Title: Solland Army
Post by: Count James on February 05, 2024, 05:20:00 PM
Hello everyone!

So I've just finished my first model in... too long - at the time of writing this photo represents my entire collection of Games Workshop miniatures. Long story short, I had to sell it all about a decade ago (all that remains is photos) but the release of Warhammer: The Old World has finally sparked enough interest to finally get back into the hobby... whether I will actually manage to get any games in is another question entirely...

My approach: I'm essentially going to try to rebuild what has been lost... my Wissenland/Solland army, although I think I'll go full Solland this time -  starting with the Sister Superior as Warrior Priestess below. Have to say she fits the 25mm base better than the 20mm! I'm kind of thinking of just getting two of whatever Battalion box we get (plus eBay vigilance) and using that to try to recreate my old force!

I'll update this as I get more models and get them done... it'll be a slow process...

Very nice painting! I recently started my Empire army, which will be a mix of Ulricans and Kislevites. The Mordheim models are one of the best, so good idea to use them as much as possible in the army:)

I really want a Freelance Knight to use as my General but... not cheap to get hold of. We'll see...

That's a nice paintjob I've gotta say, I myself plan to get about 20 SoS 3D-printed since, you know, how to find 'em. I found a good vendor online that sells 3D-scans (or at least very good recreations) of Old Hammer minis, and they've got Bertha Bestraufrung.

Although I think I will be paint an army for Osterlund, that should allow me to field my kitbashed KotWW and my enormous GS collection.

Sadly I can't 3D-print... I have managed to get hold of a Bertha model for a reasonable price though, as well as unit of metal Greatswords (in keeping with the 'get my old stuff back' plan) so they're going to be next up. Depending on Royal Mail...

I bought a PLA 3D pinter 2 years ago that's collecting dust, because it can't print GW scaled man-sized minis. You'd need a SLA resin printer for that.
So I fought some 3D printing services on line, send them my files, which I rescaled in Blender, and got them mailed to me. Depending on the service, if you print in bulk it's possibly not gonna be that much cheaper than just buying plastic. But for Mordheim, it's not like I got that many choices...

Update: redid the base on the Warrior Priest and finished up Bertha Bestraufrung as a second Warrior Priest on foot...

Unit of 25 Greatswords are underway... they're gonna be a while because for some insane reason I've decided to try to paint the clothing parts properly, rather than block+wash like last time around. Also now have an old Warhammer Quest Witch Hunter to add in. Definitely no more eBay until the box set is out!

Apologies for the double-post - I've just read through the amazing Solland thread here: http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=26245.0 (http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=26245.0) and, well, if I wasn't inspired before, I am now!  :icon_cool:

So The Old World narrative is set a time of civil strife in the Empire, so no-one is going to notice a bunch of revolutionaries raising an army in the ex-province of Solland/Sudenland and demanding a seat at the table!

Much of that thread involves what we termed "The Solland Effort of 2524".  This was a fluff campaign that was post 2522 where the WFB fluff had left off prior to the horrible EoT crud. However, there's nothing that says that can't be Solland rebels planning and scheming in the days of the re-released Old World currently.

They do have a certain charm... I've yet to encounter a post-2010 sculpt, but looking at the Cities of Sigmar models I can see what you're getting at...!

Finished the Greatswords (nearly... I need to do something with the banner but it's late and I've already messed it up once...)

(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2024/2/19/1186878_sm-Empire%2C%20Greatswords%2C%20Sisters%20Of%20Sigmar%2C%20The%20Old%20World%2C%20Warhammer%20Fantasy.jpg) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1186878-Empire%2C%20Greatswords%2C%20Sisters%20Of%20Sigmar%2C%20The%20Old%20World%2C%20Warhammer%20Fantasy.html)

Also my phone seems to have done something funky with the colours and focus, I'll probably update this once it's daytime again and I can take a better pic...

They're great!

At first I thought they were very small models, but it was an effect of the big bases. These old metal models were designed to fit on 20mm, so look very sparse on 25mm.

I quite like that they actually have space to swing the big swords without decapitating each other  :icon_lol:

Update: Done the Witch Hunter! He's the old Warhammer Quest model and I couldn't resist a bit of a homage to his original off-yellow colour scheme...

