I've been thinking about the next army to take to a tournament and i've become stuck. Nothing springs to mind as a good visual army. Whilst Ogres are nice they require lots of bodies to do it and it's hard to make large models look so good. Heavy cavalry armies aren't as exciting anymore either but hordes aren't visually nice either. It's very perplexing to decide!

However I have decided to at least finish one of the empire ogres to decide if they are worth finishing. So here he is WIP!

Now obviously the picture flags up a few things I need to change. You can't really see the gaps in the flesh tone when you look at it physically - the flesh change is actually very subtle but it sticks out like a sore thumb here.

Is it worth doing an army of them? Or is a bit mediocre.

Sir Bedevere the Wise

Wow, that is some nice speed painting. I hope that with head start you can make it a lot better.

From the presented ideas, I like the Empire themed Ogres most. It is very amusing to find brutes trying to fit into foppish clothes. Nevertheless I would like to capitalise on your identity crisis theme. May I suggest panda worshipping army? With panda pelts, masks and banners. Probably goblin midgets in white cloaks with black spots. Maybe you could also convert those ugly goblin wolves into not-so-ugly pandas.

Regards,

Bedevere

1,000 point army under the new rules? I thought the new rules were for massive armies and advocated massive units.  Am I mistaken? steveb

ZeroTwentythree

Not entirely. There are some advantages to larger units, but that's not an automatic game winner. I think it's just sort of the "easy" bonus that people are looking at right now, but I suspect that in the long term, although large infantry units have improved, they will not fare that much better than in the current edition. Certainly not to the extent that people are claiming this is the edition of the infantry horde. (Hordehammer?)

Also, since all of the rules (including Steadfast) are essentially scalable, I think small games are just as plausible in 8th as they were in the past few editions.

Mogsam

Turns out my casual 1,000 point tournament is now a casual 2,010 point tournament. Which is significantly more painting!

So new themes at 2,000 points!

Haven't got a clue what army to use. Haven't got any that go up to 2000 points! Might have to make a new one for the whole thing!

  Personally I'd go with ogres.

That's cool.  Not to Empirery, but I can still tell.  Gonna give him state troops shields for gut plates?

Mogsam

He actually has puff and slash trousers but the angle doesn't really show them since it's forward! I'm not planning on using gut plates. They look silly to me. Plus it's overused.

He's just a bull and i'm somewhat out of practice sculpting so i'll knock out a couple more bulls and then move onto the ironguts. Still have a massive tyrant planned. Although Shadowlords has the pose I was planning on using.

Steadfast at all times for cheap troops not much better?

You better get your rulebook changed, because it clearly don't depict 8th properly.

@ Mogsam, nice headstart.

Sir Bedevere, thou art giving away mine secret!  :icon_frown:

I got to know if you got a monopoly on pandas Mog, cause I already have a panda patrol I need to post a pic of.
Dear Friend of Stirland,

Your shoes have been put on backorder. We appreciate your custom.

Hope we are finding you shod,
Stirland

Mogsam

Go for it.

I'm almost tempted to sculpt a panda maneater.

That sounds like a sensible plan.

If I wanted to.

Does mean I have to take maneaters. Which doesn't actually seem that worthwhile anymore. What with psychology being not as effective.

  Sounds good then.

Right, after last year I've learnt to plan ahead with what to make. Don't really want to have to remake a unit because it turns out one sucks. Ironbreakers still suck by the way.

Tyrant. 1 Sword Halfling. 1 Luck Halfling. Great Weapon. Armour of Destiny. 274 - I'm planning on making a somewhat scaled up version of the guy in the link below. But more ogrey. One halfling will be from the Sam & Frodo do Mordor set. Where they wear orc armour. The luck Gnoblar will be the Halfling with the top hat. Because he is awesome.

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440090a&prodId=prod1130373

Slaughtermaster. Halfling Cookbook 225 - Full Wizard cloak and staff. Butchers are too ugly and a stupid concept.

Bruiser. BSB. Armour of 2+ save. 1 Sword Halfling 205 - Lots of heavy empireised armour. Big ass banner and the remaining Sam/Frodo model in orc armour.

6 Ogres. Full Command. Lookout Halfling 265 - I have a platic hobbit somewhere from some set that didn't do very well. Also, totally had 15 points left over from before. Hence all the lookout halflings.

6 Ogres. Full Command. 260

5 Ironguts. Full Command. Lookout Halfling 295 - Ogre greatswords.

9 Halfling Scouts. 54 - The sherrif models.

Scraplauncher. 165 - Mortar? Not sure about this one yet.

Giant. 175 - Foppish hat is required.

Maneater. Cathayan Longsword. Heavy Armour. 90 - Panda? I'm so tempted.

Yes Mog! You have to make a panda with samurai armor and katana. Kick-ass!

I also remember seeing such figure somewhere in the internets. Can anyone verify?

Love the Empire Ogre army concept.  Played around with it myself only long enough to do the Ogre Greatswords.  Amen to the Wizard, not Butcher for spellcasting.     So when do we get to see more?
Let them taste Reikland steel!

What about a conversion of an  Orc Boar Chariot

with a hotpot halfling catapult on top of it?

You will have to extend the platform but it could look awesome  :biggriin:

Mogsam

All models have been ordered. Quick amusing quiz. Which is the most expensive moneywise unit in my army?

It's somewhat ironic.

I'm currently painting Halflings inbetween sculpting a tyrant and will update tommorow. Might have a couple of goes at the tyrant though. Been a while since I sculpted properly.

Yup. Since they need 9 for less panic and more fighting they cost a collective £24. Which is more than everything else since they call come at discounted non direct prices. Even the giant comes in at £20. I'd have an entire unit of them but it's nearly £40 for 20.

Update time!

He's nearing being closer to finished. Unfortunately I did most of the paintjob about a year ago and the paints way too thick but he looks ok. Can be a back ranker.

A WIP halfling. Do I turn his shirt "white" as well as his hat?

Sneak of the newest ogre.
