British, German, Italian desert warriors 1940-1943

Australian troops captured an abundance of those Italian tanks and used them briefly. I've heard the engines in them were ok but everything was a victim of cost cutting

The North African campaign from 1940 to 1943 was a critical theater in World War II, featuring intense battles between British, German, and Italian forces. The conflict began with Italy's declaration of war in June 1940 and saw the British Commonwealth forces, including troops from Australia and New Zealand, engage in a series of operations against the Italian 10th Army. Under the command of General Archibald Wavell and later General Bernard Montgomery, the British Eighth Army achieved significant victories, notably during Operation Compass, which decimated Italian forces and resulted in the Siege of Tobruk. The arrival of the German Afrika Korps, led by General Erwin Rommel, intensified the fighting, as Rommel's tactics emphasized speed and maneuverability in the harsh desert environment.
Key battles such as the Second Battle of El Alamein marked turning points in the campaign, leading to a decisive Allied victory that forced Axis forces to retreat. The campaign resulted in substantial casualties on both sides—approximately 620,000 for Axis powers and about 220,000 for the British Commonwealth. Ultimately, the North African campaign not only neutralized Axis influence in the region but also set the stage for subsequent Allied invasions of Sicily and Italy, demonstrating the importance of logistics and combined arms tactics in desert warfare.
