Fluff question: name of the warhammer world?
« on: January 13, 2004, 06:11:13 PM »
I wondered if anyone knew the name of the planet on which the warhammer game is fought (no, not earth!). I can't find it anywhere, but I'm quite sure it's some where out there.

seriously, its never been mentioned to my knowledge.  Its the Known World as far as I've seen.

kinda like Campaign City for the superhero RPGs. . . .

The world is actually called Warhammer! At least, it was called that in the past - I don't know if that name is still official.

The official name is Old World. Nothing beyond that.

The Old World is only one area of the Warhammer world - specifically the part that is roughly equivalent to Europe. I can see no justification for using it as a name for the entire planet.

Which is completely correct. There also was a Polar Gateway that collapsed on the South Pole.
The combination of the Lizardmen holding of the Power of Chaos with wards and the Daemons being notoriously bad swimmers makes Daemon invasions from the South Pole pretty rare.

Remember, the distance Daemons can go from the Polar Gates is determined by the amount of carnage they cause along the way.
Somehow slaying penguins and torturing fish isn't something the powers of Chaos thrive on......

I second queek, I can't remember the planet's name being mentioned anywhere, too.
But since the Warhammer World's inhabitants will most likely refer to their planet as the only inhabited planet in their universe (just like it was on our world for a long time), why shouldn't they also refer to their planet just as "world" or maybe even "earth"? :?

@ rufus sparkfire: It's true that the world is commonly reffered to as "the Warhammer World" in articles (or posts, like here ^^), but this is just a "technical" term to distinguish it clearly from "our" world. I don't really think it is the name of the planet, given to it by some ofe of its inhabitants... ;)

I second Hagen. "Warhammer" is a name for the "outsiders" (like us  :P ) to use. The inhabitants do not use it. "Old World" is the only name that the inahbitants of the, er... Old World know.

But "The Old World" is still only the term for the lands between the World'S Edge Mountains and the ocean,  between  the Troll Country and the Darklands... ;)
And even the term "OLD World" IMHO implies, that there is also a "new world" known to the creators of this term in analogy. ;)
The whole world' as such is never really named AFAIK.

Yes, it is right, it is never named. Ostensibly, because the inhabitants of the Warhammer World know it by the name of their own location, i.e. Ulthuan, Empire, etc.

Too bad there is no name  :(

I was making some fluff on a deamon prince and he was supposed to come from another world to (insert the name of the warhammer world). Now I'll have to make up the name myself  :?  or try to avoid using the name of the world.

Thanks anyways

Loewenstein is correct. I think you call the whole thing "warhammer world", but I dunno.

Well, it is actually, "earth"

WARNING: 40K ALERT IN HE FOLLOWING WRITING PIECE!!!!! BE WARNED!!!

If you dig deep enough (in the vaults of the adeptus Misistum no doubt) you'll find that Holy terra in the 41st millenia, is the Warhammer-world in Fantasy. Same planet. Same elves, give or take a few letters  . Same chaos and necrons (sort of) Same space marines (cept they are called knight by us, which is Correct) See my link between the two? all of my frineds agree, and there was a post on WPS and here too, i thuink, comparing them.

Long post, i dare you to call it a spam,

not spam, just wrong.

the design team has stated a number of times that the WFB world and the 40K world are not the same, although they certainly explore some of the same themes.

and no, they didn't explain how the Albion items fit into that theory!

Well unless your Daemon Prince took line 5 and really had to get of at the stop called *insert real name of Warhammer world here* why not just have him go towards this nice shiny planet full of life where Chaos already has a foothold?

Otherwise, have him come from the Andromeda Galaxy to the Milky Way on line 46. He'll then have to take the previously mentioned line 5 and get out at the next stop after Mars. But pay attention! Sometimes the roster changes because of holidays and such. Then the next stop after Mars will be Morsslieb and he doesn't want to get of there. So let him get of after Morsslieb but only when Morsslieb turns out to be the next stop after Mars.
He can hardly miss it!

@queek: Nah, you're not old. I'm just geographically misplaced! I'm afraid Bloom County has not been a great hit here in the Netherlands.
Then again, do you know Suske en Wiske (Bob & Bobette)?

@Omnissiah: Morsslieb is one of the 2 moons the Warhammer world posesses, it is generally considered an evil moon.

Albion is, not very surprising, England on the Warhammer map and was hidden for centuries by thick mist. An invasion of evil tried to destroy the Standing Stones (which help as barriers against the expansion of Chaos).
In the end the Dark Elves won (I still personally believe the DE players fixed the campaign by sending in false results by the boatload, how else could that underpowered pre-revision list rake in such win numbers?).
Dark Elves and runners up got a few new magic items to use. Mostly weapons which had the same effect as respectively; A powerfist, a powersword and lightning claws. I believe there was a suit of powerarmourish stuff as well. The Empire got it's bloody uselees 55 pts Hexstaff IIRC. "The Hexstaff! Make sure you leave home without it!!"
However, because of the Studio Campaign the Lizardmen managed to capture the Super Node of power and keep the power of Chaos at bay.

yeah, the HE got the (power) Armour of the Gods.

bet it helped their sales for certain Aspect Warrior models as well.   :P

I was disappointed in the Albion campaign.  Too many special rules to keep track of.  (and it was such a let-down after the superb 3rd Battle for Armaggedon campaign.)

anyways, I'm still hoping for better from SoC.

@BAWTRM:  Bloom County has been out of print for some time.  Hence the age comments.

This be NOT a powerfist, it may look like one, it may feel like one, it may work like one. But it's a... a.... aah well, just let's call it a power fist.
