Title: ✠ [Army Blog] The Grand Order of the Reiksguard: 2018 - Imperial Herald(s)

(The Reiksguard - The Army of the Emperor)

The Grand Order of the Reiksguard is the most famous and powerful order in the Empire. The knights of this order swear to protect the Emperor at all costs. Founded during the reign of Wilhelm, the first Emperor in the line of the princes of Altdorf, the Reiksguard is recruited from the oldest sons of the Empire's nobility. Unlike other knightly orders, the Reiksguard is divided into warriors who fight on foot and on horseback. Regardless of how they fight, the knights' weapons are of the highest quality and their armour is polished to a mirror-like finish and topped with crests that carry the colours of reigning Emperor Karl Franz. The Reiksguard Knights are the Emperor's best troops and as such form the core of his household guard. Additionally, the Reiksguard also recruits the best troops from Reikland, which makes this knightly order a small elite army, that secures the Emperors power within the Empire.

What can you expect to see here:

Without further ado I will present you some of the first (pretty much) finished miniatures:

Love the conversions. I miss the old Reiksguard on foot models.  Now if I could just find the old Marauder Imperial Pegasus mini to replace the one that I lost....

No, the old Reiksguard models had a mix of weapons -- some had two handed swords, some had flails, and some had sword and shield.

Dont forget the old command model with sword and pistol. I recently found my old empire army, I have a regiment of reiksguard, They are becoming a swordsmen unit. I dont have enough of the two handed swords for a greatswords unit. But they are great models, Im glad i rediscovered them.

If you want to add to the two handed sword ones, I find these figures from front rank go very well with them (size, pose and armour style). Do a couple headswaps with heads from plastic sets for more variety, and you could bulk them out to a full unit (at least, that's what I plan to do). If you have the greenstuff skills you can further embellish them with sashes, etc...

Not the best looking minis in the world, but they will do fine in the rear ranks.

A very beautiful set of knights on foot. Is your entire army going to be knights on foot out of curiosity. I look forward to painting my own rieksguard now after the inspiration of the wonderful job you have done. Looking forward to checking back as you add more.

For the curious: I only have a regiment of 24 models of the old Reiksguard on foot. I hope to incorporate all of my empire mini collection into this project. This is what I have:

I will show a new photo tomorrow.

I have already mentioned, that I have quite alot of Knights. Although this project is about the Reiksguard, not all of the Knight units will be of the same Order. I have started to work on my Knights Panther.

Tell me the truth, that banner is printed out and not painted? It just looks too crisp to be painted. No offense intended if it is painted.

I like this Knight and the Praeceptor quite a bit though.

The picture on the Banner is from the 5th edition empire book - I have scanned it and coloured it in photoshop. After printing it out, I have painted over most areas, to get a better colour intensity and to match the colours (especially the blue).

HOWWWWW!?  Victor I love it but how did you get the chevrons on their shields so perfect?  I painted my 20BBs for a tournament last year and spent hours trying to make some method/template/stencil to get all the shields uniform.  I finally gave up and ripped all the shields off then placed them next to each other- you know eyeballed it, and they came out ... nice  :| ... but yours are perfect!

They look awesome! How did you manage the banner?

I have put the banner together in Photoshop with a Logo of small german city, that I found on google - Printed it out on normal paper and painted over most areas.

HOWWWWW!?  Victor I love it but how did you get the chevrons on their shields so perfect?

Short answer: I am perfect.  :-D I didn't do anything special tbh.

Title: Re: [Army Blog] The Grand Order of the Reiksguard - updated 13th Aug.: Castlegate
Post by: Victor on August 13, 2010, 04:08:18 PM
The name of my old army blog was named 'The army of Castle Reikguard'. I had a reason to name it like that, as I always wanted to build a castle or a part of it at least. I have started 2 years ago already, stopped inbetween and now I want to continue. However I am very slow, so this is all I have for now:

WIP castlegate:

A close up of the door:

As you might notice, it is quite big (42cm!). On the picture nothing was glued together yet ... as I said .. still WIP. Expect the next update in 2 weeks or so, when I'm done with my uni work.

I´m in the middle of a similar project, and you have convinced me that my scale is too little...by the way, can teach us something about the building method?

Truly impressive!!  :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:

I´m in the middle of a similar project, and you have convinced me that my scale is too little...by the way, can teach us something about the building method?

Thanks.

Maybe my scale is too big  - the problem is ofcourse that I have to stick to that scale now, which probably means a 1m tall keep/donjon, but right now I have enough work with that piece already.

