Title: 60 Days of Hobby 2021 to 2022, into 100 Days of Hobby for 2022!
Post by: GamesPoet on December 04, 2021, 03:10:19 PM
So going to cross between the two years in style this time.

From today, Dec 4th 2021, until Ground Hog Day, Feb 2nd 2022 ...

... It's the 60 Days of Hobby Celebration Challenge!

I will do something hobby related for 60 days in a row.  It might be painting, building, gaming, reading, organizing ... anything hobby related.

Have a friend of mine who has his 60th birthday today, and he started me in on this, so off I go.  We have two others interested as well, and although none of those guys does the fantasy and sci-fi route in the hobby, I decided to join in on their fun anyway, and start up a thread here as well for rallying those others who might be interested in joining in with me.

Cheers!  And lets get going!  :icon_biggrin: :icon_mrgreen: :::cheers:::

Starting off with some painting today. :icon_cool:

Day 1:

Did a ton of organizing of French, British, and Russian Napoleonic figures, plus did a bit of painting on some French Chasseurs a Cheval.

A good start! :icon_biggrin: :::cheers:::

You're at 1/60th of the way. Remember, even the greatest journey starts with a single step.

Day 2:

Yesterday it was putting paint on more French Chasseurs, and doing some reading on Russian infantry uniforms during the Napoleonic era.

58 more to go! :icon_lol:

Day 5:

Did some more research on French Light Infantry units, and more reading on the northern flank of the 1812 Russian Campaign.

As a side note, found a sculptor that I might request some specific sculpts for some French, and Russian Napoleonic figures. :icon_mrgreen:

Day 6:  Started learning the computer moderated rules called Carnage & Glory, and set up initial French and Russian lists for a skirmish between a Rear-guard Russian units and Vanguard French units that occurred about 4 miles west of the town of Wilkomir on June 28th, 1812.  Plan to use this scenario as a way to learn how to use the system for future games.

Day 7:

Cleaned and organized more in the hobby room.  Including the game table cleared off, yes!.  Then set up the terrain for a historical scenario for the opening phase of the French's left flank invasion of northern Russia in 1812.

Day 8:

Set up  bases and a few units of infantry to begin playtesting the Napoleonic scenario above and begin using the Carnage and Glory computer moderated rules.  Also cleaned and dumped in soapy water for over night a unit of 16 figures for French Light Infantry, and two artillery pieces with crews and 2 trains of 2 horses each for pulling the cannon.  Continued reading for the 1812 Russia Campaign, too.

Also, sent inquiry into having 2 sets of 4 to 6 figures sculpted for a use as a Napoleonic era unit.

Day 9 & 10:

On Sunday and Monday read game scenarios read from the Perfidious Albion.  This is a brand new publication for the Napoleonic era and focuses on warfare conducted in South Africa, Italy, South America, Pomerania, Denmark, Portugal and Spain by the British or their allies from 1806 to 1809.  The history of situations is more fascinating than I expected, and provide interesting opportunities for gaming.

Day 11:

Glued two 8lb French Napoleonic cannons together.  No, not life sized ones, 28mm. :icon_wink: :icon_lol:

Also, was eyeing my cleaned, washed, and primed Persian cavalry, and so read some history on the Persian military for colors of clothing.

Day 12 ...

Doing a 16 figure unit of Dutch in French service.  Got out my Victrix French, popped off 11 bodies so far for an officer, drummer, standard bearer (not sure yet which body to use for a sapper), 4 bodies for regulars, and 4 bodies for lights.  Eventually 4 more for grenadiers.  Took a bare head, and cut off the top to glue a hat on it for the sapper.  Glued some arms for the voltigeurs.  More creating and construction seems to be on tap for Day 13.
Title: Re: 60 Days of Hobby Celebration 2021 to 2022!
Post by: GamesPoet on December 17, 2021, 01:52:58 PM
Day 13 ... More gluing of arms to bodies, and doing some figure cleanup along the way.
Title: Re: 60 Days of Hobby Celebration 2021 to 2022!

Day 14: Finished reading my material on the north flank of Russian Campaign.

Did that situation deteriorate rapidly or what?  From the reading it seems as if there were signs early on that the situation wasn't healthy, but wow.  In November, if the cold or disease didn't get too many of them, then the Cossacks eventually did.  There's a couple of battles that were still northern flank oriented around the middle of the month, and two of Napoleon's  Marshals can't agree on a plan from there, but then in two weeks time, there's not much left to be counted.  A complete disaster, and that's only from the point of reading about this northern flank of the campaign.  History knows this one didn't end well for the French and their allies with the rest of it either.

