"Jack of the trade" armies: your choice
« on: July 15, 2003, 07:38:59 PM »
Greetings all.

As all empire generals know, the Empire is the most versatile army around.
However, some likes to play empire differently. Some puts emphasis on a shooty army, others infantry etc. What is your preffered style?
I ask this question because I view my army as perhaps too versatile to be effective.

My force (roughly):
Infantry: Swordsmen (20) and 10 fc det, Greatswords (15)
Assault: Knights (8 ), Pistoliers (5)
Shooty: Handgunner (10), Cannon, Mortar, Hellblaster

Anybody who likes to chip in ideas or comments?

Depending on how competative I'm feeling I'll either pick a specialised army or otherwise just a "Jack of all trades" army as you put it. Your army is fairly small, it cant be more than 1500 pts with characters? I can cetainly say that you need more infantry and bigger units too. I usually take 25-30 men in a unit and have free company detachments as you do.

In some ways it depends on who you are playing and whether they specialse their armies to play yours?

okay, here it goes..

I'm Mainly a Tournament player (i rarely have time to come to the weekly play in the club, even though I'm the one which runs it all), that does that most of my games are at tournaments.

So i have to train with "take all comers list" that means:

A few (among them a steam tank) fast assault elements to counter charge and scare away the opponent from closing in of my:
shooting, tree warmachines and 2x10 handgunenrs gives me a solid base of shooting which are protected by:
25 swords men with griffon banner and 10 FC and 20 swordsmen with 10 FC.

I don't take any magic at all (only a lvl 1 scroll guy), I find that it's to hard to put trust in magic, they just dispel it, but they surely DON'T dispel my hellblaster (it just blows up)

the bonus of tournaments is that players don't tool their army to beat you.. :D

Yeah, I know. I'm aiming at 2000pt armies. I'm thinking about throwing Greatswords out, and replace them with more troops. A good idea? Any suggestions on how to make room for more troops would be welcome.

My current list:

EC; gw, AoMI & VH speculum
WP on steed;HA, sh & gw
Scrollcaddie (2 scrolls)
Captain on flying horse (fpa, sh&lance)

27 swordsmen (full command& griffon)
6 IC knights (full command&warbanner)
6 regular knights (mus&champ)
12 gunners incl mus, mm&HLR
10 gunners incl mus, mm&HLR
5 huntsmen

2 cannons
6 pistoliers incl mm &rep.pistol

hellblaster

But I am considering trying a list with no pistoliers and another unit of knights (most likely White wolves, non-IC again and no standard)

This would give me 5 IC knights with WP & warbanner plus 2 more heavy cav units but without standard. Not as maneuverable but more resilient.

And most of all; an excellent reason for painting up some White wolves.  :D
History, although sometimes made up of the few acts of the great, is more often shaped by the many acts of the small.

I'm painting up some White Wolves for a Middenland list.  Boris ready to go and now I'm working on some other units.  I have 17 crossbowmen already painted.  At the Charlotte event, I hope to pick up some Mordheim sprues to do some more Ulric stuff.  My WP of Ulric is on my painting table as we speak.
