After the End Times... What have you been up to?
« on: May 09, 2016, 12:32:21 AM »
Well... I gave up. Warhammer is now officially dead in the greater context of my gaming and local hobby scene. I was the last hold out. I ordered dragon rampant hoping to salvage some of my fantasy gaming but I have the gut feeling that my days of mass fantasy battles are done... I'm sorry my friends. It's a fight I have lost.

I've switched over to some great alternatives. I've had the oprtunity to explore Strange Aeons - it's been a ton of fun. It's allowed me to enjoy some of my Call of Cthulhu roots and X-Files stile gaming. In addition I've been playing lots of Frostgrave; I really recomend it, I find it satisfying and it allows me to enjoy decent skirmish gaming in a club environment. X-Wing Campaigns have become the centerpiece of gaming events I host- and on the whole I have increased the number of Boardgames played- including a recent string of Memoir 44, Kings Forge, March of the Ants and other games have blessed me with some really great gaming experiences recently. Just played some Deadzone and Uncharted seas too! I've been lucky, I've had more opportunity for gaming recently, but WHFB stands like a doomed shadow atop of my gaming shelves. Unloved and with thousands of points unassembled.

What have you cats been up to lately? Pics or it didn't happen!

Necromunda...

Mostly at this point using just self built terrain. I love the old card buildings but they aren't exactly gritty. Yaktribe provides an amazing resource for record keeping too. Here's our campaign...

I ran as far away from it(ET & AoS) as I could while still playing recognisable WHF - right now that means Mordheim warbands aplenty, but if & when I do dig out and finish a WHFB army it will be set in fluff terms around that same time, the Age of Three Emperors/Vampire Wars era.

I've no real interest in other games; I got into tabletop for the WHF/40K settings, and I can't just swap them out for something vaguely similar in the same way that liking Lord of the Rings films doesn't mean I'd be interested in going to see Twilight even if they're nominally related in genre and both part of the same format(film vs tabletop games).

I'm getting into historicals, specifically Ancients (Hail Caesar). I'm finishing up my first couple of units now, and will post pics when they're done.

I'm also considering having a bit of a clearout and selling some of the WHF stuff which I know I'm never going to use. I'll hang onto a lot of it but there's no point my having so many hundreds of figures (mostly Empire) I'm most likely now never going to paint let alone deploy on the table. I'll be selling some of it over the coming weeks/months; I'll stick up a post in the trading forum to let people know what's available.

I have continued exactly as before, at the same (admittedly slow) pace, with my Tilean Campaign - painting, modelling, GMing, photographing and story-writing, even the occasional 8th ed battle, with all the same folk. TBH, I did not feel like I was really part of the 8th ed WFB scene before it died, what with the way we do things (campaign army lists and my own take on the Warhammer world, well, Tilea at least) and what with not attending a club or store. Whenever I tried attending such clubs, the folk didn't really 'get' what I was doing anyway!

As pics are required, here's a sneak peek preview the upcoming (and in production now) end of season reports ...

Photobucket has now re-destroyed my pictures, so the first half of my collected works thread is no longer working again. To see my website version of the campaign thread, with fully functioning pictures, please go to https://bigsmallworlds.com/

Last year, I played some 7th ed and Kings of War.

But the 9th Age really strikes me as a good version of WHFB, built on the 8th ed engine. Had three games this spring and planning for more.

Figure-wise, it's puffy sleeves and beards for me. My 300 painted Empire models are only a fifth of my collection, and it took 7.5 years to get this far. So I'm counting 30 more years of WHFB Empire hobby before I run out of stuff. Some scenery to make too. Not to speak of all the other armies I've hoarded over the years. I could basically start a club of my own if I wasn't already a member of a club...  :-)

But not looking back to GW as it is now. Yet even that might change, if they put out something interesting again, at an affordable price. Never say never.

Padre- you're a monster and one of my greatest inspirations on this forum. You're content alone is what keeps me coming back month after month. I owe ya a beer (or a sandwich) if I'm ever in the area again. You're awesome, and one of the greatest contributors to this hobby that I know of. You bring out the art of miniatures.

Zygmund & @ Future Posts- pics or I have to assume you're making up stories.

Nobody does any other gaming? Everyone just looks at their pile of plastic and mutters a sigh?

Well, if you insist...

Romans at the back; Balearic slingers in front. Both still need a couple of touch-ups, and basing, and the Romans are also waiting on shields. More Balearic slingers, plastic this time, in the pile to right of frame, who will be next.