About the construction: It is important to find the right material. In my case it is some isolation foam that normally goes between a wall and wallpaper. It comes it big sheets, but is only 6mm thick, which means you need some kind of construction undearneath (wood, cardboard, other foam). There are ofcourse other isolation foams , which are way thicker and come in colours like blue and pink - but not all of them are that good to work with. The stone stucture is done by 'drawing' and pressing a pencil into the foam - not too much and not too little. PVA glue to put the thing together.

At the moment I am working on a bigger machicolation (?) the door and a drawbridge. After that a portcullis will follow - the full program basically.
I have painted some hard to reach parts of the gate area already and it looks quite good I have to say  :-D. As I said: 1-2 weeks till the next update.

-Victor.

Now, it looks good without, but if you should want a rougher texture to the stone, I've heard you can get that from pressing a real rock into the foam.

A small update:

I'm still unsure what to do with the area above the machicolation.

The top level got a new floor and I'm working on a guardrail as well.

I have also added even more structure to the stonewalls, but this will only show, when I paint it.

I finished this empire Hero today, who will be the Captain or 'Sigmarpriest' for my (Riccos Republican Guard) Spearmen unit. The conversion is based on a Lukas Braganza mini, which can be seen on page 1 of this thread.

Oh yeah, it looks like Braganza (sp), the old metal unit champion arm for 6th edition handgunners, and a new greatsword head. It looks fantastic. The best part is that I own all these bits and can blatantly steal your design. Keep up the good work!

I don't see those problems to be honest but thanks anyway. The paint is definitely not too thick.

I have finally decided how I wanted to front to look and here is the result:

This is an old "memorial medal/coin" from 1890(!) from some kind of exhibition, which shows the coat of arms of Emperor Franz Josef I. of Austria. I liked that CoA and so I had the idea to use it as decoration.

This is my entry to the March painting contest. I did nothing fancy here - it's just a standard Greatsword for my next unit. The seasoned empire collector will recognize 2 little conversions on the mini though.

I really love this blog. Gives a great impression of your army and the overall really good painting quality. The mini with these small conversions looks almost like the original. I had to pick up the model to see what it was. The head I had guessed but the moustache is quite interesting and small touch that looks like it should be there. It also changed the 'babyface' of the orginal model into a seasoned warrior.

The heraldic motif is from the 5.Edition empire book. I scanned the picture, coloured it in Photoshop and put together the banner. Then I printed it on normal paper and painted over most areas. Same procedure for the crossbowmen's banner and the pennants on the lances of the knights.

Agree with many comments ....have found this very inspirational.

I had forgot all about the Dogs of War models.

Besiegers and republican guard is going on the shopping list.

I´m trying to find some dismounted knight type models like the foot knight reiksguard you have there.

Wish they would bring them back into production.

But I digress.......

Superb job.

Love all of it.

First off, a small unit filler:

Another WIP shot - a priest of the knightly order

Prior Rochus Marwaldt - Sanctioned warrior priest of Sigmar and the Prior of the monastery in Castle Reiksguard.

Thanks! The stone patterns on the bases are done with greenstuff, as can be seen on some WIP pictures. The 'tree leaves' are some parts from birch tree seeds, that I have coloured abit.

Like your work, really clean painting do thumbs up on that.  with your banners which you glue on do you have any problems getting the paper to lay on the banner cleanly ? I tried recently to do the same on a plastic state troop banner but it sat on it really awkward and wouldn't smooth out and looked sh**e

The mixing of models from different editions works great. Your conversions are very nice as well.
I absolutely love the combination of cobblestone bases with the fallen leaves. Had never seen that before.
I'm also a big fan of the names you created for your characters. It adds that little extra personal touch.

Also, the way you've decided to apply the colors really makes for an impressive Reiksguard. Before I had seen yours, I would've never thought of 'halving' their shields (in fear it'd look to much like Talabheim) but you really pulled off the look and its very original.

I'm really looking forwar to seeing more of your creations. I hope we will get to see Kurt Helborg and maybe even the Emperor himself. You have any plans for 'reiksguarding' the Steam Tank? Can't wait for your take on Riccos Republican Guard, Reiksguard knight units and the Pistoliers.
Overall, great plog. Truly worthy of our Emperors personal army. Keep up the good work!

After 5 years I'm finally calling my reiksguard foot knight unit finished. I guess all in all it took me more than 250 hours of work to finish this (I'm that slow, yes). There are things that I'm not fully happy with, but you really have to stop at some point and move on. After all, there are so many minis still waiting for my attention! Without further ado, here is the finsihed unit:

And a close up shot of the general:

PS.: The forum is scaling down the fotos a bit - if you make a right click and go to "view image", you can get a slightly bigger foto, if you want.

