cavalry Empire army

would a empire army with, a war alter , lots of cavalry, 3 lots of Pistoliers,
all heroes mounted work? doesn't need to be a great tournament, just win a few games.

Yes, it would. Knights are core choices. You might be sacrificing otherstuffs, like cannons. Galloper guns might help with that............ (meh, brain fart, I'm going to bed :unsure:)

That is honestly one of my Empire armies. I recently dropped the War Altar for a GM, but it hits hard. The only armies I have issues with are Undead and Daemons. Even Dwarves will fall under a good charge, as long as it is supported. And the pisoliers can help pull units you don't want to fight in a different direction, sometimes.

And like you said, it is not a tournament list. It is fun though.

Could a cav army not be good in tournaments as well as it would be surprising to see instead of the usual army lists that appear in tournaments.

I think that it all depends on the general at that point (if I understand your question). You are fighting a losing battle against Undead and Daemons, which are most likely to be prevalent in a tournament.
