Ostlandguard?conversion ideas (needhelp)
« on: August 17, 2021, 04:55:41 AM »
Hello all!

I've gotten back into playing fantasy (9th age!), and I want to have a good size unit of reiksguard infantry, but my chose proviceis Ostland so they have to be Ostland guard obviously.

I want to start from scratch as with the models, but I still want to maintain to what the rules they have (Full plate armor, shield, hand weapon (option to have greatweapon instead of shield).  I have been thinking about the best way to do this, and I am struggling to find a great torso/legs to represent the "Full plate" feel.

My initial thoughts were this:

Head: - TBD Could be plastic GS head.
Torso/Legs - Plastic GS
Arms - Use the white wolf bits with 1 handed hammers from the knights box for arms. Then chop off the 1 handed hammers so I can replace with swords.
Shield - Bretonnian bull shield
Sword - TBD (want a uniform sword across the unit...unlike what is provided in other empire boxes for a professional army)

As I mentioned before, I just feel like the Plastic GS kit doesn't really do the full plate rules wise justice.  I'd be ok with the helmet not being a full helm like it is with the empire knights, but I really want to sell "these guys have full plate armor".  Anyone have thoughts for an alternative?

Also, if you have an idea for the other TBD items I'd appreciate those thoughts as well!

Maybe use Pistolier torsos or perhaps Knight torsos.  The Knights also have helmeted heads that could be used.

You sure have checked the 9th Age Miniature guide?
These seem to be decent heavily armored sword & shield infantry:

White Knight's Human Elite Infantry:

Last Sword Reichguard:

Norba Miniatures' Knights of the Kingdom on Foot:
https://www.norbaminiatures.com/en/miniatures/256-knights-of-the-kingdom-on-foot.html

The 9th Age Miniature guide doesn't have the most recent Perry foot knights.

Perry Miniatures Agincourt Foot Knights:
https://www.perry-miniatures.com/product/ao-60-agincourt-foot-knights-1415-29/

They also lack the Wargames Foundry Armoured Men at Arms:
https://www.wargamesfoundry.com/collections/men-at-arms/products/med102-armoured-men-at-arms
These would be easy to add a shield on. But these are probably quite small.

If you go kitbashing full plate out of the GW Greatswords box, I'd say the legs are mostly the weakest part. So you would need to find full plate legs elsewhere. Since they are not to be found, I'd rather go with an altogether different manufacturer/miniature for starters. One of the above. From these boxes, you would also get decently armed arms and a variety of one-hand weapons, mostly swords.

As to the swords in a professional army, I think professional fighters do not choose mass-produced state supplied swords, but choose their swords individually. So you have no need to unify the sword type across the ranks. Just like you don't have to unify the shield types (although you want the bull emblem). Hammers, axes and flails could be a good choice too for heavy infantry.

In order to make them 'Empire', you might want to search ebay for helmeted GW Greatsword heads or the OOP GW Knightly Orders heads.

Hope this helps.

I did not realize they provided a 9th age miniature guide.  :icon_redface:

I should clarify the "professional" army.  I'll say I was disappointed when they updated the state troops box from 6th to 7th due to some of the visual changes to the units.

Good ideas.  I'll need to ponder.

THank you!

Hopefully, I'll be able to provide some updates!
