Wow... didn't know there were so many manufacturers of halflings!

Wargames factory is just over 50% of the way to making halflings on the liberty and union league:

I sent an email to Goblin Factory. I'm going to try picking up a small assortment to see what they're like & if they're worth getting more.

In fact, maybe we can use this thread for photos, reviews and comparison photos as well.

I'll have to dig out some of mine. I've got Grenadier, Ral Partha, Reaper and the old GW/Marauder figures. I stripped a lot of them about a year ago. Maybe it's time I paint a few up.

I recently got ahold of a bunch of the old GW halflings from the 80s, and am painting up a unit.  I can post some pics here as I go.  I also have a few battleforge halflings one the way to me in the mail to toss in the mix too...

I like the goat-riding general by Warploque.

I recently got ahold of a bunch of the old GW halflings from the 80s, and am painting up a unit.  I can post some pics here as I go.

I love those! I have a little unit of 12 that are among my favourite miniatures.

So I'd like to see pictures of yours.

Hardly a definitive list but definitely worth a look particularly at the halfling models pictured from the 1980's

The Battleforge is in the process of getting his 2nd edition halflings painted and photographed for his website.
The Elector Count Halfling for the Moot is finished and I'm expecting his musician the town cryer to be up shortly.
Black and white photos of metals just look awful, they need to be painted and photographed nicely to see what the model can achieve aesthetically, so after much badgering he is finally getting around to painting and photographing them... slowly.
The 2nd edition are all about the state halfling troops and the models are much cleaner and sharper than the rustic cousins of the first edition.
Coming soon...

Just found these linked from LAF to a blog of a guy that went to the foundry open day:

Apparently foundry is supposed to release them later this year.  They actually look decent in this photo, unlike some recent foundry releases...

Anyone care to speculate on how much the price tag will be?

Very little useable there for a table top army, but they could make interesting additions to vignette.
Better than their recent sculpts.

What are you talking about. They would make a great Free Company unit of Halflings. If I were to ever build a Halfling army those would definitely have a place in it.
Title: Re: The Halfling File
Post by: Justnorth on February 26, 2012, 12:33:07 PM
Good onya mate.
Talking about it and actually doing it are 2 different matters. :icon_wink:
My halfling units are all 20-30 strong minimum and apart from the few Foundry halflings pictured that are viable as rank and file, I wouldn't appreciate the amount of repetition required to make them a decent sized unit. A sprinkling of the few would be fine but I don't what the scale of those models is like yet.
If there are more coming in poses better for RaF  that might work out well.

Secondly, I still really like the old GW plastics for free company, one of the best sprues ever. That mordheim sprue is wicked.

OK, quick comparison of the Goblin Factory halflings...

First off, let me say that the Reaper figure is one of my all time favorite halfling figures. Moving on... the rest are just some of the few semi-common halflings I could show for reference, as well as an easy to recognize Empire figure, and my traditional Empire photo model/mascot. (The handgunner - I think some names for him were suggested at Warseer, but I don't remember what they are right now.)

Obviously I haven't painted any yet. In general I like the look of them. I like that they seem humble (not as "heroic" as the Reaper figure) but without being a caricature. But they are a bit retro looking... sort of like some of the old (and horribly painted) Grenadier halflings I've got tucked away. I don't know that they compare to the Reaper figure's quality. Maybe not up to the level of some of the other competition, either, but then there is the price to consider. For the price, at least here in the US, I think they're a good deal. The two packs I got were $5.50 for 4 command figures and $8.50 for 6 archers. So I spent $13.00 on 10 figures. Looking at some of the other new fantasy figures... $5 to $8 each. So I guess there's that to weigh as well.

I have no idea if/when their web page is going to be updated to include the halflings. He's also got kobolds as well as the eponymous goblins.

Title: Re: The Halfling File
Post by: Justnorth on March 13, 2012, 07:40:13 PM
They look ok, it's always harsh on figures to make judgements when they are unpainted let alone up against painted models.
They look a little bit little but with some green stuff to level out the base on top of the slotta base and flocking the might look a little bigger.
I would like to see them when they are painted, especially if you are going to give them the same kind of caring treatment you did on the handgunner. I'm sure they will come to life a lot more. It will bring out the character that is hard to define in an unpainted miniature.
I would have put one of the regular Perry sculpted spearman halflings in there too.
The Reaper is the best proportioned of the options and a lovely model.

The price?
Very user friendly. Really nice price. It's always heartening to see other manufacturers offering deals and fair prices.

Deleted Mega Miniatures, since they sold their molds & shut down.

