The full army of Hochland
« on: May 14, 2007, 10:28:09 PM »
This is the current Empire project I'm working on. I've been tooling around a bit with a themed list for Hochland. Inspired by the article in the library here (which then still had suggestions for an army based from that province) and some other background sources I started building a list for this army.

As Hochland is mainly a province of farming and hunting and most of it's territory is covered with forests Hochland has a lot of archers, huntsmen and handgunners. Most famous of all of these are the Jeager Corps, a special unit of Long Rifle armed troops that protect the settlements and hunt the evil creatures in the forests. On the other hand, Hochland is a small province and relatively poor. So there are no hellblasters, hellstroms or other exotic equipment and warmachines in the army.

As for the list, here we go:

Aldebrandt Ludendorf, Elector Count of Hochland (General of the Empire, Warhorse, Barding, Full Plate Armour, Shield, Runefang) 216
Grandmaster of the Knights of the Silver Mountain (Full Plate, Warhorse, Barding, Lance) 145
Battle Standardbearer (AoMI, Sword of Might) 115
Captain (Dragon Bow, Shield, Full Plate Armour, Sword of Battle) 100
Sigmar Warrior Priest (Heavy Armour, Enchanted Shield, Silver Horn) 144
Wizard Lord (Lvl 3, Lore of Life, Crystal Ball, Luck) 235
Battle Wizard (Lvl 2, Lore of Life, 2x Dispel scroll) 150
Battle Wizard (Lvl 2, Lore of Beasts) 100

25 Obliged Halbardiers (Full Command, Warbanner, 6 Handgunners, 10 Militia) 160+48+50
20 Spearmen (Shield, Full Command, 6 Handgunners, 10 Militia) 140+48+50
20 Spearmen (Shield, Full Command, 6 Handgunners, 10 Militia) 140+48+50
20 Spearmen (Shield, Full Command, 6 Archers, 10 Militia) 140+48+50
20 Militia (Sergeant) 108
20 Militia (Sergeant) 108
10 Handgunners (Marksmen, Longrifle) 125
10 Handgunners (Marksmen, Longrifle) 125
10 Handgunners (Marksmen, Rep. Handgun) 120
10 Archers 80
10 Archers 80
10 Jeager Corps (Huntsmen) 100
6 Knights of the Silver Mountain (First Knight, Musician) 162
6 Knights of the Silver Mountain (First Knight, Musician) 162
6 Knights of the White Wolf (Full Command) 178

10 IC of the Silver Mountain (Full Command) 300
20 Greatswords (Full Command, 8 Handgunners, 10 Halbardiers) 230+64+50
2 Great Cannons 200
2 Mortars 150

20 Flagellants (Prophet of Doom) 210
6 Dow Light Cavalry (Huntsmaster on horseback with a cool weapon and a throng of hunting/warhounds with him) 84
6 Dow Light Cavalry (Huntsmaster on horseback with a cool weapon and a throng of hunting/warhounds with him) 84

Did you want comments on this list, or the best way to arrange it, or is this more of a log of you list? I am unsure what we are supposed to contribute to this list...

Do you have all this or is this what you have ambition to collect?

I think it would make an awsome army if you do get it all finished and if you have the space and the time a battle featuring it all would make for a brilliant battle report.

Good luck!

@Warlord: I would love comments on the list. I mean, many people here have a large knowledge about the historical background of the Empire and maybe they have ideas on Hochland themed armies. Any suggestions for extra units I did not include (with reasons why they should included of course, I want my army fluffy)

Besides that I'd love maybe some ideas of you on how to use this army. It's not particulary fire heavy although against some armies it will certainly outshoot them. Basicly it could be almost seen as a 'horde' army. Although it's not my favourite description. My own idea on using this list was a more defensive style (to fit the spearmen + handgunners) and try to let the enemy come. Two 'hard' units (Greatswords and Flagellants) should be able to take on most units for long enough to get them supported by other troops. The IC knights would be joined by Aldebrant and be a main battle unit in the center where all troops can benefit from his Ld while the smaller units of knights and DoW light cavalry would try and gain advanteous positions for charging in flanks or rears or go Warmachine hunting or something like that.