Still painting Empire, Undead Legion, Khone warriors, and some Skaven for a friend.

Still playing 8th Edition Warhammer and loving it.

Promoting the hobby wherever possible and planning to run a mega-game of warhammer at a GT in the fall.

Ha!  I dropped Warhammer with the dawn of 8th.  Never really looked back.

In its place I do complicated Mordheim style campaigns set in Lustria, Araby or the Border Princes.  The current campaign:

Still using 8th (with house rules) to run a TK vs Dwarfs campaign:

I've been playing a lot of board games as well - Chaos in the Old World, Evolution and The Grizzled being some of my favourites.
cheers,

What have I been up to after he End Times? same thing I was up to before the End Times: playing warhammer 8 (and painting decent-sized units for it). Admittedly, there are less people around who are keeping with the program but, still enough for now.

For the unbeliveres:

March: Empire vs. Dwarfs

March: Empire vs. Empire

April: Empire vs. Dwarfs

It's 1-1 now between the Empire and the Dwarfs, so there must be a final match to decide. There are still many good people playing WH I haven't gamed with. So looking forward for a lively hobby scene this year.

Other than that, some ten sessions of epic roleplaying this year. And lots and lots of play/game talk with friends.

Well since I don't have pictures, I must not be gaming! :icon_eek:

Not.  Mostly historical nowadays, although I haven't given up on fantasy or sci-fi yet.

I don't give up quite so easily, apparently.

I've dabbled in Kings of War, but recently started up a narrative 8th edition campaign using Albion as the setting. That's been consuming a disproportionate amount of my time because I do most of the writing and organising. It's all up on the blog:

http://hoodlinghole.blogspot.com.au/p/albion-campaign.html

Also, a pic. Since that seems to be a requirement...  :-P

Recently came back to assembling/painting my Empire, thanks to one of my friends. Other than that, I'm playing more and more 40K and expanding my 30K Alpha Legion force. I even bought a Knight not so long ago.

We plan to launch a massive campaign of 40K in two months time. The Planetary Expansions has been already bought and is ready to go.

Well, I've pretty much dropped all of my hobbying for now since my quadruplets have turned one and are taking up all of my time. Still, everyone in my area has quit. I was the main person pushing it here. I think there are several people who will pick it back up if I ask them to, but I just don't have half a day to devote to 8th right now.

I'll hang on to all of my models and teach my kids how to play 8th once they are old enough though. Until then most of my gaming days are over. I'll probably play the occasional Heroclix game every now and then (since I already have several thousand) but other games just don't interest me at all. It takes a lot of effort for me to start something new and I have to have my curiosity at a peak to investigate it. I pushed really hard as soon as the ET started to collect everything is ever want to play with and give myself years of future hobby work because I believed that GW was going to do exactly what they did. So moving forward, 8th edition will still be my game, but I won't be attacking it the way I have been.

It's very sad to read some of the comments here... why Warhammer Fantasy is dead?? Ok, GW will not produce more books any longer (or not... see below).
But guys, how many years for the last update of CHESS? And obviously, there are a lot of people still playing chess!
You or your community really needs a company behind the game? Why?
I love warhammer. I played many other games but nothing like Warhammer. I love its background, its atmosphere, its map, its rules... And I and my friends will continue playing. In fact, I was really annoyed with GW, since lasts years for tones of reasons (meanly, language policy).

What we can do now?

1) Continue to play 8th edition
2) Play 7th edition (or other)
3) Use 9th Age ------ my choice
4) Wait until GW changes his policy and be prepared for the return of warhammer. Something I am sure will happens

If TW: Warhammer will become a huge success, I hope that they'll bring back WFB back. But I also know that this is probably just wishful thinking.

Oddly enough, my return to the hobby came in around the End Times. It started as just painting a few individual figures, but grew out of hand. I've been planning and overthinking a narrative campaign in an alternate Warhammer setting, ten years after Marienburg's independence. Rules will most likely not be WFB, but I have also been overthinking the mechanics of playing it as solo or remote opponent(s) (online) games. To that end, I've been painting and terrain building late at night, as time allows.

I even met up with some old friends and played a couple of KoW games -- my first gaming in something like 4 years. Not my favorite game, but it was a good game to play some decent sized battles with our old Warhammer armies. Rules are easy enough that I caught on pretty quick - good for someone who can only meet up for games every few years!