I also just found Stonehaven. No halflings, but a lot of other varieties of "small folk" that might fit some people's purposes/concepts. Some of the dwarf women, for example, look like they would make good halflings. Or if you don't mind pointy ears, the gnomes would work well. They've really got a lot of character. I really like most of these figures other than the elves.

Yes 023 - how could you have neglected Westfalia - don't you have some ............................

Also Forlorn Hope have the old Copplestone ones,
https://www.forlornhopegames.com/index.php/category/232-halfling-sets

and Northstar have his new ones on their Copplestone site.

Bah, I updated last night, but that revision and my reply appear to have gotten lost in the warp. I will update later tonight when I am in front of a computer instead of a phone.

And you're right - I am shamed. Westfalia's halfmen and others are my favorite new minis in years, and I've always been a big fan of Copplestone's sculpting, especially for easy to paint rank & file. Both definitely belong on the list!
Title: Re: The Halfling File
Post by: ZeroTwentythree on January 28, 2017, 08:44:48 PM
OK, added those three links. I should probably check all the old ones sometime soon to see if they're still valid. Probably should update the list on my web site/blog too....  :icon_redface:
Title: Re: The Halfling File
Post by: Midaski on January 29, 2017, 10:40:07 AM
Now I will repeat the post I made which also disappeared ........................

You mentioned in your original that you had been slacking in keeping it up to date, and I let you off  :engel:

You will also probably at some stage need to revise the White Knight links as he has sold off  moulds to TAG and Shortwars,

TAG have still not completed the Kickstarter and have not loaded any figures to their main site as far as I can see.

Shortwars are a bit more organised but still building on it.
http://www.shortwars.co.uk/?product_cat=halflings

and the Foundry offering has appeared under Warmonger

http://www.warmongerminiatures.com/collections/halflings

I was linked to Forlorn Hope after seeing the newer ones on Northstar, and then realised I had visited the FH stand at SELWG in 2015.
It was the Frostgrave had just launched period and I found 4 barbarians for £6 and also spotted some amazon cavalry on big cats that had 'snow leopards' written all over them ......................... ('spotted' / 'leopards' - did you see what I did there ................. )

Turned out the barbarians were older Copplestone stuff too as I recognised the figures when I started browsing the FH site. I might have bought a few more since ............  :closed-eyes:

They look interesting - some seem very 'yokel' and others have the portly look of the GW later ones around the DoW unit Lumpin' whatever

I've actually emailed them to see if they have any comparison pics against 28mm figs

Edit: Ok found out they are made by TTCombat - were a KS end of last year, and are around 20mm high

Those pictures of their halflings on the kickstarter page aren't doing it for me.  Makes me not want the Warlord ones at all.  It is like they've done them via computer sculpting and they don't look as good as other figures.

I buy them if they are cheap. Then I can excuse myself using the halflings as fodder while protecting my valuable Stirlanders... I mean Rhordians..

Similar to GP, I'm not crazy about the cartoon/parody style of the Warlord figures. But since there's a recent abundance of halflings, everyone can choose their preferred style. The other manufacturers have their own styles to suite other tastes.

Agreed.  Perhaps I'll even revisit the warlord figures and cherry pick a few, but for the moment, my money is going to Westfalia.

Looking at the Warlord ones, I was reminded of the very rustic / yokel look of Battleforge ones.

I amended the OP as the link wasn't working - and they effectively have two pages, at least, for halflings.

I'm having difficulty making up my mind. I'd like to get a box just to see how they are. But then I started thinking, well... if I get two boxes, shipping is free. Then I started thinking, well... if I get three boxes, I get that discounted price. Then I stopped and remembered that I've already got plenty of figures waiting to be painted, including Westfalia halflings. And although these look decent, I think I still like the Westfalia figures better. (I just wish that I wasn't having problems getting my orders/missing parts, and didn't have to deal with unbending a bunch of the resin spears/pikes. Both of which have been contributing to my procrastination on that project...)

I'll likely pick up at least one box of the plastic halflings up at some point. (Probably waiting til after the holidays.) In spite of the above indecision, the regular price + postage is still very affordable!

Like the looks of those.  :icon_cool: :::cheers:::

I picked up what looks to be a halfling character of some kind out of a bin full of various figures at a Fall-In! flea market this past weekend.  The label features the following ... 1650, Tercico Creativo, Morados Viedos, Mochilero.  The figure is made of resin, seems to be for a game, and the packaging included a card too.  The figure has flowing clothing, a sling with a doosy of a rock in it, a sword, and a 1600s era hat.

Just thought I would add a few comments to this thread.

I did get some Warlord Games / TTCombat halflings and a box of the Wargames Atlantic ones.

Pretty disappointed with the Warlord ones.

