I'm also hesitating with what I should be doing on the highest levels (which is flat atm).
I'm thinking I should build a wooden structure kinda like an outpost sort of thing. Yes? no?

Add some rocks, pile of stone and such (things you see around an open mine). Maybe some rails? Or a primitive crane? Or both?

Small update, the project goes on really slowly. I was very ill last week, thus not touching the piece at all. My sleep schedule has also been messed with so I end up being tired most of the time.
Adding to that the fact that school takes away time and a lot of energy.
One week left for it, should be fine, but it will feel rushed to me :s

I haven't taken any wips lately, so just so you see where I'm at it.
Better than I thought tho, the ground/upper floor details and final touches are lef ton my to-do list.
With and without flash

Hmmm looking good, on top you do need a camp for the workers etc etc, someplace to sleep, eat, etc, etc. Tents?

*watches*
Then make three times that. It should be enough for half the roof Glue
You could certainly amass quite a collection of testicles

Yes I'll work on that. So many good ideas have been thrown at me, but  a bit too late :(

So the project is done...without being done. The group build ends tonight, so I post the pictures now with everything assembled.
To be honest I really feel I rushed it, so it's probably very visible. And lost of things I couldn't implement in time sur as the highest floor, ground floor which is way too flat, not enough details, I wanted to have light effects as well....
Big ideas....out of my grasp maybe. I'll work on it some more during next few days, to try and push it where I initially wanted it to be. And I'll paint the poly from the first layer black because it really pops out and looks mean.
Horrible quality of pics because it's night time :(

The story about this:
A small group of dwarves fell upon a wierd stone they had never seen before. It was blacker than the night. As they digged a bit deeper, they saw it was part of a bigger structure, thus they began digging and going down what would then become a cliff. As they went lower and lower, they needed ways to get back up. So they made wooden structures at certain intervals to be able to get back to ground level.
After months of digging, it seems they have finally uncovered the whole structure, 4 giant pillars. A strange and evil force surounds them, and a red glow still flows through the stone.

Nice story and nice build!  :::cheers:::

My suggestion is that you put some of the red glow on the nearby stones and structures as they would be lit by the red globes. This will make the scene more reallistic, and provide an ambience.

You can try to combine the grey that you used for the stone with the red that you used for the glow and do the dry brush proces  gradually, giving more intensity the closest rocks.

I've done something like that for my magic portal if you wanna check  it.

Yeah I planned on doing that. Thanks for the tips and your own scenery for inspiration!

Ok so I'm going to work on this build in conjunction with another contest that might go up on a french website.
The idea is that you have to make a table of at least 40x40cm where several things have to appear:
fauna and flora of the place
something like a statue, or symbol,
and a gateway for creatures from the nexus.

So I once saw a great piece of art, and totally loved it, and decided to use it as an inspiration for this piece.
the art:

But for the group build I'll only do the flat part:
the ruined buildings, trees and the giant pumpkin statue as a celebration for Halloween.
The idea is that the mysterious creatures from the Nexus appeared out of no where, so the gate sprouted out of the earth, and destroyed a nearby village, which is now abandoned.
They are celebrating Halloween is this ghost town.

Here's my sketch:

EDIT:
First try for the pumpkins.
I'm quite happy with the result as I was expecting something a lot worse.
I'll try to add some texture with a rock or something similar

Thanks for all the replies...
Finally time for an update.
There has been a change of plans... Major changes actually.
There is a "contest" on another website that lasts for 3 months. So considering I'd have finished most of the piece I decided I'd expand the original idea. I'm making a gaming table 180x120 cm in 30x30 boards.
I have almost finished what will be shown for this build (all that was in the original sketch):
2 ruins, center with huge pumpkin, walls and stuff.
I got a bunch of things to work on still but considering I started taking this seriously 3 days ago I feel I can make it.
Here's where I'm at right now

Everything is brown grey :l homemade tree, my first, so it has to be reworked, I have to get better at making a barkskin texture.

So I've had a few hiccups these days, so to get back on track, I made a planning so I can finish this project in a few months.
It's going to be pretty hard, with school and the exam period... But it's doable right?
It'll also give me and people looking in here, an idea of where this is headed.
I'll be doing 3 updates a week: tuesday/ thursday/ sunday.
So it's going to start the 2nd!
(it's in french so... might not be that useful lol)

So, here's the first update, a day late. Non peinted ofc.
Another bunch of trees home made, they are way better than my first, but some of the shapes are sausagy... But it was fun, even though the fimo clay was old and dry. Someone gave it to me so I have no idea how long he's had it for. But it's better than the clay which didn't even held on to the wire...
The statue isn't final, I have to find a mini. And my hot wire cutter died, so I didn't finish the fountain.
I'm not sure whether to buy a new hand held one, invest in a bigger one or make my own

Hello,
after a few months of being gone I think it is time to get back to terrain making. So to start it off I decided to make a recap of the project I was working on

So I started off with the size of the table, which is about 120x240 cm divided in 30x30 parts

Then I started off what was supposed to be for a competition, a set of ruins and some more stuff. No need to say I didn't make it in time for the competition

So I did actually work a little on it over the last few months but I wasn't in any shape to actually post it online. So here's where I'm at now:

Also I'm trying to find someone with a camera to start doing video tutorials so that people can see my workflow and hopefully help me improve more. If anyone lives in Brussels and has a cam they don't need...
Feel free to give me tips on my work btw
