Studio One Two's stuff
« on: July 16, 2012, 08:40:28 AM »
Hello everyone,
after seeing Shadowwolf's awesome stuff on deviantart, I thought I could join these forums and post stuff as well.
I make scenery with my gf, and am currently making Empire-ish buildings. Well they're for humans is all I know for now.
I'll keep all my stuff in one thread, so it'll be kinda like a sketchbook, so people can see our progress and don't have to search through dozens of threads if they ever want to look for something
We have a blog if you're interested: http://studio1two.blogspot.be/
or simply a deviantart page, which you can feel free to watch! : http://wannagotoheaven.deviantart.com/

Nice work!

Cheers, wanna!  :::cheers::: You've got quite a collection of nice buildings too! Gotta love the effort put into the wood textures and the good looking moss roofs! I never managed to get such roofs right...

Welcome and I hope to see more!  :smile2:

He's selling loveeeeeeeee and kisses! :D

We're finally back after some holidays and more health problems :(. The houses we drew on foam board have now all been built, except for the one with the interior.

Storage house:

A base and supporting pillart haven't been added yet. They will once the stone base is painted.

Merchant house:

The green nets didn't come out so well. But it was a test afterall

House:

Barn:

The house and the barn fit together. They can be used separately but they point is that they stay grouped:

For those curious, the house+barn come form this drawing (not by me):

Apparently there's a few things missing, like the chimneys and the shutters.

Thanks guys

WIP of merchant house.
Haven't painted for over 2 months so I need your input on this.
The walls have no texture so it's a real challenge for me.
left pic is without flash, right is with (it's more accurate with).
Not sure about the wall colours combined with the wood.

Wood is dark brown, brown, and beige.
Still needs details ofc but i need advice for the overall feel

OFF TOPIC:
Hi everyone,
First of all I'd like to thank everyone following me. I've never expected anyone to follow me on DA, and haven't realized until now how great it makes me feel to have someone consider that what I do is worth following.
It also helps me try and get more stuff out. But lately I've had a hard time doing that.
Here's why: I have major personal life issues and am doing this give away to try and get back on track.
This give away has NOTHING to do with scenery and models. It's only here to help me get rid of my life's biggest problem.
See I am, sadly enough, an addict. I'm not going to go in any detail but I'm addicted to videos games.
So to try and git rid of this problem once and for all (Have been struggling for the past 6 years with it) I'm giving away my World of Warcraft account.

I'm giving it away here, because I know that most people into Warhammer and such are into fantasy in general (Magic the gathering/wow/ ect.)

So here's what I offer:
A eu World of Warcraft account with lots of stuff on it, game time, diablo 3 (cuz it's linked to the bnet account).
I just have one condition: you must be new to the game. I can't check anything but I'd rather not have you ask the account if you already play.
If you have a friend who's into it and wants to play have him ask me.
Depending on the replies I'll either give the first come first served or make a pool.
Final transaction will be done through pm or mail.

Have a good evening everyone

WIP of a warehouse.
When I see the picture the painting really feels super messy. I don't like it. Also there's are colors all over the place. And the wood.... Practice inc for sure
The building is finished, still missing: base/supporting beams/details.

In a photo, that last one looks gritty and real to me, but I don't know how much it pulls off that look at closer scrutiny. Good work I say.

Your house's look very well done  I'm not able of producing something like that...

Though, I have minor thing: I'm missing some chimney's on the house's.

This might sound like the worst excuse, but I keep forgetting about chimneys! Every time I make plans, I have to write "Add chimneys" or else I forget. But ofc I use plans for a basic guide line and forget about the chimneys during the building process ha

Finished warehouse. Overall happy with it even though the paint job is pretty terrible.
Redid the stones from the previous version. Better but not good enough.

Would redo:
the wood. I can't paint wood at all.
the walls. The look like half painted half rushed walls
The stones, colors are too washed out
Roof is a bit meh.

Made from:
balsa wood
polystyrene for the foundations
Depron for the base (its the foam thats used for foam board)
Foam board for the walls of the second floor
cardboard for roof and tiles
Hand made barrels (first time I did that, made we wanna learn to sculpt so bad, I mean what some ppl can do on such small scales is just beyond me)
Wooden crates

Merchant house finished.
Quite pleased with this although there's still a ton of things to be improved. Especially the stone and the roof.
The walls came out rather nice imo, especially considering they're flat, with no texture added to them (no filler or plaster).
The stains can also be reworked, they always come out so dark and pop out way too much.

