Historical References of the Iron Warriors

The themes of the Iron Warriors in Warhammer 40'000 revolve around the drudgery, hardship and murderous grind of trench warfare and siegecraft.

The primary historical reference of the Iron Warriors becoming disappointed and embittered after endless siege warfare draws upon the souring of armies and European cultures during the drawn-out attrition and hunger of the Great War (1914-1918), which ended in state collapse, attempted mutinies, roving bandits, revolution and civil war in many countries as the great powers raced toward the bottom in total war. This is the main idea: See the French army mutinies of 1917; the Russian revolution and coup and civil war; the disintegration of Austria-Hungary toward the end of the war complete with masses of bandits; the German revolutions and civil strife; the short-lived revolutionary rule of Bela Kun in Hungary, among other things. To say nothing of Italy immediately after the war, where the imminent threat of revolution in northern Italy and widespread bitterness over catastrophic losses and perceived poor treatment by its Entente allies at the peace treaties led to the march on Rome.

Even in neutral Sweden with its lack of food production and arable land, the British blockade caused widespread hunger, made much worse by the country selling grain to Germany for profit and by black market profiteering (mistakes not repeated during the Second World War). Tales of hunger and desperation abound at the end of the First World War. For instance, trains loaded with confiscated Romanian grain destined for Germany were seized in Vienna to feed empty stomachs, in a fascinating spat between allies. The German Michael offensive of 1918 partially failed when hungry stormtroopers came across well-stocked Entente supply depots, and the famous Prussian discipline broke down as shocked officers could not possibly convince their soldiers to resume the offensive and press the attack. Instead, the hungry German soldiers gorged themselves on the bountiful food stocks of their enemies, thereby slowing down the attack. British army jokes after the failed German offensives quip about masses of Germans offering themselves up willingly as prisoners of war, so that all the Tommies needed to do was walk out with a sandwich.

All this souring of countries and armies, and all this strife from the end of the Great War are the primary historical source of inspiration for the Iron Warriors' background. Have you ever thought that the embitterment of Astartes in endless siege warfare sounded contrived? Now you know why: The inspiration is the tumbling end of the Great War.

The Iron Warriors also draw upon historical themes of ancient siegecraft and military engineering, and particularly Greek and Roman ones, as enshrined in their homeworld. The decimation comes from here, to say nothing of Syracuse with its brilliant siege engineers and inventors. The Stor-Bezashk siege engine corps is by the way the name of the veterinarians of the Sassanid Persians from late antiquity, responsible for caring for their armies' crucial horses.

Lastly, the background for this Legion, named the Corpse Grinders before the rediscovery of Perturabo, would seem to point to the Corpse Grinders being recruited from some futuristic Mad Max variant of vaquero and cowboy culture in a desiccated and bombed-out dry version of Central Amerika, although probably not with cattle herds as their main sustenance.

Have you spotted any other historical references in the background of the Iron Warriors Legion? If so, please share!

Being aware of the historical inspiration behind 40k better enables us to craft background and stories fit for the themes in play.

Cheers

Great job
I love the sculpt of the 'grenade launcher'. Very Loony Toons esque
Great job on the old hero too. I miss the old hero minis. You could paint them straight out of the blister and didn't need to worry about sub-assemblies and billowing capes

4 attacks with a dragon slayer sword, 360 degree charge arc, and immune to psychology? That seems like a pretty legit monster hunter. Pricey though, and a little squishy.

We've been over this in a different thread, and the concensus was that it's garbage: Looks good on paper initially but once you do the math you realize how ineffective it is.

Against truly scary monsters where you really need it to work (read: ridden monsters), you'll most likely hit on 4+, so 2 hits, then 33% chance of getting a 6, and they have a ward ontop, so best case scenario, you have a ~15% of it working, and the remaining 85% you're just throwing a pretty expensive character to his death (most ridden monsters will beat him to a pulp).

He's alright at hunting less dangerous monsters where he hits on 3+ and where he might even survive a retaliation and get to swing again, but overall in an allcommers list, he's more often than not a waste of points, especially given how useless he is against everything else.

TLDR: Pick Ogre Blade instead, almost as good at killing monsters but vastly better against everything else.

Edit: Personally I think Dragon Slayer Sword needs regular Killing Bow as well, it's just so bad at 50 pts. It is too specialized for it's own good and it doesn't make sense that something that can oneshot a dragon can't oneshot a goblin bigboss.

