Empire army color scheme
« on: January 02, 2007, 03:54:09 AM »
I am a 40k player that has seen the light, and I am anxiously waiting my empire army box and codex.  I've been reading some of the excellent posts about the different color schemes of the empire armies.  Before finding this forum, I started working on a paint scheme for my army not realizing or knowing any of the fluff associated with the Empire.  All I have painted is a greatsword champion, and the color scheme I used was hawk turquoise and black with blood red as an accent color.  It looks good, but after reading the colors of the various empire nations, it looks like I totally missed the fluff.  I would love some input about the colors I've chosen, and the appropriateness of playing a empire army color scheme that has no basis in the empire world.

Thanks for the help!

I've not seen hawk turquoise, but I think it's a green color and if so you could make it into hochland :)

They use green and red :P

Good luck :)

The army book will give colour schemes for the main provinces. However, you could make your army a particular sub-section of a state army, such as the defenders of a particular keep, or something. This allows you to create pretty much any colour scheme you choose, and still fit within the existing Empire fluff.

Very true. I was thinking the same thing.

Valmir has it pretty spot on. You can use all types of colours to represent all types of areas of the Empire. I think Turquiose is an interesting choice, and as cheaky said, you could probably pass for Hochland. Although if it is more of a bluish hue, it may be more appropriate to make it Altdorf. As mentioned, the Armybook has a lot if the different province / city colours in it and would really assist you in making a decision as to where your army is from. If you decide that your army is from a less known about township, you can use pretty much any colour to represent this and still be 'with the fluff'.

I suggest you first decide what you want your army to be composed of, and then where in the Empire fits this (not everywhere is rich enough for a cannon battery, not everywhere has a steam tank, some regions are accustomed to fighting undead on a frequent basis, some areas are colder, etc.

Once you have made this decision, look at the relevant colour schemes of that area. If you don't like them (or if you really like the colour scheme you have made) then your army can be (like I said) from a nearby township...

You can always make up a province. I'm goning to do something similar to the old slyvania- Black and lich purple with red bits.

Making up your own province could be a bit tricky, as the territory of the Empire is pretty much all taken up. However, there are many levels below that where a "custom" color scheme could work very well, especially for the household troops of individual nobles or the town guard of some obscure backwater.
I don't know what Caesar thought when he got to the Ides of March
Don't know what Houdini bought when he went to the store
But I sure do miss the eighties

You have black, a sort of blue, and red accents.

There isn't really a province with blue and black as main colours, so I would look for a province with a combination of one of those with your red.

The new book states that most troopers wear 'some' piece of clothing in their provincial colours.
See page 36 - 2nd paragraph under the State Troops heading, and then there is a double page spread of uniform designs on pages 92-93.
The wording suggests that a trooper will wear some indication of his homeland - from doublet and hose or down to a mere ribbon or feather.

If you like the colour scheme you have chosen, and it would certainly stand out, then you could make them represent a town/area from a particular province, and 'one' of your chosen colours could be the link to the main province's colours.

So, for example, if you used the 'red' for your 'sign of allegiance' then you could choose Altdorf (where the sort of blue would tie in even better as already mentioned) or Talabecland, Ostermark, or Hochland.
If you went with the black, you have Nuln or say Averland.

All I have painted is a greatsword champion, and the color scheme I used was hawk turquoise and black with blood red as an accent color.

Well, hawk turquoise is more blue then green if i'm not mistaken, so the most obvious choice for you to say they're from Altdorf (blue and red), and that black is the colour of a certain noble they belong to.

Other choices:

Nuln (black)

Carroburg Greatswords (Red (& black)) => Carroburg lies in Middenland, so you could paint the rest of your army in Middenland colours (blue)

Also, this link could be usefull, as it describes the provinces of the empire http://www.warhammer-empire.com/content/category/6/19/55/

Probably because it's fairly new as part of yesterday's Black Gobbo #82.  Not a bad issue, very Empire heavy topic-wise but a little weak on content quality.

Sorry for highjacking your thread, Jason, but:

That is a great link, Cheaky. However, I'm confused by the fact that the majority of those painting examples look so flat. The notable exceptions are the Mark Raley paintjobs, which really look good. But what is going on with the rest? I know that these people can paint (they are paid for it, after all) - so is it really the miniatures to blame?

I would very much like to see painting examples of some of our "Golden-Demon-quality"-painters here...

Have some fun with your painting, Jason, and welcome aboard!

Yeah the colours look flat. I think this is part of GWs new tact of not painting every mini to a Golden Demon standard. Look at those faces! I can do better and you can bet that is saying somethin

On another note my Carroburg army has deffected to the Nuln Border Regiment, whatever the hell that is...

The Marc Raley paint jobs are indeed a cut above the rest. The miniatures really 'pop' into non flatness with his approach.
