Border Princes Themed Empire
« on: November 17, 2021, 09:25:19 PM »
A few friends and I are going to play Eighth again, starting in the New Year.

A couple of us will also be playing the Grudge of Drong too, with my Empire substituting for the perfidious High Elves.

I need to build up to this though from my army as it was left all those years ago, some of which needs some TLC. Here is what I have so far:

So, my first question I think is do I stick with the theme and expand or repaint everything?

Secondly, what shall I expand the army with?

Thanks for stopping by and happy hobbying.

The theme is a feeling or a matter of taste. We all have it and we all have different ones.
I would stick to it, it has potential for some good stories.

The colour scheme seems okay to me to, the border princes theme also means you can go wild with newer units (colour schemes, background, etc.)  If you consolidate the "core" of your army, the other units will start filling the gaps naturely.

Thank you, I do like that the theme can let me add Bretonnian, Kislev and maybe some other units for counts-as options.

It seems such an interesting part of the world too.

I will stick with the scheme but maybe be more adventurous with new units.  :smile2:

Hey, thanks mate. I flicked through some of the tactics bits and it turns out a lot of what I have is considered a bit sub-par. Never mind, though, as long as the army looks good and is fun I don’t mind. I like the aesthetic of the big spear units.

I think I should be making some units bigger and adding cavalry though.

Don't see anything that would need TLC. Like the others have said, the paint scheme looks good and you will have limitless options to go with the Border Princes.

The 8th ed tactica & army book analysis has indeed concluded that some units are less efficient than others. But keep in mind that analysis is for all-comers in a tournament between competitive players and doesn't regard the terrain or any campaign-specific rulings. If you're going to play a narrative campaign among friends, possibly with some campaign rules on units and battles, I don't see the tournament tactica that important.

Unless all your friends go for very competitive lists & competitive playstyle. Then the little differences between units start to come through. So you should probably discuss this with your friends first.

Taking the advice from the Generals of the Empire here, I’ve continued on with the scheme.

I’ve finished another ten spearman and added them to their unit. They don’t look great individually but I like the look of the unit and I have about twenty more to add. I think with seventy or so it will look quite epic.

I’ve decided to base the completed units as I go, rather than individual figures, and probably do their movement tray at the same time.

Thank you, mate! Excited to get the rest done.

Do you think I’d be ok to use the Bretonnian Men-at-arms as halberdiers or are they more like spears too?

I think it’ll be fun and give a decent fight. What do you think?

130 r&f in a 1,500 pts list!

This will look impressive on the table!

I would go even further and state that this is the spirit of the game. Although a cannon somewhere there would suit Empire.

Could you tell us more about the scenario and the story behind this army?

Definitely bring a cannon.  Maybe subtract some spears from each block?  For points for the cannon.

Does 'no elite units' mean you don't get special or rare choices?

if cannons are out, I would try and fit one or two small units of knights in. 5-6 with musician. lose some spearmen and some handgunners and one archer unit to pay for it.

without a BSB or Lord, leadership will be a problem. at least knights have 8.

Hi all,

We are refighting the Grudge of Drong, with my Empire substituting for the High Elves. In the narrative for the first battle, the Elf army is quickly assembled and has to get in position to confront the rampaging and drunken dwarfs quickly.

The narrative elf list has a hero character, a wizard, spear elves, archers, shadow warriors and silver helms.

So, I thought I’d go for a roughly equivalent army of less elite units and avoid war machines.

Maybe a unit or two of five knights though, I could model some great weapon ones which might look good!? It would be nice to make them look like ruffians and then bring in the knightly orders later as inner circle when things escalate.

Will it give the dwarfs a good (and fun) fight do you think?

I got some part painted walls for cheap off eBay and I’ve quickly tarted them up a bit.

I promise there will eventually be other units

Classics!

Got the same set, with hedges, still unopened.  :icon_mrgreen:

Thanks for explaining the scenario. Now your troop choices make perfect sense.

Yeah, I got the hedges too, I’m really happy with them.

I’ve been wondering about putting a transfer on the banner in the cream section. Does anybody have any suggestions please?

When I paint a swords unit I might also paint that one yellow with an eagle motif as an homage to the Total War Border Princes, I think my fluff would be they are an allied unit from Myrmidens.

I am Franz, they will obey!

You could buy decal paper and print something from the internet?

Did a search on "warhammer empire decals print" and got a lot of picture hits. Many Bretonnia & others, but some of those would work finely too. No experience what really is printable in 28mm scale, but I'm pretty sure you will find a good option there.

Added another eleven Spearmen, I nearly have enough ready for my first game!

I still have to base them though.

Then, there’ll be another five knights to do and captain on horse.

I like your colour scheme a lot. Once you've based them uniformly they're gonna look great!

I’ve just finished off this Ogre Unit Filler.

I haven’t decided how I’m basing everything yet I’m afraid!

nice job on the unitfiller.   :eusa_clap:

You will succeed in making a base that you will like.   :icon_cool:    Just take a couple of empty bases and make a few.  go wild.  Then you can overthink which one to use.  Apply it one one (small) unit.  If you still like it apply it on the army.

You have lots of time.  :biggriin:  succes!
