1500pt Empire, all infantry, V Gobbos!
(1/1)
Edwin von Dufflecoat:
Tonight I decided to run an all Infantry Imperial force, against a surprise opponent...that turned out to be goblins. I dunno if there's any lessons to be taken from it for those of you trying to figure out the whole Infantry thing, but I present it here anyway.
My last fight against gobbos went very badly. My tightly packed ranks of closely supporting units got fanaticked then pushed into Gorks feet, and it was all a bit one sided. I was keen to not repeat that.
Anyway , the armies were as follows:
Empire 1500
Captain with halberd and full plate
Witch Hunter with duel pistols
L1 wizard
Warrior Priest with great hammer
Engineer
12 vet halberdiers, full command, drilled. 2 x 6 halberdier detachments,
12 crossbowmen, full command, drilled, 2 x 6 crossbowmen detachments.
2 x5 archers
10 flagellents
5 mercenary ogres with great weapons.
10 mercenary Imperial dwarfs with full command and crossbows.
A helblaster
A Mortar.
The wizard took the glittering robe spell. The mercenaries behaved impeccably!
The goblins:
2 x 30 goblins , full command , 6 fanatics.
3 trolls
2 x l4 wizards with magic boosty things.
A giant.
A snotling pump wagon
2 x warbosses, and a battle std all with swords of mights.
My plan to prevent a replay of the fanatic/gorkfoot blender was simple: spread out! So my crossbows, flagellents,
and warmachines spread across the centre, the archers skirmished amongst a hamlet protecting my left flank, the ogres and halberdiers spread out on my right.
The goblins formed up in a nice tight phalanx in the centre with the trolls and and giant on opposite wings.
I threw the ogres and flagellents forward to draw out fanatics as far ahead of my main line as possible. Their targets were the trolls and giant respectively. The halberdiers marched up the flank, staying well clear of anything. I tried concentrating all my fire on one of the big goblin units , but the Mortar didn't cooperate.
The goblins advanced slowly, hexing everything in sight, and throwing gorks feet out with wild abandon, but to little effect.
The flagellents and priest fell on the enemy first: charging and felling the giant in a single round. They got pretty close to the big goblin unit in support but took three fanatics to the face. The priest ran back, but the fanatics had shot their bolt too far from any of my other units to effect them.
The Ogres had to weather three fanatics and a foot of gork before they struck the trolls, destroying them. These 3 fanatics were all dead within a turn, slamming into each other and a foot of gork.
The mass of crossbows and helblaster were taking a steady toll on the mass of goblins. The last two figures in one unit were having to hide behind a hill, and the other was at half strength dodging it's own fanatics!
My halberdiers and completed their flanking march and turned to advance into the centre of the field: 18 across and 2 deep they made an imposing spectacle.
As the goblin wizard pair advanced they were clearly hoping the barrage of Gorks Feet would finally take its toll on my infantry but it was not to be. When one finally struck it landed on the fleeing sigmarite priest and the pump wagon, then the goblins behind...and then both goblin wizards! The priest survived, and clearly believing Sigmar was with him , rallied, and turned to fight the Goblin Warlord...
A volley of crossbowbolts avenged him. And the last goblin warlord with his sole remaining friend were being chased towards their table edge by the ogres and halberdiers.
Empire Casualties: 10 flagellents, 3 ogres, 1 Warrior priest.
Goblin casualties: er...everything except 1 warlord and 1 goblin.
So massed crossbows are pretty good. Even a few flagellents can wreck face. A level 1 wizard and a little magical resistance can provide adequate defense against 2 l4. 2 level 4s aren't actually particularly devastating. Spreading out and careful manoeuvering minimises casualties from templates and fanatics. I never got to find out what the 24 halberdiers could do: by the time they got into charge range there was nothing left for them to fight!
So not exactly a GT level game...but don't give up on Infantry yet.

Thanks for the write up sounds like a fun game
I think in ToW infantry vs infantry makes for fun games and usually somewhat balanced
It’s just that infantry doesn’t do much if the enemy has no infantry which is very common amongst the sweaty gamers
KPhan1212:
Yeah, the true test of your new infantry configuration will be how well it holds up against heavy cavalry and monsters.

in my previous game against chaos the same infantry ( with slightly different artillery and character back up) dealt with a Chimera, giant and Chaos lord on manticore pretty handily.... :biggriin:

That’s impressive! I was going to say I don’t think Goblins are a great test of combat efficiency. Thanks for the report though and it sounds like a fun game (definitely for you at least).
