I know quite a lot of people use them.

There are some manufacturers that cater to this.
Hovels come to mind.
Gripping beast have some, though I don't know if they do cattle.
Pegasus hobbies do some suitable plastics

You also may want to look into model train companies, the scale HO I believe is about the same as Warhammer scale. They make everything from villages to cities to farms ect for train sets.

Not HO, that is way to small. The more or less correct scales are S or O (though this will vary a bit between US and Europe).

I don't know where you are located, but I've seen/purchaced farm animal sets that work size wise from craft stores, dollar stores, and  toy stores.    Stores like CVS, Michaels, and even Toys R Us. Typically a bag of assorted figures costs less than $5

Michaels and HobbyTown USA are where I have seen models that would work, although many are going to be too large.  Using these would be much cheaper as well.

Wargames Foundry's cattle are quite nice, imho:

Far better than Gripping Beast's rather apalling looking highland cattle:

Mega Minis has tons of farm animals available, but I find them inconsistently sized. Their 28mm Racoons are more the  size of dogs, and their 28mm bears are the size of large dogs. A little odd, but the prices are great if the animal you want is correctly sized"

Vendel's line of animals is still available; Molon Labe bought the moulds. They had a few different cattle packs iirc:

If you want dead cows, go to BAM:

I think there are some others I'm forgetting... I'll check when I'm back home and not on the inlaws' terrible internet connection out in the styx. ;)

I believe all/most of these are Gripping Beast livestock:

The pigs, sheep, goats and geese are on 20x20 bases, the cows in the background are on 25x50 bases.

Black Cat Bases do pigs and chickens, and all sorts of other miscellaneous stuff but it is not the easiest site to find your way around.

Vendel have been mentioned already - not sure where you are, but as also mentioned the moulds are in North America now I believe. They did livestock for their Border Reivers range and raiding scenarios.

another friend of mine also suggested this cow

I'm making a tyrolean  (austrian alpine) themed regiment [ i like history more than some of the warhammer fluff.] and thought it would add some character to the unit if i added some farm animals into the mix. I'll post it when i have it all finished

Mega Miniatures: Has a ton of random animals in Pewter.

I own these.

Pegasus Hobbies 1/72 farm animals... they lie. The scale is at a halfway point for 1/72 and 28mm. They work fine for hobby gaming.

Vendel has been renamed "Molon Labe" by the new owner:
