Empire VS. large targets - your thoughts?
« on: October 04, 2011, 06:01:07 PM »
Hi all! I'm also posting this on the BattleReporter forums for as balanced an opinion as I can get - I find other races forums just insult us rather than provide helpful answers, !! What are your views/strategies/tactics for dealing with whatever large targets you might face - answers can be based on any army as long as you actually fight it reugularly. I am asking as I recently played a couple of games VS an O&G army with a Great Shaman Arachnarok and wanted to ask people's opinions on this and on large monsters in general. Thanks!!

Not to be pithy, but my tactics for dealing with big monsters generally revolves around two great cannons and a master engineer. That helps deal with most things, barring things with Ward Saves or the new Stonebeast from Ogres which takes half damage from multiple wound attacks.

My other tactic revolves around getting my opponent to charge something less than ideal with it to help avoid it while I work on killing the rest of his army. If you keep it away from your main forces it dosn't do much for them.

Cannonball to the face usually does the trick.... get 1 or 2 great cannons, with master engineer, en blast that puppy to smithereens xD
I mean.... d6 s 10 hits... Doesnt really sound like something you could survive right? Otherwise use a warrior priest with inner fire, in a swordsman regiment, will give good results.

In case of stormbanner walter + hammer of sigmar+ lvl1 light and IF banishment from the walter can work. 2d6 s5 with reroll to wound can usually put a few wounds on things.

if i know there is going to be a number of targets for my 2-3 cannons, i like to take some s5 attacks (greatswords or flaggies)
to be able to either tie them up indefinitely or even just wear them down with the help of a few buffs.

straight up though, your cannons ideally will always be pulling their weight. (i cant count how many dragons ive sniped with the)

In 7th I would never take more than 2 cannons, it would seem "unfriendly" but now, I take 3 cannons and a hestorm. That gives me enough ooomph to kill large targets and a large blast to smash infantry.

Either that or take karl franz on a warhorse with Ghal Maraz. or the sword of fate.

I regularly play against an OnG plays normal game and SoM games. To deal with the big nasties I usually take 2 cannons, three for SoM, with an engineer. Other ways I've used to defeat big nasties, death magic, Flaggies, Sword of Fate and Wyrm Slayer sword.

Cannons is the obvious answer. Note that they also have become more effective against infantry, with all those huge blocks running around these days.

I use shadow on my level four.

Pit of Shades (seasoned to taste with miasma) works well on targets with bigger bases. The Withering also makes guns and xbows much more effective.

If you're having problems with regenerating monsters it may be worth considering Lore of Fire; Flaming Sword will make your cannons autowound AND negate regen. Hydraburgers, anyone?

I'm going to commit threadomancy to ask if anyone's got anything further to add to this thread? If not then well and and good, I will just let it lie......

Don't forget the Helblaster as well. It can easily do 2-3 wounds do most things with high toughness.

Would it not do more on account of having more hits? Since it won't suffer -1 to hit VS LT's, it can shoot at long range - which is where it should be firing from - at 5+ to hit, which I.M.O for a BS 3 model at long range is pretty damn good!

No more +1 to hit Large Target I think. But even without that, it's hitting at 5+ (BS3 hitting on 4s normally, -1 long range, so hitting on 5s -- unless you're trying to add a penalty for multiple shot, which it doesn't suffer).

The cannon only does 1 S10 hit that causes a D6 wounds.

Cannons + engineer for outright killing.  Even better if your target is a multipart model (rider+dragon, screaming bells, stegadons, etc.).

Or stubborn blocks of infantry can hold up big targets indefinitely.
Odo drops the bombs and laughs at all the clucking.

......, it would really help if you did research before spouting your opinion...

It should be interesting to see what our BS shooting points will be adjusted to in the new army book.  Will they drop them to 6-7 pts each, or leave them at 8 and update shooting at Large Targets to +1 to hit in 9th?

Cannons! Especially with a shaman on a megaspider. One cannon hit will cripple the beast and kill the shaman at one time. Usually.
I hate fighting cannon armies with my spider. It’s also been killed by greatswords a couple of times. And once it got hit with the –toughness hex and got battered.
I don't care about the rules.

Pass the machete.

I did the WS hack on one when it charged a detachment of 5 archers, it killed 1 and the others did a wound on him  :biggriin:

Pity the stomp attack flattened em
