Possibly stupid cover save question
« on: September 27, 2013, 07:00:54 AM »
Okay, so we all know that when you shoot at an enemy target that is partially obscured by something else, it gains a cover save.

What has literally just occurred to me on the way to work is at what stage does this happen?  This might sound incredibly stupid, but does the enemy get a cover save from you, if you are shooting from within cover?  Or you are stood behind an aegis line?  Logically yes, they do right?

If you're in base contact with the defence line, you can shoot over it without giving a cover save to your target. Otherwise, it would be useless!

Not sure about shooting from a wood or something though.

If you are in area cover but the enemy isn't, they don't get a cover save.  For stuff like the aegis line, if you are deployed behind it, then you get a cover save and they don't.

Do you know where that is in the rulebook? I couldn't find it.

Not off the top of my head, but I thought it was from the area terrain section though I bet you could make the argument that being in area terrain and shooting out would still count as shooting through and give everyone cover saves.

In the area terrain section it just says you get a 5+ cover save if you're in there. Nothing about shooting out.

It might be on a completely different page I suppose!

Oh you meant the other way around, about two units in the same terrain not getting cover?

Yeah, I don't know if that is even a rule.  I honestly can't recall how my group even plays it!

Being in the terrain gives 5+ (area terrain). Shooting at people not in area terrain is purely true line of sight. If you're 25% obscured from the firer, you get it, otherwise you don't. So most guys in area terrain will be fine shooting at people out of it since they're only standing in knee deep rubble and have nothing actually obscuring the enemy models.

Aegis lines are pretty tall, if you're not jammed up against them you will be giving cover. TLoS rules, as far as I'm aware there's no additional rules.

We rule that if you are right up against the aegis, you are fine.  There are view slits all through it. Any unit not having the majority of its models in base to bas with the aegis afford the same cover to the enemy as they themselves get, 4+

I really hope this is right!  Will stop me being pulse rifled to death.
