So there was the rule around magic weapons vs mundane, and you always have to use the magical variety. Does this also apply to shields?
I am thinking about the Charmed Shield vs Great Weapon choice for some bare bones warrior priests…

I am considering taking 2 bare bones priests - 1 Ulric, 1 Sigmar to float around as buff characters, in units, out of units to challenge, whatever. And I am curious if there is the option to choose GW if I wanted to instead of the Charmed Shield in particular combats, or perhaps once the 5+WS has already been used up previously in battle.

Here's my take: the rules on pg 338 concerning using the required use of Magic Weapons clearly applies to weapons, but armour is not mentioned here. The section on pg 340 concerning Magic Armour does not have a similar bullet point; therefore you can choose whether to use the Charmed Shield or GW per each combat (when appropriate) regardless of whether it has been popped.

I think this is indirectly covered in the FAQ. They discussed using an armour that also gives a ward save. IE Armour of Tarnus.

A wizard lord on griffon wearing the armour can either have a 4+ save or 6+/5++ and can choose whichever is more beneficial in a particular circumstance.

I was misremembering slightly, but only the fine details.

Quote
Q: A character mounted on a ridden monster or a chariot
can choose to use their own or their mount’s armour value,
whichever is better. If the character wears magic armour but I
choose to use the mount’s armour value, can I still claim other
benefits conferred by the magic armour?
A: No. You must use a magic item fully or not at all.

The only magic items with a 'must use if possible' clause are weapons.

I was intending to choose between using the shield or not at all to use the GW. I see no conflict currently which is good.
