Which tends to beg the question why?

What roll would such an engineer play in your army?

Couse I like universality. My build will help me in many different matchups. He can redirect chargers, defend machines or even get in unit and make a challenge to Big Nasty Guy.

The only reason to take an Engineer is to prop up a warmachine and more in particular the HVG. For that purpose he does need any magical items and for any other, he is useless and a waste of points.

While I think that could be a bit strong I would like Mr. Carloff to go into more detail as to how his strange Engineer works

It is a build which can do a few things (as he said) fairly well - but not very well, and there are other elements of the army which could do better for less. But, it is a decent option to do multiple things. And, it is a sweet model :)

An Engineer is 65 points - spend anymore, and it's probably misspent.

You can take the 5+ ward save against fliers if you like - but it's still pretty pointless.

Their statline is equivalent to the Warrior Priest, Captain or Witch Hunter. If you need to kit someone up to do a job - use one of them.

I'm assuming the OP is a bit of a fluff bunny :)

I occasionally equip my engineers. Pigeon plucker pendant can be useful. Also the ruby ring could be a worthwhile investment, it may allow you to get rid of those pesky war machine hunters .

He didn'r mention this was for tourney play or anything. Some people still play for fun and in that case there is no harm in taking sub-optimal choices, whether for fluff or variety...

Here's an engineer build I've been meaning to try out. Before the most recent book I quite often took a unit of 5 or 6 knights as war machine protection. I'd keep them at the back near a war machine battery and charge down anything that came near them. I've a plan to do this again if I go for an artillery-heavy army, and add a mounted engineer with the terrifying mask of eeee so that they can force the war machine hunters to run away. As the knights stay with the war machines so does the engineer. Trouble is I've not done an artillery-heavy army yet with the new book, just not sure it's worth it any more.

I sometimes sit down to kit-up my engineers, but I always end up realizing that for those 100+ points I am spending on a half-whit with a long gun, I could have a level two wizard. Then I take the wizard and go about my business.

Let me try ...  :::cheers:::

I'm kinda ETC player, but sometimes i want to make ideas what breakout of standart build. It's really annoying to play vs standarty lists with ETC composition. And then the new book come out I got the Sign - VHS Engineer on Robohorse of Doom with Deathbirds!  :biggriin:

My list is something contains 2 bricks of 40 halberds with cheap WP's and 2 units of Demigryphs. After first games i found that new Empire can't fight hordes in same old good way. And there is no more character for VHS. So...

My engineer can:
Give a reroll to cannon in game vs Dwarf there this so important.
Can possible harras enemy blocks with Pigeons. I know that 5+ is not so trusty, but i'm kinda luck with dices.
In games with nasty characters he can join the needed unit and try to challenge them.
He sometimes work in pair with my horse captain and Griffon general.

The most ugly thing is test for loosing movement... I failed it twice in same game... but it doesn't mean much at that point of the game.

Excuse me for my language skills.  :eusa_wall:

You do realise that if the Engineer supports a warmachine (which must be declared at the beginning of the Shooting Phase), he cannot use the pigeons (or do anything else) that phase?

Sure mate. I use his rerolls only vs Dwarfs or Ironblaster.

Really? I could use his rerolls on every artillery piece I have multiple times each turn.
But that might be me getting misfires quite regularly.

I currently use two engineers in my list:

1. Naked one for hellblaster (duh, can't go without him)
2. Pigeons, Charmed shield. Works as mortar and has a charmed shield if pigeon gets confused. 90 points is kinda of not to much and not cheap. I try to lunch pigeons from archer bunker so the pigeon doesen't kill much if he returns.