I'm a big fan of the foot knights myself too, and you have done an excellent job on them :::cheers:::

I see you used a banner from the GS sprue, but the shaft is prolonged, which is a smart idea, because it doesn't interfere with the fig of the BB, as it would otherwise. I'm curious what sort of material  have you used for the pole? Is it plastic or some metal pin?

Good job man!

I wish I had these models. I do like the older models more than our current 7th edition statetroops and greatswords!

I removed the banner top from the banner pole (original model) and extended the pole with some plastic rod.

These knights are a rather rare sight and can only be seen in project logs of hobby-elders such as Steveb.  :-D No wonder, as these minis are older than many forum members (1989!). I'm really looking forward to convert them to mounted knigths - should be a sight fitting for the Reiksguard.

Those Knights were always much better as mounted rather than foot models, I bet you can find better uses for those standing legs. In my book nothing that came with a slotta-base counts as "old" though  :smile2:

That unit of foot Reiksguard is a work of art, the closest I'll come is to steal the basing theme (stone flags and autumn leaves) for my new Vampire army...

Had one left over pistolier, so I built a standard bearer:

Who remembers the good old days of the 6th edition, when the pistoliers could actually dish out some damage in close combat - I'd love to field them this way:

Is there any specific reason the Pistoliers aren't on your usual paved bases?

Thanks guys!

Is there any specific reason the Pistoliers aren't on your usual paved bases?

Only the Reiksguard on foot and some heroes have some paved bases atm. (It's really tedious as I did all the bases with greenstuff). All the cavalry will be on soil and grass bases. The autumn theme (fallen leaves etc.) and movement trays should tie all the units together visually.

Threadomancy deluxe! I'm back - even though I was never gone. I can't believe it has been almost 3,5 years since I last posted something. I wasn't completely unproductive during all that time, even though I am a very slow painter. It just took me ages (literally years) to do some final touch ups and to take some half decent photos! But now I did it. Here is what I was/am up to:

I also dabble in these paper print out -> glue to banner myself, albeit clumsily. How do you get it to be so seamless? Is the paper pretty much covering the entire banner face? Is it regular thickness paper? I can't tell where the paper ends and the metal starts.

Do yourself a big favour and use a decent ink printer and not a laser printer - the ones I have access to, are bad at printing pictures, so you really have to paint over everything. Cuting the paper into shape is quite tricky. I usally print the banner in question in several sizes as I am never 100% certain how big it needs to be. In the two examples above both paper-banner-cut-outs are pretty much the size of the metal banner. I use regular copy paper and in order to cover up transitions, you can use some layers of paint. I'm not going to lie - the whole thing sounds pretty straight forward, but probably takes longer than painting the thing free hand (if you are able to do so).

So ... as some of you are aware already, photobucket.com is basically not usable anymore and so all my old pictures are currently more or less unavailable. I have started to upload some of them to another host and changed the links, but this is all time consuming and will take me some time.

For those who don't know the old stuff and are curious, you can (probably/maybe) look through my photobucket album for now (I will delete that soon, because the site is a bad joke): http://s928.photobucket.com/user/Victor_86/library/Warhammer?sort=3&page=1

But back on topic!

I have finally found the motivation to paint some of my warmachines (I didn't enjoy it though). These are no masterpieces (especially because I had to do a rescue paint job on 2 of them), but I managed to take some nice photos I think.

Both cannons are plastic models with the metal gun crews from 4th/5th edition of warhammer. As the (inner) barrel diameter of the plastic cannon is too big by default, I have made it a bit smaller with greenstuff which makes the cannon look more massive and realistic I think (the plastic mortar is terrible for the same reason).

Great stuff! and, so glad you are staying the course.

That engineer cracks me up every time I see it. The poor sod on the ground is supposed to keep the gun stable while somebody is stepping on him! a warhammer moment.

Great work - your Greatswords are among the best units out there! Don't let photobucket bring you down, they'll suffer for what they've done

Are the paintings on the standards freehands? The standards looking great!  :eusa_clap:

Edit: Oh, I'm sorry! I read your post about the standards later!

If they are no master pieces, what do your master pieces look like?

If they are no master pieces, what do your master pieces look like?

I will let you know when I finally produce one. If I would invest (even) more time and would use better equipment (and not colours that dried out like 3 years ago etc.), I feel like I could produce better results. I'm never fully satisfied with my work, but there is so much else that requires painting, that I have to say "enough!" after some time and move on.

