Welcome Michigan - lovely to have a lady with such a good sense of humour on board.

Despite the 'nick' you therefore have to be english.   :engel:

Should we refer to you as "The Lady of the Lake" or would that be ruining it.

Welcome to the forums Michigan, I laughed, and though I started later than you (Even though I'm a bit older) I went through much of what you talk about, both with the RP systems and Warhammer. Kudoes, and hope to see more posts.

Okay... aparently I have utterly failed at sarcasm. So I have to state this is plan language: Warhammer is fine. The Empire is fine. The world has not ended.

no your point was well made, some people just like to be difficult  :biggriin:

If anything it was ruined forever earlier than the 2nd vol of first edition. I was excited when I was reading page one of vol 1 back in 1983, then I turned the page and Warhammer was ruined forever.

Are you sure ?

I still have 108 painted Squat infantry, plus support vehicles, in storage... awaiting their return to the WH40K game. That will be the sign of the End Times.

I finally got rid of my Squats.  :icon_sad:

In all seriousness*, let me share a bit of background... I am not as old as some of the members of this forum, and I'm not as young as most of them. But I was younger than most when I got my start in the roleplaying hobby, at the wee age of seven, back in 1988** I was introduced to an odd little game called Dungeons & Dragons. No, not AD&D (that came latter), I had an instant fascination for the hobby - these were the King Arthur stories I loved to read, the incredible tales out ofLord of the Kings my mother had read me to sleep with in kindergarten, the He-Man and She-Ra adventures I loved to see on TV every Saturday... but I got to be the hero(ine). I was the youngest player in the group by a good six years, most of the guys were in their late teens (our original DM was our new 20-something parish priest! :engel:)

In the midsummmer 1990, I was nine years old and a seasoned veteran of D&D... Heck, I was even running my own dungeons! Then my freinds and I discovered Warhammer, then in its third edition.  Warhammer hit its fourth edition not to long after we'd all sort of settled into our choice of armies. I'd already survived two edition wars over D&D by this point (some of the blokes in the original group were still bitter about Chainmaile having become the original edition of D&D), I'd survived a split between Shadowrun and Cyberpunk, and even managed to weather the storm of being "A. Girl. In. A. Game. Store."

There have been five revisions of 40K since I started, five revisions of WHFB since I started, four or five revisions of damn near every RPG ever since I started... and something like 10 or 12 revisions of D&D since I started; There have been so many Secret Inifinte Crisis Invasions of Infinte Zero Wars in my favorite comic book publishers that I go cross-eyed thinking about it... and the Console Wars. Oh god, the console wars...

(Fourty-five minute pause while I deal with my PTSD from the Great Genesis/SNES War.)

I mean, don't let me get in the way of your holy wars... But I've lived through so many things being "RUINED FOREVER!" over the years, that I have become a bit jaded. To judge by the reactions of this games more vocal fans every product ever released is the death knell of the game, the hobby, and Western civilization. Seriously, GW could put a £50 note in every $14.99 blister pack, and the forums wudl erupt with hatred that they weren't giving away Euros, and that [insert any random GW staffer here]*** was trying to devalue the pound.

Hahahaha!  Great post Michigan.  I can't believe you even reference the "Chain Mail" rules in your later post!  Ha!  I still have a copy of that sitting on my shelf.
That is an oldy but a goody.

Although it may be out-of-turn for me to contradict his Holiness Pope Darknight I, I must speak up for brother Gnu and say he is neither impolite or creepy . . . well, certainly not impolite . . . I've never met him face-to-face, so he may indeed give off a very creepy vibe, but strictly judging by his posts, he seems to be a stand-up gentlemen. And, yeah, let's face it, how often do we get a girl on these forums? It's kinda like when one walks into a comic book store and all the nerds attempt to summon the courage to be the first one to speak to her.

To the OP, if you are indeed from Michigan, I'm not buying you a steak . . . that goes to college-boy . . .

And, yes, I get your post . . . well played, young lady. :smile2:
So, what would you guys do if some dude came at you with a belt that way?
Make sure I've got the safeword memorised.

You know I always wonder how we get to the hyperbole of ruined so quickly....

