First Mordheim Game - List needed
« on: March 02, 2009, 02:47:44 PM »
Next Friday I'm playing my very first real Mordheim game.

I need a 500 Gc list, and am playing Reiklanders.

The game will be between 6 players

All suggestions, tips, tricks, strategies, etc. are welcome.

Reiklanders are a good band, so you're off to a good start.

Max out on characters as they will benefit you the most along the way in a campaign.  That's really about all I know as my experience is limited.
Me and Wissenlander had babies!

not together.

finding photographic evidense that Wiss smiles is going to be hard...

Been told many a time that max shooting wins.

Also sounds incredibly boring doing that.
I thought he should act responsibly and just kill himself.

yay reiklanders. same warband i play.

heres one of a few you could try soth.

my current is:

captain
mace/mace
bow

2x champion
mace/mace on one, mace/dagger other
bow

2x youngblood
mace/dagger

HENCHMEN

4x marksman
mace/dagger
bow

3x swordsmen
sword/dagger

The above warband gives you more before routing, 2 sets of archer sniping to control lanes and two sets of 4 melee people. this gives you a decent chance to take hits with youngbloods or swordsmen and have heroes protected. or you can work with two groups of 3 and 1 melee guarding each of the two sets of marksmen.

another more random but giggleworthy warband could be:

captain
mace/mace
bow

2x champion
mace/dagger
bow

2x youngblood
mace/dagger

HENCHMEN

4x marksmen
mace/dagger
blunderbuss / longbow

move and fire as you approach the enemy, and if they try to bunch up you fire the blunderbusses taking hopefully one guy down a time. also means you can criple a few hopefully befor emelee starts and rout them easier.

up to you though.

Max on heroes, take lots of sharpshooters, do not bother with armour, except maybe helmets for your captain or champions.

I'd suggest (without calculating):

Captain, mace, longbow and mace or sword
champion mace+ mace or sword
champion mace+ mace or sword
youngblood mace (+mace)
youngblood mace (+mace)

3 Sharpshooters, longbow, mace
2 sharpshooters, longbow, mace

I do not know if this fits into 500 gold, but it is a very hard list (maces are so cheap and dual-wielding is sadly the way to go in mordheim).
If it is over 500 take away one shooter from the bigger unit.
Strategy: Champions are your close combat units, use them to screen the archers. Captain has a very good BS, so he shall shoot too as long as possible. That reduces the risk of losing him early too.
The youngbloods are too weak to fight alone, but they level up very fast. Keep tham a bit back and charge them into a fight with a stunned or prone enemy to finish him off and rake in EXP.
The archers shoot of course, but with mace and their free dagger they are dangerous in CC too.

One advice: NEVER jump down from a building. Skaven heroes might do this, but humans only cripple themselves when they try...

I tend to use my youngbloods to take the charges, their much cheaper if die than a swordsman. as for the champions i'd still take a bow on them due to ok bs an pepper the enemy with your warband as you close then charge.

helms and such can prob wait until you've had a few games and know what route you want to take.

getting your max on marksmen and swordsmen to fill up the roster is a good idea, don't bother with warriors when you have swordsmen option..

I'd take marksmen over swordmen and use the heroes for CC. The thing is, most hits will not kill an enemy but stun him. It takes another (easier) attack to finish him off. This attack is best done by a hero, becaus he gets EXP from it, swordsmen don't get EXP from kills.
Also a marksman promoted to hero by 'lads got talent is plain awesome!

a great source of information on Mordheim, its workings and warbands can be found on http://boringmordheimforum.forumieren.com/index.htm theres loads fo starter warband sby people with comments about whats good and what needs changed. also loads of terrain ideas for making your own sweet little town.

I think of the top of my head the warplock pistol can be used in the first round of cc like pistols.

Skaven seem to work well with slings nd clubs and masses. stick to buildings and advance on the enemy and swarm him when he leaves gaps.

Indeed, is it in your club? I still haven't had the chance to play a game even though I built my warband almost two years ago. I might drop by for a game, then... Won't be anytime soon, busy nowadays...

Moxer's list looks pretty good, though I'd take a few swordsmen where the sharpshooters are now, to protect those youngbloods until they're good to go.

no real point for more melee as reiklanders, may as well max out their bnefits of extra ranged shooters. their 25gold and add a mace and they can close and shoot the longbows/ows and then melee with two attacks along side your melee people.

