Title: Escalation League Advice
Post by: Warwhore on March 07, 2013, 06:34:41 PM
GW in Denver is hosting a fantasy escalation league starting at 500 pts. I've never played in one before, and wanted to get some input from the more experienced generals on this forum. What have you all found to be an effective 500 pt list i.e. general, supporting characters, core etc.

Thanks for the input! :::cheers:::

Warrior Priests allow you to compete in the magic phase without binding up a lot of points in a wizard. That being said, having a wizard a low points can mean that you're the only one even playing the magic phase which is a certain plus.

Warrior priests rock. You will get off your prayers regularly. So if taking a good block of troops, you will be hard to beat.

People don't have much to move in this kind of points either so something like pistliers can be nifty. You can draw blocls away if you want to concentrate on a certain thing, or even just harras them as they come at you.

Check my sig for the list I ran at 500 points. It went 8W-1D-4L, which is decent given that so much of 500 is about the dice you roll.

In lower point values i loved my WP/AL mounted in some knights with the ruby ring of ruin. you get to run an effective magic phase while not focusing on it

Thanks for the input so far. Here's a list I put together a few weeks back:

Heroes
Warrior Priest w/ Heavy Armor, Enchanted Shield, Great weapon 77pts

Special
3 Demigryph Knights 174 pts

Core
19 Halberdiers w/ FC 249 pts
10 Swordsmen detachment
5 Archer detachment

Total 500 pts

The idea is to redirect with the archers and pin with the swordsmen (taking advantage of the detachments ability to use the parent's ranks when determining steadfast) then hit the flanks with the DGK and/or the halberdiers.

The only problem that I can see is I only have two drops. I expect my opponents won't have more than three, so this shouldn't be to much of a drawback.

Turns out this list isn't legal; I need a minimum of three units :eusa_clap:

Detachments count as separate units.

Demigryphs wreck face at this point level. Not a lot can stop them in combat because of the tough armour save. Probably great for you but I don't know if it will win you many friends haha.

I would consider putting in a really cheap Magic Weapon on the Warrior Priest, I've only played a few games of 8th. but in my small gaming group the VC player uses a lot of Wraiths and Banshees at this point level. Ethereal's are a nightmare so low. Plus the addition of a Sword of Might or Biting Blade means the Enchanted Shield isn't wasted like it is with a great weapon.

What's the next point level? 750 or 800?

1000 pts

So is it true that detachments count as separate units?
