The white is great definitely, but I really like that reddy brown leather colour.

Welcome back!

Thanks chaps!

The white is basecoated GW Pallid Wych Flesh, washed with a dilute AP Soft Tone, layered with PWF, VMC Off-White and extreme edge highlighted with pure white (white is white, but I use the Scale75 white)

As for the leather, I've recently found Army Painter's "Chaotic Red" in my paint box, which I used here. It's the perfect deep, slightly desaturated red. That was basecoated, washed with a dilute AP Strong Tone, layered with CR and highlights achieved by mixing in some GW Cadian Fleshtone. Apparently "buttery leather" is in as a fashion trend for 2020, that's the kind of look achieved here. I do like the result.

Yes I own too many paints...

I should have the next member of the troupe finished in a day or so, so more posts soon 8-)

Here's the next member of the Greatsword unit. (Annoyingly the pic was marred by fluff!) Could be a unit champion or just a guy with a more ornate Zweihander.

Here's the nascent unit, up to a whole 2 minis.

Few touchups needed on these boys and then I'll crack on to soldier #3.  :smile2:

That model really shows off your skill at painting white.

Beautiful.

I needed to take a break from the pain in the butt that was painting the banner (apparently, mechanical pencil takes no fewer than 20 coats to paint over) so I dug around and pulled out this Master Engineer that first cropped up in an earlier post (check page 1 -- he was WIP in a box in the garage for no less than 5 1/2 years!)  Well, here he is, needing a name:

I couldn't quite get the camera to focus on his lighting rod in the left hand. Whilst this chap was built from the steam tank kit, he was originally posed to be in prime position to set off cannon touchfuses. I assumed his rod was some kind of heated coals carrier for that purpose, so I painted a sort of firey glow in the head of the eagle rod. You can kind of see it, however finding a good picture proved impossible.

I'll have more progress pics on the Reikland unit in a few days' time.

A new member joins the (for now) Reikland Five:

And joining the squad...

He needs a few touchups (I forgot to paint the straps at the back of the knees, classic :D) and then it's onto the wip banner and carrier.
More progress soon...

Starting to come along nicely! Really love how this looks

How is it working for you panting 1 mini at a time (welll it seems like your doing that anyway, maybe alternating 1 on 1?)

@StealthKnightSteg: Yes, painting these minis 1 by 1 for now. I get distracted very easily, and having a big pile of half-finished minis would really demotivate me. Most of the minis on page 1 of this log haven't progressed much, so tt's much more fun to start almost from a clean slate with a unit.

Anyway whilst the banner kicks my ass (I tried painting some detailing, and only got myself into a bad position there; I might have to cut the banner off, and reglue it later) -- a few days ago I had one of the old Captain(?) sculpts arrive off that certain auction website. I've been liking the Reikland colours so here he is:

Huge fun to paint this one, and has been one of my favourite sculpts since seeing it in a WD many, many years ago. So to have my own and painted up is a nice accomplishment! No doubt he'll lead the Greatswords to battle, or go rebloodening his sword by himself if he's feeling extra brave.

Hope to have the banner finished and the unit presentable by the start of next week!

Apologies for the delay in posting again but I have been very sick with a cold this week.

Whilst the banner for the Greatswords is getting there it's still not ready to show off. In a mild fever delirium I started something else!
The last few days I've spent coughing and painting this chap:

Need to tidy up the base rim and the paint I splotched on his wrist...  :icon_rolleyes:

And a closeup on the scythe, I really like how the skull turned out:

See you soon with the next update (and a hopefully healthier me!)

Thanks Zyg!

The mini was primed white as usual. Then the outer robe was basecoated in GW Barak-Nar Burgundy. I mixed in gradual amounts of VMC Prussian Blue to get the shade colour and painted it directly into the recesses -- I also thinned it and applied it as a glaze to the sleeves several times to build up a transition. Then the robe was successively highlighted by mixing GW Dechala Lilac into the basecoat colour gradually and applying to the relevant areas. The lightest point highlights are pure Dechala Lilac.

The inner robes are the old Foundation paint Hormagaunt purple, shaded with a dark red wash and highlighted with a bit of GW Slaanesh Grey. And the trim is some Screamer Pink mixed with white for highlights (also used this colour for the roses and the symbols at the edge of each robe corner.)

I bought the 4-pack of wizards from GW recently, so expect some more arcane offerings in the future  :icon_cool:

@errantgamer,

Thanks for the walk-through. My next question is, how long did it take.

I'm asking because I've recently started my first experiments with glazing. It's fast on some ways, but slow in others. Sorta not yet settled with a new technique, and need something to lean on. :-)

Not too long. Painting the robe took about an hour, but I'm pretty confident with these things.

There are probably a ton of ways to glaze up blended colour. I found learning how to do it it was helpful to practice building up blends with the GW or AP washes. Just thin them down with a little bit of water, load up the brush and then wipe it off on a piece of tissue or a thumbnail so the brush isn't flooded, and practice painting in the colour transition. Once you're comfortable doing that you can thin down regular paints to a similar consistency and carry out the same technique.

There must be some good tutorials on YouTube, but unfortunately I haven't seen any to share!
