So... What did I miss?
« on: June 04, 2016, 11:23:11 PM »
According to the forum, it's been about 4 and half years since my last post... ... Ooops. Life happens and other things come up.

In the mean time, it seems like WHFB was killed off. That sucks. I started gaming in my teens about 20 years ago. I didn't start with WHFB, but it was one of the earliest rulesets I had (3rd edition, maybe?). I liked the empire because pretty much anything I wanted was available. I wasn't a huge fluff junkie, but the backstory was detailed enough for me to carve out my own little niche. I based my empire army around the theme of the colleges of magic with different units tied to individual colleges of magic. I've popped in and out of WHFB gaming over the years and just grabbed whatever the latest version was and picked up where I left off. Naively, I always assumed WHFB would be there for me whenever I wanted to drop in. Guess not. I've briefly looked at Age of Sigmar and it doesn't really appeal to me - not trying to start a debate about that game, honest.

So what are people up to these days? It looks some have continued with the old rules or a modified version of them. Those of us in small-ish places never really had much WHFB action even when there was a company supporting the game. I expect there were be virtually nothing from a fan based ruleset.

I really didn't play all that much, but I liked the painting/modelling aspect of hobby. I gamed from time to time, but the majority of my time/interest was spent in the painting part. Now I find it hard to justify that without a game to use the models in.
I'm mostly just trying to figure out where I want to go from here, so I'd be interested hearing how other people have reacted to the demise of WHFB. Have you moved on to another system? (which one?) Are you sticking with WHFB in some form? Have you pretty much given up on wargamming? Or what? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks for not deleting my account,

There are probably subtle differences between what Wally wants to know and yourself, but I would recommend reading this thread--

Well if you don't like AoS there are some good options out there.

Kings of War is a fun game to play. its block infantry just like warhammer, GW models are basically all compatible with it.
Its not as complicated as something like 8th edition but in a good way. It speeds up gameplay alot which means trying to convince a friend to play is alot easier.

The 9th Age is an alternative. You can download the rules from their website. Its very balanced. A few units in armybooks seem redundant but that is because it was designed so players could use all their models from Warhammer and a few other games.

And lots of people have been branching out to smaller fantasy games. Frostgrave, mordhiem, etc...

The last year has been a bit of a lull but its shaping up to be a possible golden age of tabletop gaming for fantasy.

Hi there.

Yeah, the 9th Age is cool and I'm still playing 6th edition with my friends. Warhammer Fantasy seems to experience a kind of reneissance of sorts, with TW: Warhammer which is really good, Mordheim, which is great and other stuff, like Warhammer: Quest for PC's and the upcoming Manowar video game. Then there's still the Mordheim community, so the fact that GW offed WFB dosen't really matter that much, except maybe that some of the models may be harder to get.

My advice for you is to try out the 9th Age, and maybe play a few skirmish games, using Frostgrave or Mordheim rules. I've discovered myself that when fans took care of WFB, it only proved to be beneficial to the game itself. That's just my two cents.

So you need a game to support your hobby, even if you don't game that much? And you wish that game to be some sort of fantasy battles, with many troops, heroes and big units?

Then the most important thing is to locate those people in your vicinity who could play a game of your liking somewhat regularly. In that regard, it was the same it always was. :)

For me, that has meant learning the basics of Kings of War (Mantic Games) and The 9th Age (massively supported fan-iteration of 8th ed Warhammer Fantasy), and rehearse my understanding of the 7th and 8th ed's. All have given me impetus to paint more, and I'm getting semi-regular games with most (not the 8th, since the meta went totally T9A here). I might be looking into Oldhammer (3rd ed) this summer.

I think the fantasy player base was diminishing already since mid-7th ed, and the 8th ed didn't solve this problem. (Refer to my data on the forum discussion.) And now there's some sort of competition between pure 8th ed, two or three individual fan-iterations, T9A, Oldhammer and Kings of War.

I'd say the answer, as of now, is to learn the basics of several of these systems/iterations, and play with people who like one or more of them. In time, you'll be able to agree with your friends on what you like, and if you like to participate in the larger scene. That will eventually narrow your games to two or three at most. I don't think that's too much trouble, if it keeps you interested in the main thing, the hobby. :)

The destruction of all that was Warhammer is a bummer. Well, not all, but most of it :P

I agree with Zygmund though: find some like-minded fellows and agree on the system you'll use. I've had a couple of games of 8th edition, but a couple of days ago I spoke to an old elementary school / university classmate and we are thinking of giving 6th/7th edition a go. That means that I won't have access to the new and shiny magic wagons, but hey, what can you do... Not like they're all painted up anyway :icon_lol: :icon_lol: :icon_lol: And we always want to play with painted armies, unpainted models usually get some sort of restriction modifiers as a incentive after a couple of games to encourage painting. We want to give everyone a chance to field models that they want and try out new stuff, but after a game or two of seeing the same model(s) unpainted, the pressure is on :D
