Pikemen
« on: March 13, 2009, 12:52:49 PM »
The Empire used to be able to take pike men as allies.   I seem to remember they fought four ranks deep and were the perfect defense.   Any idea if you can still take them

Sure man, grab yourself a couple of dogs of war pikemen, they fought in four ranks and have always strike first, +1 strength against cavalry. I think they are special choices for an empire army

He's right, Standard pikemen are a rare slot whilst some regiments of renown are special.
As for the pike rules,
Fight in 4 ranks, charge with 3 ranks
always strike 1st unless apponent has asf special rule or magic item
+1 strength against cavalry, monsters and large targets.

(But i think they should be added to the next Empire edition, but thats just my opponion )

Will give you the information you need.  You should really save this onto your computer as it seems like this is the only site that carries the lists now and it's hard to say how long they'll stay.

The stats, points and abilities can be found in the DoW pdf.

I think your current best bet would be checking out GW-Australia for it, although you could probably find a link to it here if your search-fu is good.

(please don't post full stats posts, folks.)

Just let me ensure that I have this right.   Pikemen can be included as a rare choice in an empire army.   Considering that a large unit of pikemen, say thirty, with full command would cost 360 (330 without) points with heavy armour what do people think of this choice.   Could they replace the swordsmen in TVI's battle plan.   Though if you give them detatchments they would cost say four hundred points a unit and you would need at least three units, thats 1200 points on core troops for just three units.   Again what do people think?

They cant have detachments, they arent state troops

Though, as has been said, they should be in the next army book.

There's no reason we shouldn't have them.  Empire is all about the Landsknecht feel, and pikes were all the rage with them.
The first school of thought is that the ragged-assed Stirlanders, not having two coppers to rub together, nicked it when an elven envoy was passing through the area and had hopped off it to take a pee behind a tree

I often find that they dont quite work out, and sometimes suffer from rubber pike syndrome, but being pike, lack a warhorse to save their embarrasement

I think its probably down to lacking detachments.

All the more reason to make them state troops...though I admit we already have a lot of core choices, I just feel we're left out without pikes.  It doesn't feel like a proper Landsknecht army without them.

I agree. Here's my favourite pikemen photo from a battle of mine in the old C3 campaign:

Photobucket has now re-destroyed my pictures, so the first half of my collected works thread is no longer working again. To see my website version of the campaign thread, with fully functioning pictures, please go to https://bigsmallworlds.com/

I love Pikemen. I really would like to see them in the Empire, but if they aren't put in next, I wont be upset either.

Knowing my newer group they'd probably let me use them as core quite happily right now anyway.

T3 with a 5+ save...not unlike the state troops.... so you pay 6pts for ASF, fight in 4 Ranks, and STR 4 against Cavalry, Monsters, and Large Targets.

Using Pikes encourages cruelty to fish.  Not cool.
I don't know what a pisolires is but it sounds like a musical instrument you play with urine...

I am building an army with the intent of using a large pike block flanked by solid core units.  I have only run a few small test battles with them against some goblins.   I grant that goblins might not bet much of a challenge, but my pikes crushed goblin spear and sword units in hand to hand.  I did suffer losses when exposed to prolonged missile fire so having them screened looks like it will be a requirement when running them.

You can never have enough threads crying about halberdiers. We have an epic ballad in Nordland called the Halberdiers' Lament. Luckily for you, I shall not sing it.

It's certainly as valid a reason as the drawbacks, I was just laying the pikemans cards on the table!
