Syphon's blog! Part 37: Arches and towers
« on: January 27, 2021, 06:36:11 PM »
I still can't paint and I still can't take pictures. Still, my work was requested. You can blame someone else for this one, folks.

These days I'm building and collecting Frostgrave stuff, which is a lot like Mordheim. It's a game written by Joseph A. McCullough, alongside its sibling Frostgrave: Ghost Archipelago (set in the same world) and its cousin, the upcoming Stargrave.

My FG collection is roughly divisible in three parts:
Undead, Cult, and sundry.

I haven't figured out Flicker yet so instead of posting the wrong stuff here, have a link to the entire thing:

Keep practising ...  :-P ... it's never too late.

Unfortunately, the link doesn't work for me. Would love to see your work.  :::cheers:::

So you're making three Frostgrave warbands?

Thanks, all.

So you're making three Frostgrave warbands?

Not quite. The Cult will have one of every type of henchman, just in case I ever want to play.
The sundry gang is just either "normal" henchmen of all types, or whatever cool stuff I find lying around.
Lastly, the undead are just a fun thing that I mix and match out of, well, also out of whatever cool stuff I find lying around.

Here's a few pictures of the slave armies of Bael Turath. A few slaves plus one tiefling overseer. Boy, Flickr is a lot less userfriendly than Photobucket ever was.

I painted the overseer. Haven't based him yet as I didn't know what to do with him. A few glaring mistakes but...meh.

I'm trying to use Google photo's for uploading them. Not that easy as Photobucket, but it works. And an other option I'm pondering about is Instagram, like all the hip people?

The boss looks good :-) And I notice that you have a lot of paints standing on your workbench, do you always find the right one?

Thanks :)

I'll never use instagram. It just rubs me the wrong way.

And yeah, I have a general idea of where the paint I need will be.
Most of them are ancient, though. We're talking 2 generations of paint ranges old.

An idea formed! While I looked up a quote from the Liber Chaotica, I found another piece of text that really tickled my fancy. I saved it in a document so it must have done so before.
Quote
The northern border of the Troll Country, on the edge of the Chaos Wastes, is patrolled by the remnants of the doomed army of Count Boris Fenring. These undead Kislevites are said to war unendingly with the forces of Chaos, holding them back from the land they one called home.

I know it's probably a hugely involved project but hey, I'd like to try it. I am scouring the interwebs for models that could stand in as Kislevites (mainly because I imagine actual Kislevite models are going to be expensive and I am not confident enough to try and hack up metal models. Still, I've found some hints at Kislev models for the new Fantasy game so that might be worth keeping an eye on. If that fails, though, I might just get some Frostgrave barbarians and mix their parts with undead parts. But we'll wait and see.

On the Bael Turath army there is no progress, as I spent my hobby time painting actual paintings. I finished two paintings and am working on a third which is vastly more involved than the first two.

Maybe they're not the modern Kislevites, but ones buried centuries ago. In that case, you could go for Vikings or medieval Russians. IIRC, the original Kislevites in 3rd ed were depicted as Barbarians/Vikings, using the then current Citadel Barbarians/Vikings/Fighters range. There are inexpensive plastic kits for 28mm Vikings and medieval Russians.

What range would you recommend? I'm looking at Fireforge's medieval Russians and they are too armoured for their tastes. Gripping Beast has Smerds, whatever they are, but they are metal. Perhaps I will wait to see if they do make plastic Kislevites over in Nottingham.

Gray Army Painter primer. I feel that white doesn't cover well enough while black obscures details for my shitty eyes.

So here's a pikeman I painted up as a test case. I wrote down the recipe so I can recreate the scheme in the others, but I wonder if I should add anything. Thoughts?

i would add a wash to the skin and red to clean the edges and give some nice shading. using reiksgard flesh shade on the flesh and nuln on the red should suffice

that seems more like a spear than a pike, needs to be a lot longer

You are quite right. I have no idea why I said it was a pikeman. Which edges do you mean?

spearman test 3 by Syphon Can't Do Anything, on Flickr

Okay, so I did some touching up on the spearman. Readded colour to the red and washed the helmet and the face. Thoughts?

That does look like an improvement. :::cheers::: :eusa_clap:

Consider black washing the spear tip, maybe the padded armor as well, the idea being get the black wash to help define the recessed areas better, and on the spear tip give an opportunity to define the edges of where the bolts are, and where the spear tip meets the wood.

I'd do something with the strap and the belt, maybe a darker brown or a lighter brown, it seems like they don't contrast enough with the rest of the figure.  Although a full washing of the padded armor might help with this as well.

By the way, a wash can sometimes be tricky to deal with.  Shake it up just like any other paint.  However, a person can start out with it lightly, and always put on more to darken.  And when it puddles in spots you might not want it to, especially on flat areas, then use the brush to seep and pick some of it  up off the model, or guide it where you want to have it flow.