Major problem of mine is having shadows and highlights. This makes the roof rather flat looking.

Crits and comments are most welcome!

PS: it randomly ended up being a pottery. I had to write a name and draw something... need finer brushes for sure
PPS: could someone guide me to take better pics? Not much of a photogapher

WIP of a new project. It's a contest with the theme artefact.
I wanna be totally unoriginal and make a big excavation site where they dig an long lost eldar webgate. It probably doesn't make sense with WH lore but it's mostly for fun.

Help me decide which design I pick. There's gonna 4, half dug up, 1 or 2 broken. They will have the same design with slightly different details (thus me only picking one).

I'll probably use the others to make webgates someday...

Your buildings are really nice. Would love to see a 'town' shot of them all together some time.

Loving the buildings. I've been looking at doing something similar myself as I want to build a display for my army at some point so it's nice to see how others tackle the building of the ...err... buildings.

As for the thing with WoW, I know how you feel. I stopped playing about 2 1/2 years ago then got dragged back into it when cataclysm was released then stopped again 18 months ago. This time for good. I'd been playing since vanilla release day and life is generally much better now I don't feel the need to turn the pc on as soon as I get home or play for the whole night grinding towards something. Good move trying to get out and good luck :)

Back to the warhammer... keep up the good work!

Good work, although you can improve your red roof by correcting something.

It appears that you used a bright and saturated  red, and then dry-brushed on top.  However the first layer must be such that it remains as a shade.
This is why layer must be done with an unsaturated version of red  for example a mix of red+gray or red+black or red+dark blue (my favorite).

Then the more saturated red goes on top, leaving the shady areas with the previous color.  You may still dry-brush on top to produce your favorite effects.

Te main point is to avoid using brilliant saturated colors in the shade areas as they look akward.

Yeah that totally makes sense. Thanks a ton I'll remember to mix my colors more instead of using them right out the tube.

Sooo, the excavation project has officially started. I thought I could try my best and have sort of a tutorial by having a lot of step by steps too have a feel of my workflow for this project.

Getting the overall layout of the piece. Where everything will end up:

I then start tackling the mountain side. Lots of foam uncarved:

Once carved you get this:

Then I'm starting with all the levels going down. Starting with the bottom one:

I then move on the the next ones:

I originally had only 4, but quickly realized I needed more levels, so here's the final result, with the half buried eldar wings:

Looking good so far. You need to hollow out some caverns on the "sliced" edges of the piece, and put Skaven, Dwarfs or Goblins in them.

Why not have all three? They could be having a tunnel fight with the archaeologists' guards!

Looks like a great idea and a lot of work - a whole mountainside excavation - cool!

To be honest that's a super awesome sick idea. But I'm not sure I can fit it in the piece. I don't want the mountain side to be detachable, have separate levels. It would make it overly complicated for me. If I'd have 10yrs of experience I'm sure I would have done it

Thanks, great idea but too hard for me :(

Sooo I've got a big announcement to make. I've started my new studies which means I have a lot less time for terrain now ( in addition to starting to run 1hr a day+ other sports again). So no more full time terrain making. Makes me cry a bit inside but I knew it was coming.
For those curious, I'm studying germanic languages (dutch+english) to become a teacher. But considering my current end goal has things to do with terrain I'm not stopping anytime soon with that.

Without further ado, I'll say what I've done recently with the project.

So as I finished the main structure I had to start and detail it. SO I've done that the last 3 days.
Starting at the bottom

Here's how I do my support structures

 Slowly I move up

Add the second "floor" there

Up to the top!

General view of the thing right now (better quality than previous too)

Close up of the top:

What's left to do:
-add the diagonal support beams for the upper level (they support the levels and lean against the mountain side)
-get the dirt texture on the ground floor
-do the lader for the 2 storey level and cut a hole in the 2nd storey.
-Add all the details that will "pull the dirt" up, like levels, ropes and things that could possibly bring the stuff that's being dug to the top
-Add the eldar wings, detail them and allow them to have a balance system
-flesh out the mountain, give texture to the sides that have been cut for the convenience of the excavation
-Put layers of filler on the mountain the give it the required texture
-add smaller details like barrels, bags, tables, boxes (using molds and the like [1st I'll be doing that])
-Paint it all up
-stuff I forgot (help me out here)

I'm also hesitating with what I should be doing on the highest levels (which is flat atm).
I'm thinking I should build a wooden structure kinda like an outpost sort of thing. Yes? no?

See you all soon