(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2024/2/20/1187016_sm-Empire%2C%20The%20Old%20World%2C%20Warhammer%20Fantasy%2C%20Witch%20Hunters.JPG) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1187016-Empire%2C%20The%20Old%20World%2C%20Warhammer%20Fantasy%2C%20Witch%20Hunters.html)

And now I'm completely out of models. So much so that I'm currently working on the movement tray for the Greatswords out of desperation for something to paint.

Side rant: eBay prices have gone literally insane lately... I want two more greatswords to round out the unit/fill up the movement tray. I paid £4 a model for the ones I have, which was painful enough - the cheapest I can find is now at least double that! There's a few auctions I'm keeping an eye on but I'm not hopeful. So I think I'm waiting for the Empire release which is going to be aaaaaaages! Sad.

The eBay prices are increasing before my eyes... (and I have nothing better to do than watch since nothing left to paint) -  I can only hope the bottom drops out of the market once GW get around to releasing our army!

Not only eBay, I saw a couple of ice cream cartons full of assorted old HeroQuest stuff go for £60-odd at auction over the weekend. Estimate was £4 lol.

Oooh an excuse to wishlist!

Out of everything that's OOP, the metal Elector Count on Griffon is the one I really want. I know there's that plastic one probably coming back... but I really don't like it and will pay extra for the 'proper' one (imo).
Otherwise, War Wagon? Maybe some special characters (the various Elector Counts), knight variants or the old command groups? I think most of the army was available in all-plastics from about 7th edition onward and I'm hoping most if not all of it will come back.
Honestly I just want the Griffon. A new Knight kit would be nice too, although I do have a soft spot for the battle ponies.

The figures are worth a few dollars each at best.
Some of the vehicles now command tripple digits. If you have Amidala's ship, you can probably get $200.00 for it

*coughs* back on topic, haha...

Dogs of War General painted up with Solland colours, along with a Monstrous Encounters 3D-print wizard. She's Demonology and a redhead, hence the extra purity seals for the General. I'll have to come up with a backstory for my characters... currently wondering about having the Witch Hunter be her older brother and Dad's the general... anyway...

I have some Core!

Test model for my spearman unit:

(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2024/3/9/1188101_sm-Empire%2C%20Solland%2C%20Spearman%2C%20The%20Old%20World%2C%20Warhammer%20Fantasy.JPG) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1188101-Empire%2C%20Solland%2C%20Spearman%2C%20The%20Old%20World%2C%20Warhammer%20Fantasy.html)

This model (and a bunch of others) came second hand and layered in paint with generous amounts of plastic glue. I was planning on running the Spears without shields but there was no saving the shield arm on so many models that I ended up getting some 3rd party heater shields and popping them on. Unfortunately this means I have to up my freehand game to do the Solland emblem on 28 shields.

Was planning a simple wash and highlight but the some of the details on these old models are so shallow I ended up doing it the hard way. Happy with the result, if not the time taken to get there. 27 to go (plus command, but they're nice metal models so yay)

It's a good thing the Empire release is a long time off...

I did up that Dogs of War General as a commander for my Knights of the Golden Lion unit, although he could easily pass as a Solland General too.  I like how yours has been done as well.

The spearman looks great!  It helps to have that thematic looking shield at the same time. :icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::

Loving your colour scheme. Great to see the old puff and slash from 6th ed.

Thank you! It's pretty much lifted from some images of the old 'Uniforms and Heraldry of the Empire' book that I found online.

It's also... taking a long time. I've got the basecoat on most of the spearmen now but doing 'batch painting' like I did with the Greatswords is going to destroy my soul. I've decided I'm going to do them in 2s (apart from the 4s on 25x100 bases) - with all the time it's taking me trying to make the cloth look good, and then trying to get the shields right... spent most of the evening on them today and managed... two.

 :x

Still... unit is 10% finished now. Pass the beer.

That's where I get mine from - just have to go for auctions, rather than Buy It Now insanity, and make sure the speartips are all present. I've had the most luck with buying awfully painted but otherwise intact models and stripping/dismantling/cleaning them and reassembling. "Rescuing" such models is oddly satisfying!

Oh, painting update, I've managed another 11 models. Hoping to make some real headway this evening and tomorrow!

Annoyingly Royal Mail 2nd Class still has my unit champion, but I'm optimistic he'll be here by the time the 3rd edition FAQ rolls around.

They are done! After two marathon painting sessions over the weekend. I can't say I've ever spent this amount of time painting models that are... let's be honest... "not great" quality sculpts...