Firstly they are different proportions to Westphalia - they are about the same height, but the heads are much larger. They are more in keeping with the later GW ones - the guy with the sword and chicken drumstick and the large feather in his hat.
Westphalia halflings are generally human proportions just shorter.

They are also chubby and the bows on the archers are just stupid and 'toy' looking.
The resin seems a lot softer, and therefore more bendy and the weapons are flimsy.

And they need a lot of cleaning up - loads of excess resin supporting 'pipework'.

The Wargames Atlantic ones are plastic and are ok - not as detailed as Westphalia, but passable.

40 figures per box.
8 sprues with 5 x One piece body, and overall somewhere in the middle, or even closer to Westphalia proportion wise.

Lots of heads (15) loosely from different time periods if you want to theme your troops.

You cannot make 40 figures of the same weapon type though.

Your 5-man sprue has the following choices of weaponry with hands/arms
2 x Pike
2 x Polearms
2 x Bows
2 x Slings (Unusual)
1 x Short Sword
1 x Musician Horn

so you can multiply that by 8 to see your maximums.
2 Boxes would get you a decent varied small force.

Now I have a pic host I will try to knock up a comparison photo at some stage.

Per the pics, Black Tree have two very different ranges of halflings. Ral Partha and Reaper can also vary a lot too.

Thanks for the info on Warlord & Wargames Atlantic, I've been considering both lately.

I'd honestly prefer to get the all of the figures I want from Westfalia (favorite sculpts by a longshot!) but my orders either seem to arrive all messed up or not at all!

I don't think the Black Tree LOTR halfling line is alive. Haven't seen those minis on their website in years.

I think Reaper has two distinct fantasy scales: the 90's 28mm, and the 2000s 30-35mm, which is also the scale for all new bones plastics that are not a remolding of a 90's metal sculpt. The lines are named differently, so it's easy to differentiate them. (ATM can't remember just what the names were...)

Ok - here are some size comparison pics.
I have used one Westphalia figure (WES) -  and one GW figure from early 1990s era.

WG = Warlord Games (TTCombat)
WA  = Wargames Atlantic

GW, WA, WG, WA, WG, WES

GW, WG, WES, WG,  WG,  WA

WES,  5 x Midlam, GW

One or two could have been posed at a better angle, but I think you can see what I meant about the 'proportions' on the Warlord Games/TTCombat ones.
They are probably not as bad as I thought originally now I have cleaned them up, but the soft resin means I have had some broken weapons.
The Wargames Atlantic ones are better in my opinion, and not immune to some criticism: the pike was a devil to line up with the left (handless) arm, and there is a right arm with an arrow, to combine with the bow left arm, and the arrow is incredibly thin. One broke just clipping it off the sprue, and some of the other weapons are a bit flimsy.

While I had the camera set up, I took a few more of other Halflings I have.
Padre mentioned the Harlequin?Black Tree ones of which I have a few.

Again I used a Westphalia and GW Figure to help the size comparison.

Harlequin/ Black Tree - small

Harlequin/ Black Tree - larger

These have 'Mark SIMS' on the tab - he of Crusader Miniatures, but I think these are from a previous 'job' and may have ended up at Black Hat, and again moved on? Simple but a nice size fit for rear ranks.

Lastly some 'Lord of the Rings' figures and I am not sure of the source though I suspect one is actually the GW game.

They have Merry, Sam, and Frodo on the tabs (in that order L to R ) but nothing else.

Edit - Also now includes 'Bilbo' from the unidentified set below - between the Valkyrie and Ral Partha figures.

These I suspect are from the GW game - they have the films 'look'.

and lastly I cannot identify these either - two of which are beyond tiny  :biggriin:

On the right they are small and skinny.

Somewhere I also have some other manufacturers' halflings.

Copplestone - couple of sets - some old ones, and some more recent.
Arcworlde Halflings of Hobbleshire set

and I have done 4 KS and included sets of Villagers of ...

Midlam Miniatures

and mustn't forget ... ...

White Knight's - loads of  :engel:

They were a follow up on White Knights Halfling ranges, which he sold to TAG, so they match the puffy pants and sleeves of the Imperial look, but I must admit for some reason I have never really liked the 'chickens' or roosters as mounts just generally as a concept.

Realistically they would have to be mutant chickens anyway as their relative size to the halflings are silly. Big pigs or even largeish goats are mor realistic by far.

Having said that I have some, and some of the new 'armoured' ones, but I think that says more for the stupid 'collector' in me, than for the aesthetic.

I was pretty disappointed to be honest - resin with the GW old chubby 'build', and very bland sculpts, nowhere near Westfalia for example.

It will be interesting to see what the 'Sand'/Arabian versions look like in the flesh when the new Desert of the Dead KS is delivered - the 'images' look better but they are just images.
