Best Allies for Empire
« on: March 04, 2004, 10:22:23 PM »
What is everyone's opinion on the best other army to ally with in a large combined battle...4,000 pts/side, w/ each army having 2000 points?

I have tried the rather obvious and fluffy, empire and dwarves. It worked pretty darn well. On the unorthodox and very very unfluffy side, empire and chaos-tzeentch. That was a pretty potent combo as well.

We don't play w/ fluff in our group, so what I am looking for is the best combo technically speaking.

The best combo is always about specialization and filling each others weaknesses.
What is the thing for the Empire to specialize in? Answer: Firepower, in all other things (Magic, close combat) we're average or below average usually. Only our hard and cheap knights are a choice of envy outside of our warmachines.

Thus the army to ally with should have good CC abilities and/or magic power.

You don't play with fluff, ey? Tsk tsk... :)

Maybe I should write up an article on the importance of playing according to fluff, never fielding unpainted miniatures, always write up fair and balanced lists and never choose battle-prowess over miniatures.

Sometimes I think I am the most orthodox player out there... :?
EDIT: see Africa for more examples ...

I like the dwarves - been really sucessful when I had some stunties holding the line.

they have good anchor units and don't take a lot of deployment room

my favorite ally has to be Ogres from DOW list.

They are great with GW - 3 S6 attacks, T4, 3 W, 6" move and fear for 41 points.

I just don't get into the fluff. We are about the game. I always play w/ painted miniatures, the modelling is what first got me interested.

Combatting cheese in our games is more of a gentleman's agreement. I don't use Stanks (while powerful, I think they don't really fit in the spirit of the game) that while we'll field "hard" armies, since we all play "hard" armies, it works out. Conversely, my oppononents will focus on their armie's strengths but don't do things that are ridiculous either.

You musn't forget that there are people who cannot buy there whole army at once, cannot paint it in a few months, because they cannot afford to. This is for young people (like me, being 15 isn't exactly the same as having enough money... ) but also for people with less money. Maybe those people want to play the game as well, and don't want to wait more than a year (at least) to be able to play the game.

No offense...no offense...

the empire and brettonia might be a sweet combo, never tried it myself but if u look at the charge ability of bretonnian knights with some IC or KO for a second charge or small flack attack with our State troops holding the center after the charge and artillery cover. i would suggest this for assaulting games and have them be the spear head

Highelves are good (ive tested this one =) there magic very good magic takes the need from our average magic. they have fewer less hard hitting but more accurate archers to support our troops there cavalry is good and the RBT dont blow up they are really good for most situations

Lizardmen arent bad either u take more cavalry then normal a sort of crusader army with a little artillery and some infantry to help support saurus.

woodelves wouldnt be bad i would assume u would take the brunt of the assault why he ran around marchblocking and shooting enemies with there little elf groups.

dwarves wouldnt be bad u would probably take more cavalry to eliminate there slowness in the march, and maybe some skirmishers to screen his smaller units against evil elves and good elves and any shooting army.

these are all the armies i have though about and worked out stratiges for in my long hours of pain and torment having nobody to talk to but my own head.

being a veteran of 2v2 games, I can tell you that Woodies are a poor ally.

they run and get out of the way, and leave you to take the brunt of the action.  The Weeds need space to play in, and that is at a premium in a larger game.

sad but true.

The Empire can be tailored to fit most areas, so I've always built my list to complement my ally.  If with an High Elf list, for example, they are good at magic, so I'll spend my points on combat characters.  Allied with Dwarves?  then bring the knights and wizards.

awww woodelves can be good if they have a smart commander, plus the way i play 2vs2 (not sure if this is the right way) is u divide the board in 1/2 and deploy that way (scouts go as normal) then u disscuss battleplans so that they arent in the way. but not having the ability to communicate can mess anyone up... i should know i cant even communicate with myself =)

I would lizzies are a  good allie for teh empire, due to their strong infantry and magic capbilities. Also fast moving skinks and krogiers give the empire something in "medium" speed bracket e.g 5 and 6.

Then there alwasy the obvious empire and skaven thought there may not be enought room on the table after the skaven player has deployed.

for those of you that don't have the General's Compendium:

get a copy or borrow a look at a friends, there is a page worth of discussion about allies and how to go about choosing them.

One of the armies I'm fielding is totally unpainted, and half proxied. Maybe I'll do better once I have time to finish it- but between painting all my Tau for 40k, tweaking and painting my knights for my Empire army, and converting two units (including scratch building knights), three characters, and a chariot for the proxied army, it's going to take a while before that army's fully painted.

Oh, and Empire might have cheap, hard knights, but Chaos knights are hard as diamonds in comparison (though definately not as cheap.) Especially with the Slaanesh Rapturous Standard, which halves the enemy's weapon skill. Eek.

It would be completely unfluffy - but as someone said, an Empire/Orc Horde would be a great combination. Empire supplies the shooting power and some magic, the Orcs field their cheap nasty magic, cheap war machines and a horde of rock hard infantry.

Imagine Empire and Chaos...
Maybe fluff wise, a Empire army of Nuln converts to Chaos gods..
And lends a god his army of Handgunners,Mortars and Hellblaster..

All the shooting of an Empire army, lead by rock hard troop of Chaos Warriors...

I suppose that's the thing. The Empire has by far the best gunline in the game, it's just a matter of protecting it from the hordes of Miners, Tunnellers, Chameleon Skinks, Terradons, FSOD's, Striggoi Vampires, Wyverns, Dragons, Shades, Pegasus Knights and the misfire dice.

Basically, any army that packs a lot of hard infantry to keep the enemy away from the Empire artillery will be a good playing partner.

There aren't so many players around here and we like to team up at times. However people don't like it when I suggest that I take my huge Empire army and team up with the nastiest Khorne Chaos player that lives!

Oddly no one really buys into the idea of facing such a combo. All said it must also be one of the hardest to face. Empire has the great artillery / gunline and Khorne with fantastic hth-capabilities and lots of dispell dice.

In my experence the Cult of Ulric provides the best fitting allies to the empire.  The empire is responsible for cannon fire and the massed infantry blocks. The Cult of ulric provides the Knights of the white wolf( giving them the bannor of warrior true almost makes them stubborn) Ulric cult provies more huntsmen to slow down the enemy for the empire gunline. Ulric cult also gives you a unit of stubborn skirmishers.

i dont agree with an all cavalry force with the bretts. it give your army 1 great weakness, you have little or no supporting troops. i would think an archery/atrillery heavier army with a big unit of flaggellents and greatswords maybe a cupple units of swordsmen points allowing. but deffinatly a cannon or 2