If you are interested in the Napoleonic wars but enjoy fantasy too, I think you should read Naomi Novik's Temeraire series. Book 8 is about Napoleon's Russian campaign, for instance.

Ok, will look it up, thanks for the recommendation! :::cheers:::

Day 15: More work on the Victrix French figures in making a unit of Dutch.  They've needed more flash cleaning than I recall from the last time I made some of these.  5 figures complete, 4 only need heads, while drummer, standard bearer, and sapper need an arm and head, and the 4 grenadiers need the most with their bodies picked, and one with an 2 arms and another with an arm.  So progress has been made, and hopefully today will see them complete for shipping tomorrow.

Day 16:

Got the rest of the gluing, flash and mold line cleaning done on the 16 Dutch made from French Victrix figures.

Will box them up and ship them out for painting on Monday.

Day 17:

Found I had to glue some swords and bayonets on to the Dutch unit so delayed shipping to let those set over night.

Did some reading of a book called "Fields of Battle: Retracing Ancient Battlefields" by Richard Evans.  It reviews various ancient fights by considering things like the logistics, terrain, weather, and walking the ground with what little has been recorded and written about them.  These get merged into a collective narrative with explanations of how he arises at his conclusions.  So it is a bit speculative in places, except getting deeper at the reason for why things were written as they were causes one to have a different view and understanding of what could have been happening when placed in more of a context than just the limited written record.

I also opened up Michael Hopper's scenario book on the 1805 Napoleonic campaign, this one culminated in the battle of Austerlitz.  An interesting read so far, one where napoleon let his Marshal and lesser general's do much of the smaller battles, while he focused on the larger picture, and was able to get his army in a spot where he defeated a much larger combined army of Austrians and Russians in a situation that one might not have imagined would be possible.

Austerlitz was my first reading about a Napoleonic battle when I was much younger, and it helped set me on the road of learning the history of those times.  There always seems to be more, for it has massive amounts of detail that can be studied on and on, and about warfare that was waged over a good bit of time from the French Revolution to it's end in 1815.

Finally got gluing those 4 sets of swords and bayonets to the 4 Dutch grenadiers.  Also continued reading the scenario book on the 1805 campaign.

Day 19:

Wrapped lots of Christmas presents.  Wait ... that's not not hobby, although some of them were hobby related.

Hmmm. :icon_mrgreen: :engel:

Well, ok, onward ... finished the remainder of the scenario book on the 1805 campaign.  Going to bring the rest of those along on my trip to Wisconsin for the holidays top keep this string going, and so plenty of interesting and fun reading.  However, I will also be gaming and painting. :icon_cool: :::cheers:::

I'm very new to the fighting that occurred there.  The scenarios do have me curious.  But, it's Christmas, so will have to follow up after I get through my vacation.  :::cheers:::

Day 21: ... Sorted through a bunch of medieval miniatures I got recently to give a gift of a bunch to a nephew for Xmas.  It was quite the chore after they had all gotten jumbled together in the car ride ... lol.  Thankfully no damage!  But try doing that on Xmas eve, definitely wasn't fun.

With only a quick look, so take this with a grain of salt, seems it was an attempt by a British guy to at first get the British government to help support his taking over of Buenos Aires for economic reasons, but the Brit Govt initially said no.  So he got some support from a British/South African guy to lend him troops instead.  It got to be such a mess that the British Government finally sent in some more troops to save face.  That didn't succeed in taking Buenos Aires from the citizens, militia, some Spanish troops, and the guy leading the forces got court martialed back in England after the fighting ended.

Day 22: ... Christmas ... two board games. :icon_biggrin:

Day 23: ...  two more board games and showed a niece and nephew what needed to be done for them to clean mold lines, and glue figures, and then we dinked them in soapy water for cleaning.  Next step will be priming today.  Then painting tomorrow.  And then a military miniatures game using Lion Rampant. :icon_cool:

So far the holiday in Wisconsin is going good! :::cheers:::

Day 36: More reading the "Rise of Albion" scenario book, continued reading "The Viking Wars", and reorganized all my medieval figures.  Might reorganize them further because I'm still not liking how it has been done at the moment.  Typically they are set up in Lion Rampant units, except the whole collection is still bugging me, and not sure how this will end currently.

Well ... I had two days in a row that I missed on Dec 30th and Dec 31st, so I will be adding two more days.

I am contemplating going 100 Days again from Jan 1st when I restarted and forward from there, and that makes 31 days for that so far.

But I am just contemplating currently.

Meanwhile ...

Day 58: Started reading the next napoleonic scenario book in the series, Roads to Vienna, and went through the first 10 scenarios.