Title: Re: [Army Blog] The Grand Order of the Reiksguard: 2018 - Greatsword conversions
Post by: Victor on August 12, 2018, 04:27:33 PM
Time for threadomancy once again. Last year has been very rough and spare time was almost non existant. Next year will be just the same, but now and then I get to spend an hour or two on the hobby. As usal I work on 10 things at once which means nothing really gets done, or so it seems. But I have some finished things or close to finished - pictures will follow soon, I hope.

For now I have some WIP pictures: What do you do, when you have 2 big units of greatwords already? That is right - you start a new one! This time I wanted to have a go at the old 4./5. Edition greatswords, which you very rarely see. It will be a smaller unit this time around and I will most likely paint them as Averlanders with the good old Marius Leitdorf on horse in the center with his bodyguards around him.

Sadly there are only 3 Greatword variants (and the one with the wavy blade - the flamberge - isn't that good looking)  and also non of the old captain models fit the unit. To get some variaty for the front rank at least and a proper captain/champion, I did some conversions. I have used 2 pairs of armoured legs from White Knight that fit the miniatures very well. On the following pictures you can see the original models on the left and the right side and the 4 conversions in the middle.

Once painted, these should look pretty cool - or at least that is the plan.

Cool, minimalistic and very finely done conversions!

For variety, I'd focus on a face or two. Hard work, but you (or rather, me) usually recognize the face, and when the same two faces keep alternating on the front rank, the effect of conversion work elswhere isn't that obvious. These models have quite broad faces/foreheads, so maybe a careful thinning and then some GS work on the nose would change the face enough. Perhaps just a repositioning of the feathers would do the trick?

I find the Flammberge pose is nice. If only the sword is a problem, maybe change the sword blade?

None of this is meant as criticism. I think your GS skills are excellent, and you could achieve even more variety.

Thanks for the input Zygmund! I definitely appreciate that. The final decision hasn't been made here regarding the conversions. This will be a rather small unit though with Marius as unit filler in the middle. The front rank will only have 5-6 models in this case and the standard bearer and musician are different models anway, so it shouldn't look too bad either way. (The drummer has already recieved the same  "half armour" or "munition armour" with green stuff to better fit with the other miniatures.)

I find the Flammberge pose is nice. If only the sword is a problem, maybe change the sword blade?

The pose is alright, but the sword is rubbish. Changing the blade is not so easy, but I might do it for one guy for the front rank. But there is plenty of time to think about all that some more (as there will be no time to actually continue any time soon ... sounds paradox).

I have got something special today! Photos first, short explanation afterwards.

Imperial Herald, Baron Gregor von Willersbach

Imperial Pursuivant with the Imperial Banner

Imperial Pursuivant and Guardsman

Imperial Herald with his retinue

The idea for this 'unit' started, when I got the Imperial Herald GW miniature - the one with the banner and trumpet. When looking at Front Rank Miniatures I found quite similar looking heralds in their War of the Roses miniature range and bought them too. After doing some conversion work on the mounted FR herald, I kept him as such and 'demoted' the other two to his assistants - so called pursuivants. Because heralds are not allowed (or meant) to carry arms, I have added a guardsman with a greatsword, who is there to help, should things get ugly. This miniature is also from Front Rank but has recieved a GW head and sword.

Heralds had a variety of duties and where ambassadors of their Lords and the first diplomats. Having such an ambassador of the Emperor join the battlefield together with the Imperial flag would have a positive effect on the army I thought. I never liked the models of the wizard wagons but liked the rules and their buff effect to units around them. So I thought, why not just use the rules and do your own thing. So yes, this will be my first "wizard wagon":

The plan is to have a movement tray with the appropriate size and leave slots for the 4 miniatures and fill up the rest of the space to give a coherent look to the whole thing. I want the miniatures to be removable though. And before someone asks again: the eagles were done again using my little cheat - mostly anyway.

 :smile2:

Superb models, conversions and painting!

Maybe add shadows & highlights to the yellow liveries. Just maybe.

I very much like the idea of using other models & story for the effects of the wizard wagons.

I have one of those heralds on horse with the bugle.  I'm hoping to paint him in some sort of non-province way so he can be used interchangeably.

There are, but very subtle. I only had a dried-out yellow colour pot for painting, which made it all quite difficult.:engel:

Not everything no. I have chosen the colours red/white/black for my Reiksguard troops (not Talabheim!). As the last few pictures show, I'm trying to work in some black & yellow too. The plan is to add some non Reiksguard knightly orders as well, which will have different colour schemes.
