AL with Altar? Only good for Vampire Counts, imho.
Faith, Steel and Gunpowder.

If you feel bound to play your WP in character and he is the only character in an important block, then I would just run two of them there.

One dies for the glory of Sigmar or Ulric in the first round, leaving the other to fend for himself against the rank and file.  If your opponent challenges in subsequent rounds, he can step up to the plate because Hatred is no longer an issue.

It would also give you one more round of prayers.

Oh my, this isn't just for duty bound sake, If someone is going to max out the 50pts on defnsive gear then it really is worth it just to run a second warrior priest.

On a side note: I am not sure the AL is now worth his points compared to a WP. Unless you want to take the War Altar, but I am not sure that that is now worth its points either.
One of the main reasons to take an AL now is because you've maxed out your hero points.
And if your worried about the priest dying then AL is better because of the extra wound, extra magic points doesn't do too much else besides giving him VHS.
For Wissenland and the Countess!!!

Bear in mind that it's not hard to give even a bare bones warrior priest a 5+ Ward through his prayer. But then, no one here but me seems to ever get their prayers off so it might not be the solution to you.
There are three things each man judges another man by;

1. The size of his codpiece
2. The amount of skulls he carries
3. The length of his feather

Some thoughts on this thread (mind you I played countless of battles in 6th edition and before and only two with Empire in 8th edition, and two with my Lizardmen)...

1. I don't find it hard to get a prayer off. Just tool up 3-4 Wizards and choose the right order and targets. If the opponent knows a spell is going to hurt him bad (say his chaff and lone models), then they will forget your prayers quickly. Even one dice has 2/3 chance to get a prayer through if the opponent used his last dispel dice.

2. I find that most large units rarely see more than 1-2 important combat engagements in a game. So I don't see any reason trying to avoid combat with the Warrior Priests. I would rather tool them out with a good save. Having a champion to accept challenges is good to keep the WP alive for the remainder of a combat.