I think of myself as an old grumbler about stuff and am not a real big fan of the 8th Edition Empire book or the 8th edition in general. I am however not going to argue Warhammer is forever ruined more I look at it in a similar line as being a Mets fan. Just because at times they field a shit team doesn't mean I stop being a fan...

A question I would raise; if she's from Michigan and is in her early 30s and was playing D&D with a parish priest 25 years or so ago . . . who was the priest? I probably know him :)

welcome lady of the lake. well better to refer to her like that rather than lady in the lake.

"and even managed to weather the storm of being "A. Girl. In. A. Game. Store." so you will more than survive here on a forum.

and for my self i don't care about the ruined effect. i mourn homwever  the lost one "man o war"  for example and the unsuported game specialits. i was so fond of necromunda  and my escher gang  or  my marienburg mercenaries of mordheim.

and for the squat  keeping  them for so long give you my automatics respect.  maybe more a lady lore keeper  rather a "of the lake"?

if you attack the empire the empire strikes back

Awesome post! And many of the comments after it just proves its point nicely. What is even more fun was that I realized the original intentions, despite having Aspergers syndrome and a tendensy to take everything litterary. But now all them normals aroundhere was "Yeah, it is true! Damn, GW was evil from the start etc".

Had I not gotten a seriously sprained ankle yesterday I might have jumped with laughter. Also, it is time to dig your head out of the sand, Uryen, and realize your views about as subjective as everyone elses. No need for stating it with certainty. How about saying:
Well, personally I think 3rd ed was the best, or rather fits my style of play better, but that is only my opinion.

There have always been fans wailing and rambling towards exactly everything G have done. Almost as soon as they left the non-profit approach people wail because they wanna make money. Making the game somehow...inpure. But it is the money earned that allowed Warhammer to develop from something played in secluded rooms by seccret nerd group who wanted a high treshhold because it made their intellectual investment feel better, more elite or shall I say Leet! Unless you was not nery enough you did not belong... Etc
Oh, and remember GW made it personal, not you!

Gosh, some1 says that he/she is a girl and all of you auto-agree with him/her?

1. If considered as criticism of current players who cry about quite good 8ed Empire, poking eyes of blind people does not make you savior

2. If post is serious, it's pathetic.

Respect for aged Empire player, but i play empire since 5th edition, and i find it better and better every ED. Yes, they nerf something over editions, but overall picture is unique: We can do what others cannot. Field entire shooting army, entire knighly army, entire WARMACHINES army if we like. And now in 8ed, we can field entire Chariots Army :D

So, Empire rules(Thus, negating your premise that world have ended...repeatedly)

Now, Markov. More hyperbole? As far as I can tell a fair number of people did not agree and sort of got insulted when they realized she was sarcastic. I agree with Michigan because she just hit the nail on the head. Funny thing some folk will probably say:
Yes, most of the sarcasm is on the spot, but my particular complain , unlike the others, IS valid! See the pattern? It boils down to the fact that you cannot please everyone. Not even Jesus could. Hence, what people need to do is to be more calm an see the bigger picture. Realize that this time someone else got really happy and that is a good thing too. Instead people want the game sort of to remain as they want it, and a sad truth is that most people want to believe that they and their mates must represent a majority of gamers etc. Good old tribalism at work. My way is so good that others are stupid for not realizing that it is the truth or the best way. In the end, most things broils down to opinions, but of course, modern mans focus on his or her ego makes for a very narrow view on things.
Even idf the community as a whole finds things good, it is not enough for them because they are right after all!

There's a very fine line between sarcasm and polemics. Don't get me wrong, the latter can be just as funny but at the end of the day it remains an exaggeration based on nothing.

If it boils down to the fact that you cannot please everyone than why make such a fuss about the odd player not being content about mortars or Robohorses? I'm sure some here where not pleased when Pistoliers lost their fusillade back in the day. If you must call that cries of the end of the world though...it's just a different plane of reality I suppose.

It's a bit like the media. Some backwater politician thinks things could have gone better, and the next thing you know the party is portrayed as being up in arms about project x or y. Of course they're hitting the nail on the head - that's inevitable when you hit the wall with an 8,000 kg wrecking ball.

I couldn't quite follow your philosophical digression on modern man sadly.
