How do Steel Fist figures measure up against GW?
« on: August 27, 2025, 04:02:19 PM »
Heyhey,

Of course Steel Fist look like a dead-sure place to get your Empire figures from. However, does anyone of you have any experience in putting their lovely sculpts next to chonky GW sculpts, specifically knights, but also infantry?

thanks!

Ha!  Not sure.  Believe I have some Steel Fist renaissance cavalry, and they're sitting on a storage shelf if i recall.  Don't recall owning any of their infantry, but its been years.  Will check and report back.

Even in same eddition there was a considerable difference in model scales.
6th edition swordsmen/halberdiers vs handgunners and spearmen was probably most noticeable.
Most Dogs of War miniatures, especially Leopold's Leopard Company are even smaller, being close to current Perry's Miniatures European Mercenaries 1450-1500.

Cheers.

Yeah, compared to 5th/6th edition state troops and 6th edition knights (mainly the horses really. I assume that those GW plastic horses from the early 90s are more chunky than Steel Fist's?

AFAIK, GW's barded horses are "chunkier" than any historical ones.

I own the Steel Fist foot knights. They have about the same height as the 5th edition plastic empire soldiers and are slightly shorter than the 6th edition metal greatswords. They are all modelled in true scale though, which means they are quite a bit slimmer over all with smaller feet, hands and heads. The same goes for the weapons.

I don't own any horses or mounted knights, but as mentioned here already, they will certainly be slimmer too. If you put them next to your unit of GW Knights of the White Wolf, they would look out of place in my opinion. (But my personal tolerance regarding scale differences is rather low.)

Placing Steel Fist infantry models next to the before mentioned GW Empire infantry might work (more or less), as long as you don't put one of the very chunky 4/5th edition heroes/champions in the unit.

I've always wanted to order Steel Fist renaissance knight (that one with fluted armor and a huge full helm and plumes) and their Doppleganers wearing fluted armors. Sadly GW never does those. Unfortunately the shipping was not something I would shill out.
I would say personally the Perrys' mounted men-at-arms worked really well for me as long as I don't use their default heads. 8th edition style merely exaggerated the heroic scale effect further, so if the head's big enough, you can get the same top heavy effect as them.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I assume Victor's suggestions make sense. With infantry, a bit of scale difference is less of a problem; cavalry probably looks a bit 'wrong'. Shame, because I've been looking for excuses to get Steel Fist stuff ever since they appeared (and I do pike things in 10mm and for a slightly later period already)... maybe I'll have to get their 28mm samurai stuff instead. :P

@Icmiracle: Yeah, those knights look really great for Empire. The perrys mounted Men at Arms probably fit the bill, but I had hoped for something a little flashier / Italian Warsier. :D And I know myself when it comes to plastics - I got so many boxes of plastic stuff in a cupboard and never do anythign with it. :D I mean so far I got my Knights of the White Wolf, plus a new box of Empire knights.... which I guess should do the trick. Nonbody needs more than 15 knights, right? ;)
