Yeah, this guys always comes to haunt you in your wandering on the twisting tracks of warhammer themes ideas.
My Empire theme is growing good now, really. Instead of making a totally separate Ulric/middenland list, I am painting an Ulrician mercenary regiment, who can fight in a drawn together army aswell as assisting the Stirlanders. Will be more of that in the future.
I have started to consider the dwarfs, and wonder if I should not make an army based around the Dragonback clans and Karak Izor. Maybe make a clan of grumbling dwarfs who constantly plans to take back the Dragonbacks and Ekrund, and who do nothing but train for war. A bit of a community of Spartanesque dwarfs. lots of red and bronze. Cheesy and awesome.
Then, I suddenly felt the longing for a more speararmed spartanesque army.
High elves will always spring to mind, seeming like the elite spearmens of the Warhammer world. I still got plenty of them, and separating from my heavy horse have started to feel even more awkward than before. Feels... wrong.
The Caledorian high elves are virtually Spartans on horseback. And their minis are lovely and their rules are kickass. Not to mention you can still take lots of them spears with them.
Still, they feel better as simply Caledorians.
Wood elves got stubborn speararmed infantry. Ethernal guard is roxor on paper but paperthin in practice unless played in a special way.
Then however, druchiis are for the most part too much morons to really match the demands upon a spartanesque warrior society.
But they have slaves who support their society and have many of the darker traits of the Spartans.
However, I can myself imagine a more stiff druchii group, who like a special witch elf cult belives sacrifices to Khanie are best delivered in battle and not in measly sacrifices and by overworking slaves.
The executioners have a very disciplined outlook on their task and take killing very seriously and don´t fiddle around with causing extra pain and such.
Somewhere here, I start to find the base for an exiled group of elves, who have turned their backs towards both Ulthuan and Naggaroth seeing that both societies are destroying themselves from inside by slackery, depravity and excess.
They have their elven realm set up somewhere. Have not figured out exactly where yet, but that will come. Much of the daily chores are run by slaves or by non-citizen elves, often exiled druchiis. The full citizens only train for war.
Because the cold one knights are so smashing, some gotta be in the army. But then there would be true spear phalanxes. 28- 30 strong each or so. Seven wide!
Gotta have some executioners, keeping up the traditions from Naggaroth. And then there would be some shade clan scouting about and together with the executioners patrolling the slaves land and keeping them in check. They would also provide missile fire for battles.
Infact, the non-citizen elves would fight as shades or corsairs (just because of the nice corsair kit).
I wonder how much of the minis I don´t need for the Woodies that I can use. Maybe the Black tree spearelves would work here...