Blunderbuss if used right can also add some fun.

I'll be playing Mord for the first time soon as well, using Rieks also.

I've decided to use my Maximillion conversion (W-E conv comp a year or so ago) as my Captain:

Light Armour
Sword
Buckler
Pistol
Longbow

Not the best kit, but characterful.

We played last Friday.

I chased an Orc warband that was flanking me into a rout, meanwhile the other 3 players were killing eachother, which allowed me to collect warpstone.

The last man standing from the group of three then came after me, but failed his rout test just when reaching me...

I won by being the only one left on the table. Two of my warband were OOA, one recovered without further injury, the other (a youngblood) lost an eye. My other youngblood, on the other hand, gained a wound, I got 120 GC and 4 warpstone. Not a bad outing, I guess...

Sounds good!

The lost eye is -1 BS? That is not too bad. If a youngblood gets a severe wound (being stupid, -M and such) it is often better to get a new one as they are cheap, but the BS isn't that important.

you came off great Soth,

Just use the youngblood as a expendable melee fighter now and spend th egolds on more troops and weapons, also make sur enow that you've played a game to get a lucky charm or two, 10g i think and may save your heros.

a blunderbuss may also prove to be useful to stop zergs towards your marksmen, and a second mace for the henchmen may prove useful with a sword for the main heroes (not young bloods)

what list did you end up going with in the end also?

With your gold try to get your warband 13 models strong to prevent early and unlucky rout tests.

My list (by heart) :

2x3 marksmen (long)bows, maces.
1 swordsman, sword

captain, 2 champions, 2 youngbloods : mace

Captain had a helmet. That's about it.

OK, so get additional weapons for your heroes: sword for the captain and maybe the champions, second mace for the young bloods.
The lone swordsman is a bit at a risk, if he is taken out in a game the whole "troop" ist taken out and will not get exp. If he dies the troop is lost completely.
Are the marksmen already maxed? I don't remember how many one can get.
So another swordman to bolster the troop would be good. Then another marksman (if possible) or swordsman to get to 13 models.

Lucky charms are really good, as duce said.

agree, get your captain a bow, sword and mace, champions a 2nd mace each maybe a bow each fi you can spare it,

Young bloods can wait until the end to see if you have enough for a 2nd mace each i suppose.

for the 6 marksmen a 2nd mace too, and maybe a swordsman and as you prob can guess a sword for him and a mace for him and the existing swordsman.

its pretty boring to keep suggesting maces but they do get the job done and give you a second attack for cheap.

The reason i say take bows on the heroes is that you can advance and still fire with the champions and captain. that and your talking a possible 9 shots per turn of bow fire, most of it with BS4.

hope the campaigns  fun too  :icon_razz:

but make sure you go for a lucky charm atleast for the captain, loosing him is a real kick in the nuts this early in a campaign especially the cost.

@Moxer, hes allowed 7 marksmen so 1 more and hes maxed. but as you said the swordsman group is only one man, so it may be better to get a 2nd one to make sue the group's exp is not lost.

Ow, this band is no easy nut to crack, well done!
One tactical advice: Only heroes get EXP from kills, let the swordsmen knock over the foes and then charge in the youngbloods to finish off the prone/stunned enemy and reap exp!

Hats off to you Soth, that warband cant be picked for thigns wrong, you've a good amount of shooters, heroes equipment is traditional and good, and you've even scored a lucky charm so your being clever for your leader (Death of captains really really suck early on)

As is the list is solid, all we can attampt is to give ideas for the route yuo want to take with them.

a few to consider may be:

Blunderbuss on a few marksmen
hire the tilien (Spelling?) marksman for even more shooty fun
get 7th marksman
once your warband is maxed get a halfling cookbook etc for few more  members.
tool up everyone before even thinking of armour

I take it you haven't got lucky with a 6th hero yet?

Great to see Mordheim threads on the Tavern again!  We can go much longer without discussing Mordheim than DoW.  I blame the Tileans.

Nice job on your first game, Soth!  Whens the second?

I'd recommend breaking up the groups of Henchmen until the elusive 6th Hero is promoted.  It makes for fiddly record sheets but it speeds the rise through the ranks.

Seeing people discuss it makes me want to play it.

Mmmhm, shouldn't be too hard to get some people trying it. If they'll play necromunda when they mostly play fantasy, I think I'm in for a shot.
