  Had three losses, but not too concerned about my record now being 2 wins, 6 losses because I'm learning and 4 of the 6 losses have been close.

This time first game was against Tyranids.  He had two units of 3 warriors, one joined by a Prime.  He had another unit of one figure that had some sort of funky missile weapon that could go around cover, and a drop pod like thing carrying a creature that caused leadership rolls on three dice with the difference in wounds, and those being added to his strength and wounds.  This was not a close game because again I wasn't aggressive enough nor familiar with the enemy yet.

Then I got another game in against the same BT player as before.  This time I played much better tactically, and the nobs with painboy seemed helpful.  He took more casualties this time, it came down to the final turn, almost got a draw, and this was a significant improvement over my prior game against this very skilled player.

Game three was versus Grey Knights made up of 4 squads of five, all power weapons, a couple of hammers, one psy gun, and an inquisitor with no add ons.  I took alot of shooting casualties early, but he hung one squad out away from significant support and my nobs cut them down.  This guy's tactics seemed lacking, and it came down to the last turn with my Warboss and Painboy being a 1/16th of an inch away from contesting for a draw.

My experience continues to gain, but with so much to learn, there's alot to take in and think about.  In the meantime, after three weeks, Round 1 is over, scored 32 points, bought Ghazghkull for later rounds, and Round 2 is at 750 points for the next three weeks.  Need to take an inventory of the figures I have available, purchase an army slot or two using the 22 points I have after buying the SC with 10, create a list for 750 points, and do some more painting.

Remember to keep that cover in your favour! Even if you have to take one more round of shooting, chances are more boyz will reach the enemy with a 4+ cover save than without it! Keep shootas screened by choppas and shoot through your own units! Even though the marines get a 4+ cover save, they're still going to use their armour of 3+, meaning you have nothing to lose but a 4+ to gain against the return fire!  :::cheers:::

But I find your lack of pictures....  Disturbing  :closed-eyes:

It sounds like you are doing really well.  From your description, you are playing a good ork list against some pretty competitive builds.  Keep at it!

Oooh! I like that idea of having the boyz screen the shoota boyz, and will give that a try, thank you. :icon_cool:

With 750 in points here's a draft list ...

Warboss, Power Claw, Twin-linked Shoota, Heavy Armor      95
4 Nobs, 1 Claw, 3 Big Choppas, Pain Boy, Heavy Armor, Trukk   220
8 Boyz w/shootas, 1 Nob, big choppa, 1 Rockkit Launcha   73
20 Boyz, 1 Nob w/armor, claw, boss pole, 2 Big Shootas      180
4 Deffkoptas, Twin-linked Rokkits                                        180
TOTAL      748

The Warboss/Nobz unit has been strengthened, but perhaps there's a way to provide another Claw to provide extra power attacks.

I run shoota boyz almost exclusively.  The only ones with choppas are the ones I couldn't convert with shootas!  Normally I run it 60/40 shootas to choppas.  The extra shooting far out weighs the loss of a single attack.

I would also get another klaw in the nob unit and drop a big choppa.

The adjustment would have the list look like this ...

Warboss, Power Claw, Twin-linked Shoota, Heavy Armor      95
4 Nobs, 2 Claw, 1 Big Choppa, Painboy, Heavy Armor, Trukk   225
9 Boyz w/shootas, 1 Nob w/big choppa, 1 Big shoota          74
20 Boyz, 1 Nob w/claw, boss pole, 2 Big Shootas      175
4 Deffkoptas, Twin-linked Rokkits                                        180
TOTAL      749

PhillyT ... thanks for that idea on the shootas.  I'll add more shoota boys to that unit when more are made up.  I have other regular boyz, but prefer using figures as modeled if possible, and I have 9 currently plus one with a big shoota or a rockit launcha, and a nob, which gets them to 11 max at the moment.

(Don't mind if other players use substitutes, but it seems easier for me and my opponent when I can come to the table top and tell them everything is as modeled.)

Last Friday night faced Dark Angels and Black Templars, the latter for a third time in four weeks.

The DA player had a unit of 3 bikes, 5 terminators with various weapons, and a unit of lightening claws that dropped in with a leader.  The bikes got taken out by my koptas immediately, warboss and nobz assaulted the basic terminators taking them down to 2 before the warboss retreated into the trukk, and the lightening claws took out most of the boyz with the remaining ones fleeing.  Then the lightening claws went after the shoota boys which took them away from the only center objective and allowed my warboss to get inbetween them and the center.  This slowed them down long enough to keep them away from the center for a draw on turn five, but it went to turn six and a loss for me.

The BT player had 2 squads in rhinos, 2 speeders with missiles, and some leader dude that he must take at 750 points or higher giving all his men some free re-rolls.  The game was table quarters and kill points, and he placed all his forces at the back edge of his deployment zone.  My orks had to go across his whole area to get to them while he missiled my koptas and trukk.  When the battle was joined the end result was he won by one kill point.

Thus ... two more close losses, which gives me 2 wins and 8 losses (6 of which have been close).

This type of tournament is tough for your orks.  IF you are playing mostly marines, kans are your best option but it doesn't sound like it is easy to get them into your list.  Most marine units will struggle against them.

I've purchased a box of Kans.  Going to make up two, and see if I can find my lone metal one to go with them, at some point.  The parts for the third are going to be used to help with my conversion of Ghazhkull, and he'll be entering the fighting eventually.

Careful with that conversion.  Ghaz is significantly smaller than a kan.

Yep, and he will be placed on a 40mm base, not the 60mm base used with the kans.