Much further then that idea I haven't come yet. The entire list allowed for quite some flexiblity in a 2000 pts battle but thinking on large scale what kind of tactics would be useful?

@Ratarsed: My 'ambition' for this army is to simply build 'the entire army of Hochland' or something that can pass for that. So including every unit that is likely to hail from Hochland and meanwhile keeping the armylist legal. So that is the reason I included halbardiers (I like spearmen & swordsmen better. But they are fluffy) Swordsmen are too expensive to raise and maintain as they need constant training. As for space, I have a 8*4 table that might just be big enough to field the army and can fill it with scenery etc. I hope to have it finished while the Nemesis Crown campaign runs but this will be hard I think.

Most of the army I do already have. I only need to get myself some DoW light cav (or something I want to have for that eg: Hunter + dogs) some militia and flaggellants and I have everything for this list. The biggest problem will be the time aspect for playing. But with plenty of movement trays this isn't too hard. Only rolling dice is taking up so much time with this size.

Wow, that is a large project.

This might be a great idea. It will allow you field a large number of different kinds of 1000-1250 point armies.

Ok, so going from the full army of Hochland (show above) to a smaller list. I was thinking in GT terms (2200 pts) and come to the following list. However, I'll probably not attend in this tournament so it will be for Fanatic in Zwolle or Leeuwarden (which is in Novermber and gives me plenty of time to paint the last models for this army) I don't have a clue how many points those tournaments are. I thought something like 1500 pts?

Any way, back to topic and to the 2200 pts GT list

Aldebrandt Ludendorf - General of the Empire (Runefang, Fullplate armour, Shield, Barded Warhorse, 216)
Empire Captain (BSB, AoMI, SoM, 115)
Empire Captain (Dragon Bow, FPA, Shield, 85)
Battle Wizard (Lvl1, Jade order, 2x Dispel scroll, 115)

20 Halbardiers (full command, 5 handgunners, 8 free company, 210)
20 Spearmen (full command, shield, 5 handgunners, 8 free company, 220)
10 Handgunners (Marksman, HLR, 105)
10 Handgunners (Marksman, HLR,105)
10 Huntsmen (Jeager Corps, 100)
6 Knights (Lance, First Knight, Musician, 162)
6 Knights (Lance, First Knight, Musician, 162)

20 Greatswords (Full Command, 6 Handgunners, 10 Halbardiers, 328)
2 Cannons (200)
1 Mortar (75)

Total: 2198pts

The idea was for a more defensive army. I have the firepower to force most opponents to come towards me. In total there are 36 handgunners in the army including 2 HLR. Besides that some Jeager Corps to slow down enemy units and see what else they can take on. And some cannons and a mortar to be able to take on more beefy units.

The army will probably be centered around the unit of Greatswords that will be joined by the BSB although I might put him in the unit of Halbardiers or Spearmen depending on the situtation. The units of Halbardiers and Spearmen will be on the flanks of the Greatswords Knights will take on one flank while the Cannons could take another. Supported by some handgunners.

When it comes to rushing to the enemy I will terribly fail. It will be just slogging forward while taking casualties although the huntsmen might screen an important unit. The knights or huntsmen might also be able to take some points on the map with the rest of the troops comming slowly in. However, splitting the army might be dangerous and I'd have to watch this.

What do you think?

i think thats a great idea for the Jaeger corps i am doing the same thing also but just naming one of my handgunner regiments and painting them different and making them "LUCKY" but also if you look on the UK GW site you can actually find optional rules for Alderbrand ludenhof  http://uk.games-workshop.com/empire/characters/5/ hope that tickles your fancy  :biggriin:

Yeah, I started my life in the beginning of the 5th edition and still have the book here. His adjusted rules are nice and fluffy, but they wouldn't allow me in tournaments :(
