Anyone ever tried just giving a BSB and EC just normal armor and weapons and deploying them behind their battle line?

Could save a whole lot of points, would make them more mobile, and would possibly protect them.  You could really save and make the general a normal captain. with the BSB(+ plate for both, GW for general) thats only 145 points).

Just an idea i had been toying with, especially since i have recently gone point-saving crazy.  I hate having to give my characters all sorts of fancy gizmos just to see other characters murder them.

I used to field my general and BSB like this when I first started playing.  Ironically, though, this ends up wasting points in my opinion, because your losing the combat capabilities of both (especially the elector count).

My elector count rarely gets killed.  Give him full plate or Armor of Meteoric Iron and the Holy Relic and make sure the unit he's in has a unit champion to accept challenges that you know your count will lose.  This frees up the count to kill rank and file to help win the combat.  Then, hopefully, the combat will be over by the next turn.  Otherwise, your count may admittedly be in it deep.

Just my experiences with the idea.

I usually hide my wizards behind units or keep them far away from the danger. But otherwise, when it comes to fighter heroes, I can't say I've seen the point in keeping them out of their fellow troops protection (neither mounted nor footed) running around all alone. Actually when I think of it I don't think I've ever done this!
I can see it work with a BSB when keeping him guarded by forwarded troops. But I don't see the point in doing the same with the EC.
To me this solo thing feels like a risky thing (waist of points?!!!) as it's a big risk that the character ends up slaughtered. Single models on flyers on the other hand usually stays alive (unless faced with massive shooting).
But if anyone has any special fighting technique of this (Han)-Solo! thing it would be nice to learn...

This is how i've started using my EC/BSB combo, hanging around they don't get caught up in combat and yet provide the Ld 9and a reroll for break tests. They are hard enough between them to deal with skirmishers and fast cav that gets behind your line, especially with the banner cancelling the out number.

Bigrin is the master of this tactic especially in a low shooting environment.  It is one of the reasons he is so hard to beat.   He realizes that the best use for Empire characters is leadership and depends on his troops to at least hold until help comes for them.  I love the tactic and have started doing it myself along with the mounted Elector Count.  My new character "addiction" is the BSB with Armor of Meteoric Iron and Sword of Might in my Greatswords.  Though I know many of you have used this for years, I've always taken a Pegasus Captain so I had never tried it before.

That BSB combp rocks, he has 3 S5 attacks and a banner, easily capable of taking out skirmishers and fast cav.

Classic character combos.  Since Empire characters are for leadership more than they're for combat, this is a great tactic.  Moving around behind the lines ensures that you can get your character where he needs to be quickly.

The only army that is better at this tactic is Skaven since their characters can sit in the back ranks of units.

Yea that was something that i forgot to mention...the two together actually can make a pretty powerful little auxiliary unit for taking out flankers and such

I used to do the same thing when i started out and guess ill give it another shot