After not being able to make it for a league night for two weeks in a row, Christmas, cold, computer, and car issues, made it back last night.  Only got in a game against IG and won.  My opponent brought with him 2 chimeras, 3 vet squads, a command squad, and a kommissar.  He tried to stand back and shoot me, but my koptas dropped a tank, band of 20 took out two vet squads, nobs & warboss took out the other tank and then his command squad.

That brings me to 3 wins, 8 losses (6 were close calls).  Moving on to the 1,000 point round next.

Update on that league ... my participation level tailed off.  I got in a few more games here and there, last one was at 1750 points versus Black Templars and got beat decisively.  However, the individual rounds are now all done, and we are moving on to the final game, a big Apoc game on two different tables, 5 objectives on each, total number of captured objectives after 5 turns wins, think there's something like 15 to 18 players.  Need to work out what my 1,000 points will be, definitely bringing a kopta formation, and whatever I got that can move to get the Orks close in asap.

Don't have any ork bikers yet.  Took a defkopta formation of 9, shot up some space marines, and then used their redeployment to drop bombs and drive them into some terminators.  Also a took a trukk with nobs and a warboss, they took an objective, which drew some more attention away from other objectives.  Then they all went down, but the trukk stayed hidden near the objective, while a huge daemon thing took out some more space marines.  Our team did well with 5 of 6 objectives on one table, and 3 of 6 on the other.  Final score was 8 to 4.

Haven't played 40K since last April! :icon_eek: :icon_lol:

Finally decided to pick up "Dark Vengeance".  Yeah, like vengeance would be anything other than dark.  Certainly not pink with sky blue polka dots.

Anyway, I digress.  Found a copy of the "Limited Edition" set that some dolt had put on hold when it came out and still hadn't picked it up yet, so its now mine.  I like the Chaos figures, but no real fan of the Dark Angels, and not sure what I'm going to do with them yet.

But, at least now I have a rules book, even though I found the front cover to have a mangled lower right corner.  Interestingly, I noticed that the rules book had been turned face down inside the plastic wrapping, almost like someone didn't want their supervisor to see the smashed booklet get put inside with the rest of the reading material.

And I bought an Ork Bomma!  And what's this with GW calling it an Ork Bommer?  Duh, no Ork in his right mind would call it that!

Not sure when I'll play my next game, but I've had a bit of a hankering for one lately.  Missed out on the recent escalation league, but without having the rules, it would have been pointless for me to signup anyway.  If the next few months weren't so focused on other projects, I might put the Bomma together in time for the spring, but we'll see.

Finally getting around to cleaning up and beginning to build an Ork Bomma.  Progress has been slow, since building models hasn't been one of my favorite things to do.  Going to try to work out how it will be set up so that I can interchange various weapon parts with magnets.

Spray painted some black base coated Aegis Defense Line pieces a "Hammered" metal color, so I can add some anti-aircraft to my Ork list.  Got out all my Orks to remind myself of what work needs to be done, and organize a 1500 point list for a local league.  Also, put some magnets on my Battlewagon to be able to mount a deff rolla or reinforced ram, and since I didn't glue the rolla arms to the rolla itself, the rolla actually moves!

Got out my 10 shoota boyz, one with a rokkit launcher, and finally converted the squad's Nob's slugga to a shoota.  Gave him a big choppa converted from a bit that I yanked from a stormboyz kit.  Got the skin painted dark green on these, but need to do some more painting on this unit for everything else that they got.  Eventually going to do up some more shoota boyz to make a unit of at least 20, maybe 30 at some point.

Got in my first game of 6th Edition and found it relatively smooth to play.  Think I like the changes made from 5th.  There seems to be more of a need for thinking about tactical placement of figures, and combat seems to go quicker.

My Orks vs. Grey Knights, 1500 points.  Games went 6 turns, 3 objectives, might have tried to do too much.

With board broken into 6 sections like so ...

1 ... 2 ... 3
4 ... 5 ... 6

He placed an objective each into 2 & 3 inside trees, I placed one in the open in 4.  My 15 shootas went inside an Ageis Defense Line w/AA in 4.  Warboss and Nob squad w/Painboy in a Trukk on edge of 4&5.  Battlewagon with 20 'Ard Boyz on edge of 4&5.  Units of 5 Defkopptas and 4 Defkoptas in center of 5.  The enemy placed rhinos with small squads inside woods near objectives in 2 and 3, with a larger transport behind another woods in 1.  My attack went at the bigger transport swinging everything except the shootas at it and taking it out.  My Trukk didn't make it past Turn 1, and I had two turns of play before an enemy walker and two enemy squads deepstruck in 2, and took out my Battlewagon, while I couldn't get close enough to the other objectives on foot fast enough, and still defend the one in 4.  The deepstrikers had some sort of teleportation skill and attacked into 4.  I'm now thinking it might have been better to go at the objective in 2 first and force my opponent to respond to that.

Looking forward to my next game.

It's been awhile since I played 40K. :icon_lol:

Decided to unearth this thread, and post up my 40K Chaos force.

From the Dark Vengance starter set ...
1 Chaos Lord
1 Helbrute
6 Chosen
20 Cultists

From the 2016 Start Collecting ...
1 Chaos Terminator Lord
1 Helbrute
10 Chaos Marines

From the 2019 Start Collecting ...
1 Master of Possession
1 Venom Crawler
2 Obliterators
2 Greater Possessed
10 Chaos Marines

From the 2023 Battleforce ...
1 Damon Prince
1 Heldrake
5 Chaos Terminators
10 Possessed

When I have nothing else better to do, the plan is to turn these into a Wordbearers army.
