so i decided after having most of the khorne mortals done to begin my new project. . . stirlanders! the army list will be posted soon but will revolve heavily around spearmen, swords men and free company detachments, the army is not going to include any handguns but only crossbows and a single cannon. flagellants and a gold wizard will also be in this army. so without further ado some WIP pics of the units, no bases though i am starting them on 20mm then moving to the regimental bases for easier use.

Dude good job, kinda makes me want to paint one of my unpainted regiments as stirlanders.... the hillbilly 88th or something

I really like this. The dirty green and yellow makes me think of poverty and war against the undead on some muddy field. Troops lying dead half burried in the mud, and others slipping on them. A fire wizard trying to encourage the troops "Stand firm men, that wich is dead may still burn!" (anyone know where i got that from?). I would love some muddy sort of base on these. Keep it up!

I love the picture you're referring to Wolfenbaum. The old army book had such great artwork.

a muddy base would look nice i agree any suggestions on how to build?

Have never made muddy bases. But what comes to my mind is something ike this: Smear some modelling putty on the base, not to gently trying to make it look like mud. Paint this in some dark brown with some minor highlight. I would then paint this with gloss varnishand to makt it look wet. Finally glue small turfs of static grass here and there, but not to much.

Could that work?

It's a good idea but a little unfeasible as i have very little green stuff and 250+ models to paint for this army, what about a dark brown sand coat that has been inked with the dry static grass that stands straight up?

If you are going to matte varnish the models I would say to ink the base after you do so so as it will keep a wet look.

That will work for the amount of models that you have going....you realy can't spend to much time basing on a semi-horde army like empire.

try mixing your ground work material with a little white glue, add some brown paint to the glue and a little static grass until you have a semi thick consistency and then use knife blade to apply it to your bases, it is fast and effective, when dry you can ad some gloss varnish to spots to make it look extra wet, make sure you put a little on the lower legs and hems of robes, but do it sparingly because it is very easy to overdo it. Didn't end up trying out the bases but i did get to finish another model, My Gold Wizard! i was so psyched to paint this guy up and i think he came out pretty good. the gold on his face was disappointing until i gave it a second chestnut ink wash and it got some more depth.

Thats the first that I have seen the word glory while referencing a Stirland army...

Just finished the Command for the Spearmen Unit and i have to say I am quite happy with the result. The unit is currently 15 man strong and soon to be 30 man but before i finish the unit i will do 15 swordsmen starting. . . tommorrow

I like it. I sort of just free handed the banner without any real design in mind, just did what came to me.

Looking great, apart from the mouldlines. Do take the time to clean these up before painting, you'll find it worthwhile.

Yep, I remember to do the ones on the legs but always forget the arms! gaaah! but 'tis the learning process.

@shadowwolf: thanks! I first did 3 lines coming across the face of the drum in my darkest green color and then 3 more (evenly spaced obviously) perpendicular to the first 3. I filled in alternating squares with the darker color and then just put less and less of the lighter colors while only showing a teeny bit of the previous layer. Then I repeated the process with the stirlander "dirty" yellow mix I use. simple and easy to do!

Um...I really like the colors of this Stirland army...specially the dirty yellow. The champion is a improve over the original...I never liked that head and the one you have used suits very well.

Just a minor comment: The letters on the banner are bit too small...hard to read 'stirland'...

Maybe for the hair,

some of the blond guys' hair looks the same as your uniform yellow... maybe add a bleached bone highlight to their hair as it will differenciate between the two....

Why aren't you on the Back table helping out the Stirlanders... they are taking some punishment.

Nice going, a bit too much ink for my taste, but it works.

For the muddy bases I would make a mix on the base. For example do 2/3 of the base with sand and when that is dry the other part with PVA/wood glue and paint/ink that a brown. It makes for a real mud pool.

What you could do then is make a mudstream flowing through the entire regiment.