Day 59: Finished reading the napoleonic scenario book, "Roads to Vienna", and surprised at how quickly I read that one.  Maybe less scenarios in it compared to some of the others, although it was still very good.
Title: Re: 60 Days of Hobby Celebration 2021 to 2022!

Day 60: Started reading my current last of 6 napoleonic scenario books, "Blood Along The Danube" which will close out the 1809 Campaign.

Also, because I missed doing anything on Dec 30th and Dec 31st when traveling, going to do at least two more days to make up for those, and this will tally to 60 in 62 days.

Still considering the idea of continuing beyond that and turning the first 100 days of 2022 into 100 Days of Hobby as well.

Day 61: Started painting flesh on the French Chasseur bugler I'd bungled previously.  However, it was the wrong shade.  Ended up not using the rest of the watered down paint on my palette, but rallied with the correct flesh tone being put on the 5 new 40mm Brit grens.  Then I finished up with the touchups planned for the Chasseurs.

Day 62 of 64 & Day 37 for 2022: Got in my first miniature game of the year ... D-Day To Berlin rules, using a scenario from an upcoming publication called Bagration to Berlin ... 3 Russian infantry divisions attempt push beyond multiple river crossings, but they face tough German armor division.  I played the Germans, and managed to hold them off.

Day 63 of 65 & Day 38 for 2022: Reading some more of the Napoleonic scenario book "Blood Along The Danube", and this time it was all the scenarios in it regarding the battle of Wagram.  Hadn't really read much on that, and it seems like there was quite a bit to it.

When I was a youngster in grammar school, I developed an interest in reading about military history.  I had books that had military miniatures in them as well.  My father wasn't interested in eras like the Napoleonic nor Franco Prussian War.  But I was able to find books on the first, although not the latter.  I also could find napoleonic figures, yet really didn't have the resources of time, energy, nor money to get into the era as I'd prefer, and so I only dreamt of having napoleonic armies.  Fast forward to the last couple of years, and I began to move in the direction having some napoleonic armies for table top gaming, especially when I found a painter to help get me going.  I have been paying for infantry units to and foot artillery to be completed, while I work on cavalry and horse artillery units.  The idea is to have enough units for playing Lasalle 2nd edition with a friend (he is making a British army to go against my French), and I also want to start having Carnage & Glory games GMed by me at historical game conventions.

Flemish scored 14 points, Italians scored 4, so definitely a decisive win for the nephew.

- - -

As an aside ...

Got a good bit of work on these in front of me.  Need to speed paint two crossbow units, one for the Norman army, one Genovese for the French, and 4 Italian knights to fill out a unit.  Plus there are various spearsmen, and maybe some halberdiers that also need to be done to fill out some foot sergeant units.  Then there is the basing and rebasing, and painting updates that all need some time and effort.

When I got home, re-primed the Norman crossbowmen, glued some of the Talus mix to 3 Flemish cav and 3 French cav, painted some touch up flesh on 2 of the cav, yellow on a Italian bannerman on horse, plus lined up 10 Genovese crossbowmen on their bases for painting and gluing.

Day 124 of 126 & Day 99 for 2022: Played in a wonderfully joyous game of Lion Rampant with friends.  These are the days that do not try men's lives.  They enhance life in a way that is understandable if you've got a hobby that allows for the socialness possible with good people.

I also got in a wee bit of painting.

Wasn't sure I was going to make it today.  Had an allergy attack and was down and out for most of the day.  Got trhough it and painted some bolt gun on chain mail shirts, and a few crossbows as well ... Day 125 of 127 & Day 100 for 2022.  Probably not the best way to celebrate 100 days in a row, but got it in, and have decided I'm going to see how long I can keep this run alive.

Cheers! :icon_biggrin: :icon_cool:

Day 134 of 136 & Day 109 for 2022: I had recently gotten a copy of the third volume in a series on the Italian Wars by Predonzani and Alberici. transalted by Tiso.  However, before reading it, went back to the 2nd volume because I recalled having read though the the parts on the battles of Agnadello, Ravenna, and Marignano, yet new I had some chapters at the end that I hadn't read yet.  The next chapters covered the casualties at Marignano, a discussion of the different armies' heraldry, and I also read the chapter on the French army, with Venetian, Spanish, Swiss, Landsknechts, Naples, and a few smaller groups to read next.  Lots of good info, pictures, and plates for miniature enthusiasts!

Day 139 of 141 & Day 114 for 2022: Medium brown on 1 more horse, and both red and white touch ups on the comparisons of two horses as well.