We are progressing nicely - a pause to build stuff now - I've managed to get hold of some Free Company models in terrible condition, as well as some State Troops and a load of knights that aren't much better - I'm in the process of stripping, cleaning, and figuring out what I can build with them.

In a way, this is all kind of like how a Solland separatist army would be put together... "Who do we have, what do we have, and what can we do with you all to try to make a coherent army?!"

I kinda like the process...

Second Great Cannon and crew done. This is an old metal model that was painted (neatly) with enamel paints. Again, sniped the bidding, waited a week, then stripped and cleaned and drilled out the cannon a bit. I decided to paint it up in the style of the 4th Edition War Machines with the wood painted in the the army colours:

Latest update: Got a couple of small units of State Troops done (probably detachments, but I've not written a list yet so who knows). All of these models were bought cheap off eBay because they were in a right mess - there was no saving some of the detail, hence the black 'jackets' on the many models... a lot of the heads had to be pinned and new necks added with green stuff, and a little bit of bitzbashing to get all the parts together. Quite happy with the result and they should pass the 'view from 4ft away' test!

Yes, I know swordsmen are rubbish in TOW, but it's all I could make with what I have! :D

I love our 6th ed state troop plastic box so much.
If I could ask for anything of TOW, it would be to release these instead of the terrible 7th ed pajama state troops.

I agree completely. Lots of gamers complain about the sculpts of the kits that GW was putting out between '98-2001 but if you ask me, they're great kits as they are so versatile.
What annoyed me the most about the 7th ed state troops kit was that ALL the left arms were in that stupid 'L' pose. It made all the men look like they were doing an interpretive dance

Thank you! :)

I agree too, there's one 7th ed model in that unit and I much prefer the style of the older 6th edition troopers. Even painting them was better because 7th marked the beginning of 'too many fiddly details' it seems!

Yes. I hate all the fiddly details. 7th ed troopers have so many of those. Makes me hate painting them.
I still don’t understand why we can’t have heavily armoured infantry as our standard troops. I prefer painting armour than random decorative bits.

So after a stint of painting archers and crossbowmen created from various rescued state troops and militia parts, I've rewarded myself by painting up two pegasus riders. Likely both going to be used as mundanely-armed Captasus (Captasi) coming in at around 90 points each. Both of these were made from (obviously) Bretonnian pegasus knight mounts for the front legs and wings, with cut up Empire steeds for the armoured hindquarters and heads.

Spent the day doing a test model for my Core Knights. There's a story behind these so indulge me...

I wanted my Core Knights (in TOW with Heavy Armour rather than Full Plate Armour) to look like they had less armour than the Inner Circle. So from my rescued/job lot bits box I collect enough arms and heads to replace the armoured ones from rescued knights lot (they were built as White Wolf). I had the amazing idea of giving them hand weapons and shields to keep them super-cheap and use them as armoured chaff, or a meat-and-metal shield for a wizard, so I built six of them with hand weapons and shield arms.

Cue re-reading the entry and the lances/great weapons option says you have to have one or the other, not an option of either. Bugger. So I needed to either chop them up and start again, or find something suitable for them to have stuck prominently on their backs to indicate either great weapons or lances. About a week later, I found some long-handled hammers in packs of 5. So I bought 10 and upped the unit size, built command models using the last of my arms and the body from the 'general conversion' I'd scored off eBay (his horse is now part-pegasus). I also decided to add some feathers as a 'theme' for the unit. Maybe they specialise in pancaking pegasus knights with their massive hammers, I'm not sure yet!

So here's the test:

(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2024/4/21/1190665_sm-Core%2C%20Empire%2C%20Great%20Weapon%2C%20Knights%2C%20Solland%2C%20The%20Old%20World%2C%20Warhammer%20Fantasy.jpg) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1190665-Core%2C%20Empire%2C%20Great%20Weapon%2C%20Knights%2C%20Solland%2C%20The%20Old%20World%2C%20Warhammer%20Fantasy.html)

Expecting this unit of 10 to take a couple of weeks to paint, which is good because once these guys and the IC knights are done, I'm out of models again...

That's a great question. The handle is REALLY long which does make it look balanced - it's attached to the shoulder, saddle, and leg!

Thanks! It's tempting because our knights are fairly cheap and I don't have a STank or big unit of Flagellants (yet..?)

Army shoot is a great idea. I've not had them all out at the same time yet so it'll be interesting when I do... I've got an orange paint now so I need to go back and highlight most of my reds again. Also want to varnish everything before I venture out onto the battlefield...
