Maneater for empire DOW pics
« on: January 31, 2005, 05:19:10 PM »
Hey all,

Here's a pic of my new maneater which i'll be using occasionally as a DOW choice in my empire army. This is the first thing I've painted in about 8 months so I was a bit rusty, I'd consider him to be about table-top standard?
I've tried to use colours strongly assosiated with the empire so he's got some stripes and stuff to make him fit in. I'm not really sure whether Gen H will want this on here or in the counts tavern?

Anyway, here's the links to the pics, let me know what you think of him!

Got to love your 'tabletop standard'.

It's far beyond what most people put onto the table under that name!!

Table top standard?????

I guess my models aren't suitable for the table top then...

Looks fine! And nicely painted minis are quite welcome in the Elector's Forum until we get a proper hobby forum running ;)

The weapons are pretty rusty looking, especially the ironfist and trigger guard on the right hand pistol.

I'm not entirely happy with the skin or leather areas but it's been a bit of a learning curve as I've been experimenting with colours I've never used before. I think I need some better detail brushes though as its pretty tricky painting fine details with a brush that has a tip like a fish tail! Curse those GW brushes!

Cheers for the kind comments guys, hopefully I'll have some more to show soon!

Cheers,

Dante

Any ideas where I'd be able to pick them up? Art store maybe? Most model shops around these parts tend to sell brushes of a similar standard to GW ones or overprice massively for good ones!

Do you know any sources on various brush types as applied to figure painting? I've been looking far and wide and can't find anything.

<ACK!> I am with the others. I guess my models aren't fit for the table top either.

By the way, I love the man-eaters stats, but giving up both rares!!! I don't know if I can do that.

Windsor&Newton are the top of the line brushes.

You can also get other Kolinsky sable brushes that are of high quality from Escoda, among others.

Check out an art supply store, and be sure to test the brush before purchase for splitting, fish-hooking, and proper point.

Find yourself a Winsor & newton Serie 7 brush

By far the best brushes I've ever used, really wonderfull to use. I know they are expensive, but they last so much longer. I tried out a GW brush not long ago (after being used to W&N for a very long time), it took around five days before it was hopeless to paint with it, a W&N serie 7 last around 8 months for me.

You should be able to find them in most art stores, but make sure to check out the brush in question first, and that's also why you should never buy a brush over the net. It might have a slightly spoiled tip

I'm not exactly sure - I have one GW Detail Brush that's held up pretty well, but I chucked several others out the window after they became useless well before I expected. Don't know if it's inferior materials or assembly, but they just seem to crap out on me too often.

I used to use Bruynzeel brushes but the only art store here that carried them stopped doing so. My current favorite are Revell's Painta Luxus series, with the triangular handle. I find the bulkier handle gives the brush a nice sense of balance - plus it's German craftsmanship so you know it will be good :)

First of, nice Maneater.

Second, it's interesting to see what habits do to you. I've been used to brushes that are far worse than GW in quality for a good while now. When I picked up a GW brush, it held longer than the others, and worked beter for most tasks. So, even if I understand that they are bad quality compared to other equipment, they're still good in my eyes. And my painting standards range at the top of my gaming circle at least....

Personally I look at it this way, I spend around $1000 on the hobby per year, if not closer to $1500 and something like 10 hours per week in average on painting.

Not using the $10 extra it cost to get the best tools is seems silly to me

Nice painting...!   :-D

Got to say I like the skin.  It looks more natural, and less "cartooney" oif that makes sence to you.

Can't say I have used the Windsow & Newton brushes, but the world and their wife keeps telling me how fantastic they are and having see the quality of the work from those who use them, they do get good results.

I use the cheeper German made "Premier" P33 sable brushes.  They hold a point for quite a while, but extensive painting will wear them out.

Maybe I'll have to do something with this damned undercoated ogre I have here (one of the old Imperial ones)

Have a good one,
Andy