Also spent some time creating a list of hills/ridges that need to be made for the Lasalle scenarios in the rule book, as well as the wooded areas, too.  These projects will likely begin next weekend or the next.

Day 141 of 143 & Day 116 for 2022:

Upgraded painting on 18 archers and a bit more to go.

Based 6 of those archers to use as Bidowers with Gamers Grass dense beige tufts (probably 6mm), and Geek Gaming Scenics arid grasslands.

On remaining 12 archers used Vallejo Scenery dense green 6mm tufts, and will add white flowers, perhaps a GGS mix too.

Started adding white flowers and tufts to a unit of 12 Norman spearmen, yet more to go.

Also, primed a unit of Russian napoleonic Hussars, and a ton of Boxers with some U.S.A. troops from same era, and a bunch of Ancients era Greeks and Macedonians.

Struggled with work crud today, very tired, and it is always not easy to hobby with little energy for creativity.

Day 149 of 151 & Day 124 for 2022: Hunted through figure for a couple more crossbowmen to add to a unit, since my recent order isn't expected for 14 to 20 days, and not in time for a upcoming convention.  When I found some that look close to the figures I am using for Genovese dudes, I cleaned them up with removing mold lines and then dunking them in soap water.  Also found a figure to use for a 12th spearmen for a unit of spearmen, maybe their commander, and cleaned him up, too.

This is going to be a significant hobby day.  Everything I get done today leaves more time for Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

Oh, did I mention that it's vacation time? Well it is! :icon_cool: :::cheers:::

Day 153 of 155 & Day 128 for 2022: Glued lances into 2 knight's hands, crossbows into 2 crossbowman's hands, and an ax into a spearmen unit's leader's hand.

Got tons of painting done yesterday across the scope of all the figures needed for the upcoming convention next week! :icon_biggrin:

Plus I cut and spread for making 4 more hills, one of which is a multi level hill for an eventual medieval scenario between Spanish vs. French in Sicily.  The other three are for a wintry table planned for Lion Rampant and other things as as well.  Also planned out 5 more hills beyond that.

Day 160 of 162 & Day 135 for 2022: 1 game of Swordpoint and 1 game of Carnage & Glory.

The game of Swordpoint (by Gripping Beast) was also had some elements of Saga and Fields of Glory grafted on to it.  However, it was probably my favorite game of the convention.  This was done by a good friend of mine out of Bangor ME that I hadn't seen in 3 years, and a good number of the figures were painted by another friend of  mine that I hadn't seen in that long either.  A battle between Byzantines vs. Sassanids.  Carnage & Glory scenario was of Guilford Courthouse.  The British mostly charged up the center, and we attacked the flanks to do enough damage and obtain a pyrrhic victory.

Day 161 of 163 & Day 136 for 2022: 1 game of Lion Rampant, and a board game by GMT called Tank Duel.

For the whole convention ... way too much fun for anyone to have in 4 days ... lol.

My Lion Rampant scenario on Thursday night and Sunday morning for the Battle of Civitate both went very well.  Especially with the new rule I gave for Pope Leo IX to be used for providing his leadership value to anyone with in 12 inches of his unit unless already having been activated by one of the other leaders.  Italians won on Thursday night, Normans on Sunday morning.

Day 169 of 171 & Day 144 for 2022: Touched up some flesh on the Genovese crossbowmen along with a little bit of red and green in places.

Also began researching the battle of Crecy ...

Turns out that there are some folks that are currently thinking the fight did not occur north east of Crecy, but instead to the south west of Crecy near Crecy Woods.  This seems to fit the descriptions of the battle better, and there are hopes for some one to do some battlefield archaeology to determine if their theory is correct or not.  No artifacts have been found at where the battle has been traditionally said to have been.

Day 170 of 172 & Day 145 for 2022: Flesh wash on the 12 Genovese crossbowmen.

Day 171 of 173 & Day 146 for 2022: Gave a go to using a lighter flesh color on top of a wash and a darker flesh color, and it was too much of a contrast for my liking.  The darker flesh color and the wash was enough, and I could have used the same flesh color, which is my usual method.

Also, put a second layer of AK's water product on to a scenery piece to get it to level out a bit.  Hopefully after drying for 24 hours, there will be a slight improvement over only one layer.

Day 175 of 177 & Day 149 for 2022: Did some research on John Hawkwood and the White Company.  Also cleaned 9 new English archers that a friend of mine 3D printed for me, and then I primed them.  Have another that I need to do a little fixing of the top half of his bow, and he is printing 2 more to complete a unit of 12.  These dudes will be my first unit for a Lion Rampant Free Company army, and they will all get a shiny armor look or a white surcoat or gray/off white padded armor for Hawkwood's mercenaries.   I'm also going to use his black and white heraldry as a badge on at least some of the figures as well.

