Skaven Plague Furnace
« on: February 11, 2010, 09:07:33 PM »
True to the usual character of Skaven warmachines, the Plague Furnace can cause as much damage to the owning player as his opponent.

I just didn't realize how much damage I might sustain during the "assemble the model phase."

This thing has so many spikes on it, it's nearly impossible to avoid stabbing yourself multiple times while cleaning mould lines & assembling it. Really, it's essentially a spiked ball, hanging from a spiked wheel, which is suspended from a spiked arch, and is swung by spike covered crew pulling on a spike covered chain, all of which is mounted on a spiked platform rolling on spiked wheels.

I think when I paint it, I will give it a nice, splattered wash of red in honor of all the blood that was shed while putting it together.

Call me a nutter  but do you see a beggar/homeless/bum with a bag on the stick on the part in the down left corner?

Just in case you don't get what I mean.

Ha. As soon as I read that, I spotted it.

Not only that, but I woke up sick this morning. The Plague Furnace is a Clan Pestilens machine.

Coincidence? I think not.

I'm looking for some painting advice. I've got to get this thing done by next Saturday, for a tournament. I've already submitted my list, so the Furnace is in. I've started painting the wood & metal bits already...

...actually, let me stop right there for a minute, in case there are any other ::heretic:: skaven players ::heretic:: here. Don't follow GW's instructions for assembly/painting. Neither the ones in the box, nor on their web page. The assembly is correct, but if you want to be able to get a brush to all the places that need paint, you should wait for a huge portion of the assembly until the last minute. I followed the web page advice, and it makes it a PITA to paint. Back to the question...

...

I've got to paint all the fumey bits. They're shown on the GW figure as being green. Sort of warpstoney. That's fine. I get that, and it looks eerie. However, one issue with my army. My Pestilens contingent, The Brotherhood of the Red Pox, looks like this...

...and I fear that red and green will look a bit... er, too much in the Christmas spirit. Maybe not. Maybe I am worrying about nothing, and the contrast will look good. Not sure. I've got a couple of alternative ideas. What do y'all think?

Green (GW)
Blue-green
Yellow
Red/Orange

Thanks for any input!

Great. I have done the partial assembly according to the site as well. *grumble*

The GW site says to "wash the whole chassis with liberal use of Delvan Mud." Is there a special way to apply paint that expresses hatred for god and America, and love for terrorists? Should I be using a recycled, all-natural brush? Should I tax my neighbor to pay for it? I'm a bit lost here. Maybe some of the Europeans can help me out, since you're all communists, right?

 :engel:

Seriously, I think I used a half bottle of Delvan Mud on this and it's still going to need more washing to darken it down. I think I started with too light a color brown. :| If I could just dip the whole thing in a large bucket of Delven Mud... three times... I've be set.

If I were to do it all over again...

I would leave both the front and back platform off (I left the back one off, but glued on the front one) and I would leave all the wheels off. I would paint all of that up separately.

On the other hand, I glued the arches to the top of the big stone things and that's working fine. There is still enough movement in the plastic to put the hinge/wheel piece in there.

To darken it... Maybe spray a very, very light coat of black primer and repaint with a darker brown?

I decided to give the red-green one a try first. Not sure I'm happy with it so far. These are WIP photos. Getting nervous, I only have a couple days to finish it!

Looking at it compared to the photo above, it looks like I might need to blend the green into the red fumes a bit. Which means blending the red further back into the black & grey fumes behind it (hidden a bit by the side of the arch.)  :|

First off, nothing to be nervous about, you could field it as is and people would compliment you on it I bet.    It's coming along very well.

My opinion is that the red looks like fire though, instead of fumes.  I liked the green-blue thing you did in photoshop.
