By the way, this thread has so much info I'll need to come back again and again when I get to doing a ship project or two.

There is also a Warhammer set of rules, along the lines of the WarHammer Ancients and The Great War, that I saw a two guys using with some hand made ships and WFB models a ways back, too.

The thread exists to serve!  :smile2:

The Warhammer Historicals book would be--

Thanks for catching that deal Midaski!  Have one on me!

Wow...threadomancy protection....Wow.

As an admin over at Da Path, I have never seen such maj-ik-kal goody-ness.  Will have to make a note of that trick!  Hurr hurr hurr

Thanks for the head's up on the sale.  I might have to race a couple of you chaps to the prize (so to speak).  I just checked a local hobby store and the Chicago Battle Bunker, and neither stock this kind of stuff.  There are a couple copies on Amazon, and they have some copies on e-bay.  Rest assured, I just picked up my copy!  YAR!

I know that a fleet project like the one I am completing is pretty large and intimidating.  Even building a brig using these methods is a bit overwhelming (even for me)!  There are some good examples of smaller sloops that are easy to build and paint.  I will create a tutorial for us and post it here and on Da Path.  Hopefully I can encourage some of you to give Seahammer a try, especially since I have a hand in campaign design at Da Path.  Rest assured that I will be putting our next campaign near a sea or include a navigable river.

Is there any fluff or background here on the W-E site about the River Patrol or Empire navy?  Just curious.  That could be a nice little project.

There was a Black Library publication that had a section on the Empire's rivers that I saw last summer, but I can't recall what it was called. :icon_sad:

Well there are certainly a bunch of Stirlanders talking about their river patrols...  I don't recall seeing any of their boats...

Got my "Legends of the High Seas" through and I have had a bit of a look. - It's a Warhammer Historical production.

The foreword says it was inspired by the "Legends of the old West", and I have that too. It looks like the rules are very similar too.
They were based on Mordheim with some LotR stuff thrown in - you have 'Fame' and 'Fortune' points like 'Might' and whatever .................

144 pages + cover - rules for fighting with pirates, privateers, island natives and the navy, both on land and at sea. I haven't gone into the ship movement or fighting rules yet, but so far I am impressed.

What I like is that I don't have to buy any models - I can use any of my Empire or DoW minis, and the only difference is that they are on 20mm square bases rather than 'round' as shown in the book.
I doubt it will make a scrap of difference.

I think the author may be american - there is a pic on the inside back cover that shows the inside of a small fort - made form Hirst Arts blocks :biggriin:

Some of the land buildings shown are not too far away from use as Wild West buildings, so again scenery can be dual purpose.

Now I just need to build a boat or two .............

"Legends of the High Seas" are the rules being used by a couple of guys at the local store, and I'm told they are very much enjoying the system.  Another one of those games I'd like to eventually pick up. :icon_cool:

Good grief!  This is some great resource material.  I appreciate the effort you all have put into this.  Just to let you know, I am about to open up some forums on Da Warpath that will let us revisit and update our Pirate Orc Army Book (the older one was for the 6th Edition), and I have also created a Seahammer forum to discuss naval combat in Warhammer games.

I appreciate the review of the LOTHS book.  Mine has not arrived yet, but it is on the way.  I am really excited to see it as I hear there are some good things to the gaming system.  After reading some more Patrick O'Brien last night, I am jazzed to get some projects underway.

I bought materials for the small ship project, so I will begin building some sloops that are fairly easy to build out of balsa, card and foamboard.  Should be a fun project.  I also have a number of scenary projects spinning in my head: semaphore stations, forts, docks, lighthouses, seaside villas and villages. Time, effort and money....<sigh>

If you boys don't mind, I might borrow your links as the new forums open.  Perhaps you all would want to drop over sometime and make some comments.

As for 'my' links, I got most of them from you and WBK!  I just went through and organized them so I won't lose them.  My intention is to add to the list as this thread (and others) grows. I've been building little ships for Warhammer ever since Gary Chalk's WD article "All the Nice Dwarfs Love a Sailor" (or whatever it was titled).  I expect to keep at it for awhile, I'll stop by for a pint if nothing else.

Oh, those are some beautiful pictures there, mate.  Which is your ship? I recognize a couple of them....

BTW, I have created the Seahammer Rules forum and the Orc Pirate Army Book Update forum here:

There isn't much there yet, but I have my plans in motion.

Ah, that one looks good!  It has a nice forecastle, a quarter deckand the poopdeck.  Any chance you could take some close-up shot of that vessel, sir?  I seem to recognize several bits and pieces from a Weapons and Warriors ship in the OS Ferlangen (if I am not mistaken - lanterns, figurehead, masts, railing/wheel on the poopdeck).  I would also love to see those cannons down by the waterline....

Looking good, mates!  Also, WarbossKurgan posted some house rules on the Seahammer site on Da Warpath, and I know they are posted here as well.  Just helps to know where the resources are stored, you know.

Well. I kinda chopped it up (again) a couple of months ago.  I was tired of being outclassed by the newer ships my friend had built.  (Larger carrying capacity for crew) So I expanded the poopdeck.  And then I bought the Pearl and then...

The reason that the Ferlangen looks like Weapons and Warriors is that it is a W&W ship cut in half and elevated on 2" of pink foam.  The cannons are W&W as well just nestled permanently in their gun deck.

Holy crap I found this awesome thread.  I've recently been thinking of starting some new armies (vamps and Bretonnians), so I though yay Zombie pirates.  I remember having this cool ghost ship when I was younger so I started digging around for it, but instead I found 4 sweet ships.  One which is a cool pirate ship from long ago and 3 life boats that are perfect for a crew of about 10.

So I have begun my trek into Sea Hammer using the General's Compendium's rules along with WBK's rules on Da Warpath.  So far the fleet of my Empire consists of:

The Fleet

1 Medium Ship

1 Small Ship

1 Small Ship

1 Small Ship

total: 1025 points.

What rulesets do you guys use.  And what does your current fleet look like.
Stats this year

Dwarves
W6 L2 D2

Greenskins
W1 L3 D0

Empire
W3 L1 D0

Daemons
W4 L0 D0

Ahoy Grodi!

I've got 2 Large ships, 2 mediums and 1 small. I generally fight in groups of 2.  1 Large, 1 small or 1 medium, 1 small.  The small ship will hold 1 gun + crew and 25 other models.  The Black Pearl toy can cram around 92 models on the main decks and fighting tops.  For large and medium ships we put the guns below decks to free the main deck for boarding parties.

This link shows the biggest battle we've tried so far
 http://s218.photobucket.com/albums/cc193/p...%20vs%20Empire/

We've played by the General's Compendium rules since they came out.  Although since CiM we've been trading house rules with WBK and his Flame On! lads.

I think lots of small ships is a good option.

However there is a duff link for Ainsty - who are now part of Old Crow

is a page with lots of 'dock' stuff.

Warhammer Historical are releasing a new rules system called "Trafalgar". It's for 1:1200 scale boats set in the "age of sail"(?). Apparently the game is simple enough for large fleet action but detailed enough for exciting single-ship action too.

I just thought you guys ought to know. Although I have a sneaking suspision that this has already been discussed before, but erhaps not in "detail".
You, sir, command my respect for showing this amount of testicular fortitude!
