Okay... aparently I have utterly failed at sarcasm. So I have to state this is plan language: Warhammer is fine. The Empire is fine. The world has not ended.

Well, I thought it was funny, and therefore it was clearly, objectively and quantifiably funny. Anyone who says otherwise is demonstrably wrong. As wrong as people who say that 8th ed is better than 6th ed ;)

If anything it was ruined forever earlier than the 2nd vol of first edition. I was excited when I was reading page one of vol 1 back in 1983, then I turned the page and Warhammer was ruined forever.

Changed my mind. I have just re-read the first page of Vol 1 of Ed 1 WFB, and the first paragraph is good. Then in the second paragraph, Warhammer was ruined forever.

You've must have never destroyed an entire Vampire army, only to have the strigoi proceed to destroy yours... I still to this day hate vamps... Though I do miss hordes of chaos, now that was a fluffy book!

Gosh, some1 says that he/she is a girl and all of you auto-agree with him/her?

I really, really don't want to get sucked into the trap of arguing on the internet... but as MarkoV seems to keep bringing this back to me instead of my post... Well, I feel the need to respond. To begin with, I am in fact a female-type woman person and from Michigan. Which of those two makes me a bigger oddity, I will leave as an exercise to the reader.

Quote from: MarkoV
1. If considered as criticism of current players who cry about quite good 8ed Empire, poking eyes of blind people does not make you savior

It is a criticism, intended as tounge-in-cheek, not only of current players but of a general trend in all manner of geeky hobbies. The original form is drawn from an entry on TFWiki.net listing all of the ways in which the Transformers franchise was "ruined forever." If it wasn't funny, that's my fault as a writer. But enough people here seem to be chuckling, so maybe its just a question of taste?

Quote from: MarkoV
2. If post is serious, it's pathetic.

It wasn't intended to be serious. If you honestly beleive that I felt the second book in the three book boxed set of first edition WHFB ruined the game forever... well... that's not the fault of my writing skill, that's the fault of whoever taught you the basics of literary analysis.

Quote from: MarkoV
Respect for aged Empire player, but i play empire since 5th edition, and i find it better and better every ED. Yes, they nerf something over editions, but overall picture is unique: We can do what others cannot. Field entire shooting army, entire knighly army, entire WARMACHINES army if we like. And now in 8ed, we can field entire Chariots Army :D

Actually, apart from a few games with the bits from the WHFB 6th Edition starter box, I've never played the Empire before. I started collecting my army about three months ago and was pleasantly surprised to get a new book so suddenly. I played WHFB quite a bit in 4th & 5th Editions (Bretonnia), stopped sometime during 6th (all my freinds were interested in other games), and didn't start again until 8th (Old book TK, then Dark Elves)...

I think I'm getting closer to the truth, here. Just re-read the first paragraph of Vol 1 of first edition Warhammer and the first sentence was good, but then when you read the second sentence, Warhammer is ruined forever.

Arguing on the internet is an act of cultural progress. Much better than swinging one's fists at someone else's nose or its general vicinity.

With all due respect, but your basic premise is kind of self-evident. If it is of such great import, you can easily count the numbers of positive and negative remarks pre- and post-release. Empire's not ruined, water's wet.

I have a Pirate themed Empire army so yeah, that's true. Or maybe I'm missing the point of this thread?

Otherwise you would have ended:

Quote
It finally dawned on me: the first letter of the first word of the sentence of first paragraph of Vol 1 of first edition Warhammer was really really good, but the second one ruined Warhammer forever.

Or perhaps:

The cover was good, but then, when I opened the book....

Walking into the shop where they sold the book, I remember distinctly (even though it was 1983 and I was 15), was good. Then someone said "Have you seen this book?" and Warhammer was ruined forever.

I think there needs to be law, along the lines of Godwin's Law, about posting that XKCD comic. I mean, it's classic and everything, but how can I go and argue with conservatives in the back table at 2.30am when somebody's just posted that...?

Plenty of humor there for someone that can see it, you however seem intent on turning this into something personal. If you don't find it humorous that's fine, but leave your insults at the door, you can pick them up on the way out.

Ahh. These youngsters! :closed-eyes:
Let me tell you the real story, son.

I was 19 at the time.
I was playing D&D (yes, the original one, before AD&D, AD&D2...).
At that time, roleplayers were collecting many lovely models from many different manufacturers. We would play a couple of models at a time, and get only the model corrisponding to the characters we were roleplaying: a ranger, a dwarf warrior, a gnome illusionist, a half-orc clerk-thief...
Only Dunjeon Masters would own more than half a dozen of similar minis. Myself, occasional DM, I had around 15 skellies who were acting as whatever troops they were facing - and a couple of dragons.

Then I recall spotting a promising new roleplaying game: Warhammer.
That was in a sort of fantasy medieval Europe. It seemed to be a fairly decent game.

But, probably for the sake of selling more models, they turned Warhammer into a wargame.
And... it was ruined forever.

Well, see, once upon a time there was wonderful a medieval miniatures wargame, by name of Chainmail. Not nearly as complex as some of the other historical war games on the market, but not as dumbed down simplitisc as some others.  Then Gary Gygax went and ruined it forever with a supplement that added rules for jousting, man-to-man melee, and conducting battles with fantasy creatures... and then a few years later, Gygax and Arneson went and ruined things even more by turning it into Dungeons & Dragons.

And yes, I do know people still bitter about this...

I had not realized that Chainmail pre-dated D&D.  Maybe I'm not as big a nerd as I thought I was!
No wait....I'm still playing games with miniatures of imaginary creatures.   :icon_rolleyes:

I somehow feel this thread has now run its course and is about to be ruined forever.

If that's true, and I have no reason to doubt you, does that mean by posting this post I have indeed ruined it forever?

NB: On a side note, not quite as silly, I still very much want to 're-enact' a 1st ed game and do a report. I will get around to it one day.