Another classic early 90s sculpt finished

They don't. I recall the mould lines on these night goblins were worse.
I do recall there were some interesting conversion options for them though - I just can't remember what!

Rowsdower: Aye!

Cornered Struggle

"From these hab-block prison walls,
into the lordless underhive,
instead of shackles on my wrists,
I carry an old rifle.

The kin that once kissed me in love,
are now all gone into the grinder,
from this lights-on, and out and on,
I'm all alone with my rifle.

We are but few in numbers, aye,
but still we are worth billions,
in pipe-duct and in chasm we blow,
both bridges and brigades.

The Loyalists will all tremble,
not knowing from whence,
purge victims from underfloor,
will sabotage and snipe them.

The word revenge is worth something,
when it is written out in blood,
we are striking from the dark,
out from sewer and holestead.

No! We shall not be the last,
the last of all the ratlings,
brings the lumen to the dark,
the ratling partisans strike.

From pit of decay and dust,
from cellar o'ergrown by moss,
we have seen the truth so raw,
with our very own eyes.

We who're cornered and forsaken,
they'll grind us into ration bars,
not one of our kin 'ill be spared,
they would have all of us snared.

No! We shall not be the last,
the last of all the ratlings,
brings the lumen to the dark,
the ratling partisans strike.

Whether slave or damned tramp,
scum, outcast or leper,
you shall rise to fight and fall,
in flames of the final revolt.

For silence is nought but filth,
when all of us are doomed here,
we who are accursed outlaws,
must sacrifice blood and soul.

In red lights-on of stark terror,
in lights-off of black despair,
with blood an' sweat arise new race,
to defy that Governor Sloann.

We swear to stake his head on high,
raised above the upperest spire,
for if our kin cannot survive,
we shall still have our vengeance.

No! We shall not be the last,
the last of all the ratlings,
brings the lumen to the dark,
the ratling partisans strike.

No! We shall not be the last,
the last of all the ratlings,
brings the lumen to the dark,
the ratling partisans strike."

- Heretical abhuman guerilla song found on Thema Cibyrrhaeots, translated into Low Gothic from the local ratling tongue of Skritchvicc, sung by the rebels of warlord Bimbop Bulbafeast, the paramilitary ratling leader of a final bastion in the underhive of Hive Heraclonas, who wages a war against the sanctioned eradication of his people: The above sample of insurrectionary sinspeech was extracted from a flayed abhuman prisoner put under acidic torture by the planetary Securitate, before execution by abacination, drawing and quartering

The Old World Cometh Again !!! / Re: Action economy and detachments
« Last post by Warlord on Today at 04:23:54 AM »
So thinking about your theory here, I have some issues.

Firstly, utilisation of Fleeing as a charge reaction is strong Action Economy. Some units do it better than others (Such as Fire and Flee), but FBIGO also plays a part in this. An overrun, or a restrain in a poor position is also Action Economy. I believe Drilled also allows a reform instead of an Overrun? Stand and Shoot is also action economy. Detachment stand and shoot counting to the parents CR is also worth discussing.
And to this point, I think it also losing the nuance of the bait and flee strategy that all armies can do, but perhaps we can do better with our immune to panic Generals and Captains and ItP GMs and CMs.

I think if you are going to properly develop this idea, don't do it with a lens for detachments being amazing. Do it with an actual analytical lens for how FBIGO, Drilled, Fire and Flee, and a number of other rules work. Supporting charge is something, but its situational, and the problem is that the units that can do it are poorly equipped and skilled state troops. Chaos Dwarves have a much better opportunity to use it IMO as their Warriors have hjeavy armour, better WS, and can carry GW's and get the I bonus on the opponents turn.

Secondly, suggesting that wizards are AMAZING in an action economy is misleading. Dispelling is great, yes, and can be across multiple phases, but they also carry a miscast risk. And it also implies that wizards can win the game.... which sometimes they can, but not always which is what such a high rating implies. Perhaos leave wizards out until later.

Maybe give him a healing potion and a couple of charmed shields to keep a ward save on him.

Could also hit him with Battle Lust to get another attack and hatred with that dragon slaying sword.

You could do worse, but I’m not ready to bet the farm on him.