Day 176 of 178 & Day 150 for 2022: Used some Armageddon Dunes to mound up a inch and half diameter base.  Placed two flat topped rocks to one side,  and a boulder in the middle of the base.  Then placed a commander of an archer unit with both feet on two of the flat rocks, sending a two fingered message to the enemy while one of his men stands off to other side pulling an arrow from the ground in preparation to use it.

Day 177 of 179 & Day 151 for 2022: Started painting a marsh scenery piece, working it off of the green primer previously used, using a lighter and yellower green for the first coat to be under and at the edge of the water areas, and then used a darker green to highlight some higher ground areas.

Day 178 of 180 & Day 152 for 2022: Painted a watery "stegadon scale green" in the center of the water areas to give a darker color to the deeper areas.

Same date as above ... continued with a medium gray on the rocks of the marsh scenery piece, painted first coat of flesh on 12 archer's for my representation of Hawkwood's White Company.

Day 180 of 182 & Day 154 for 2022: Picked out one figure from the intended as Hawkwood archers, and painted first color of gray on his padded armor, followed by a cream colored over brush of the high points, which is not really a dry brush, but instead a thicker coat.  This has left the recesses in the medium gray.  I'm contemplating doing this to his other clothing, and then use a different color on top of those as a way of doing color and a highlight in one stroke of the brush.

I did do the latter on a pouch and the over hood of his head, to see how that'd turn out, and might try this for the scabbard, maybe even the helmet.

Motivation seemed low today, not sure what that is all about, maybe just tiredness form the gardening this past weekend.

Day 183 of 185 & Day 157 for 2022: Painted first flesh coat on 4 more archers, glued rocks to the archer bases to represent being in a boulder field, and glued a bow back together.

Ha!  Had an easier time with motivation this morning, after a good night's sleep.

Day 184 of 186 & Day 158 for 2022: Painted some dull red onto one archer that I am experimenting with a paint scheme upon.  Also did a mid to dark gray on all helmets, pommels, ends of the scabbards, and arrow heads for the group of 12 archers.

Thanks dude!

It's hard to believe I've kept this up for as long as I have, and since January 1st.  It's already June and I am rarely having an issue getting something in for the hobby.  It doesn't feel much like it is on automatic pilot, although I've had that feeling emerge in the background once or twice.

Day 187 of 189 & Day 161 for 2022: Painted some more clothing on a unit of archers, but more to go.

More gardening today!  But I don't count that ... lol.  It's a hobby, and it produces yummy food, too!

Day 189 of 191 & Day 163 for 2022: More tufts added to the marsh scenery piece, and several sets of reeds as well.  It's probably ready for water effects being poured at some point next.

Very tired ...

Day 190 of 192 & Day 164 for 2022: Painted more of padded armor on 12 archers, but it just wasn't working for me.

Stopped stresing myself out, and decided to call it a night ... it's Monday.

Noticing a subtle slow down these last few days.  It's like I can do a little bit, with no immediate motivation, while finding the need to only do that with a level of being able to only do so much, seems to be mostly due to tiredness.

Day 191 of 193 & Day 165 for 2022: Painted dark gray on inner folds on one archer, and the rest of the paint went to painting a mule.

Awake early this morning after turning in early, and the rest as done me good, not surprising.

Day 192 of 194 & Day 166 for 2022: Painted all leggings on the archers in a light gray, did a few more tunics in a deep red, finished initial coat of cream on the rest of the padded armor, and painted all bows in a wood handle color.  Lots more to do, yet plenty of progress this morning.

Day 203 of 205 & Day 177 for 2022: Put flesh wash on faces and hands of 12 free company archers for Hawkwood's white company, and then also used the same wash on the rocks glued to the bases.  The latter item looks way better!

Day 204 of 206 & Day 178 for 2022: Used a dark to medium blue on some archers' clothing, and then some military brown color as well.  Also used the blue on a figure from Footsore Miniatures for an early 13th century French King's cloak.

Day 207 of 209 & Day 181 for 2022: Took a detour away from my various projects to organize an army of medieval figures for a game on Saturday ...

2 Knight units
2 light cav units
1 heavy crossbow unit
2 other crossbow units
1 skirmishing bow unit
1 heavy spear unit
2 other spear units
1 light spear unit

Also did some painting of hats, helmets, and boots on one of the crossbow units, and then based them up with some quick drying glue, sand and fine gravel. Will probably do some more of this kind of stuff in the morning.
