It looks like this company is planning 28mm plastic multipart Romans and Celts...with more to come, if you look at the future books.

Excellent. Hopefully more companies will see there is a big market for 28mm plastics and it's something we'll see more of. The Perrys are releasing their own 28mm historical plastics soon starting with ACW with other ranges in the pipeline (ECW I had heard whispered).

Thank you GW for Warhammer Ancients, ECW, El Cid etc. I can now play a rules system I've always loved but don't have to pay through the nose for your vastly overpriced miniatures.

You must be the first I have ever encountered who thought historical games should be played with GW minis.

Not even GW does that...

That's not quite what I was getting at.

. What I meant to say is that I've always been a Fantasy gamer and only dabbled in historicals because I was never too keen on their (historicals) rules systems so I stuck to fantasy and GW figures. Now that the Warhammer Historical rules systems have gained a lot more popularity I can find opponents to play against using the rules system I most like (ie. Warhammer) but I can buy 28mm plastic (historical) infantry for a lot less than GW fantasy minis. ie. £12 for 36 infantry.

If you don't want to "pay through the nose" for GW figures, and are looking forward to playing games that don't require "official" miniatures, then why not buy alternative fantasy miniatures and play WFB anyway?

Not that I'd discourage you from historicals, Warhammer or otherwise, and I've got to admit I'm looking forward to seeing the Wargames Factory figures in production.

They are helmed by GW (ex GW??) peeps

I agree, I have never told someone they couldn't use a model just because it wasn't GW. Where other than a GT can't you use alternates?

At a very pissy local LGS, called the Amsterdam GW. I haven't played there, but they told me they only allow GW and painted miniatures. I'll stick to my LGC then.

Very nice Roman there!
Imagine using them as Empire swordsmen!
Field some catapults with Mortar rules for long range support, skip in the full plate... but hey, take some elite Cataphract cavalry as inner circle knights!
Make your light cavalry using "heavy javelins" or something and field them as pistoleers!

Sure, it will not be a really competitive army, but you could really get a very roman looking army using a perfectly legal Empire army!

I long for a well made Roman, but there is something about that one that I don't really like. I think it is the head and the pilum arm.

The 6th ed. plastics where the bestests, aye...
The only thing positive with our new monkeys is that you can make spears aswell and that they hold the halberds and spears in proper fighting positions.

Other than that, give me back the old multipart minis! They where so much more easy to paint and make as you wanted them! And not a lot of silly warhammergibberish bling on them!
I mean, many folks play Empire because they look like the old landsknechts, but GW seems to want them not looking so landsknechtly anymore, and I think they will alienate many players whose sole reason for playing WHFB is that it is the only way they can field an army looking as a landsknecht army.

I don't actually mind the new models but I would agree that the 6th edition ones are the feel I prefer.

The new Swordsmen and the head are better, I actually LOVE the new heads compared to the old models.

I have the core rule book for FOG and it is a very different system to WFB and WAB as well . Tried it out last week with my regular player using 15mm ancients .

Very detailed system , using several phases and a joint player action phase . The game is very DBM if you are familar with that system with new rules built in . The lists are avaliable from Ancients to the late Medieval period with the 'Storm of Arrows ' army list as the current release .

I like to do the Italian Condotta merc lists using my DOW army since the Perry Mins they designed for the army book in '98 would be perfect . The scales are for any sized minis but in 28mm the base sizes are a bit difficult for the movement scales suggested .

But it says if both players use the same 28mm they can ignore the basing rules and play as is . The FOG rules are very challenging and something new to learn .

I would recommend them if your are a military history nut like me , but it is not for the casual WFB gamer who likes a quick fast game . These rules can 'run the course in time and patience ' in comparison to WFB .

Sounds lovely! That is how proper games shall be! I just whish GW made an advanded rules supplement to WHFB so we could play true games and learn the newbs what a proper game is.
2 hours or 4 hours, does it matter? I mean, you usually set of a day for games anyway. Me and my friend where very suprised when we finished a 2500 point figth in under 3 hours!

I mean, these kind of games are meant to take some time! That is part of the hobby! It proves that the streamlining and dumbification of WHFB have gone to far!
