So I think I had a roach in my flat. I threw it out, so I'm not entirely sure whether it was one, but still, wtf? I take so much care in keeping the place clean. No leftover food standing around, all appliances get cleaned regularly with the full range of chemicals available. No carpet anywhere, and I vacuum frequently. Admittedly, there are large stacks of paper on the floor, but that can't be a reason, can it?

Most annoying.

When I lived in New York (upstate, not the city) it was very rare to even see a roach. The only way you got roaches was if you were a very dirty person in a very dirty house.

When I moved to the south I learned that it's a different situation. They just come in uninvited. Huge beasts, even when you keep your house spotless. Unless you spray around your house inside and out on a monthly basis, you will have at least one giant roach wander in every once in a while.

We had a mouse for a while before I finally killed it. I couldn't figure out what it was eating, because it couldn't get into the pantry, and we didn't leave any food out. When I finally found his nest (under a lone bookcase) it was full of kibble stolen from our dog's bowl. The dog ate all of his food as soon as it was put in there, so I guess he was a very brave and stealthy mouse.

Just goes to show that even the neatest homes (my wife is a bit of a clean freak) can be the abode of creepy crawlies.

Thanks for the moral support.

I'm a bit perplexed, frankly. It looked like one, except that it was far too big. German roaches (don't blame me, that's the actual name) get up to 1.6 cm, I've learned. And it did not look like an American one, which get bigger apparently. That critter was about 4cm. I examined it diligently before throwing it out, but I'm no expert.

Oh well, no way around it but to turn the entire flat upside down and vacuum everything. And worst of all, get those stacks of paper sorted. As if I had nothing else do to.

I would very much prefer a mouse. I like mice. Or a rat, I like rats, too. Do rats eat roaches? I know that tarantulas do, but I'm not having one of those in my place. Same goes for wasps and hornets. Perhaps I should buy a rat and house-train it.

So if a Swede says "I have a mouse in my house", he may actually mean a beaver?

I guess if I found out that I had a beaver in my house, I'd say "dam it!" and move out.
